No matter what type of diabetes we have, none of us want to be part of this “club”.  This is a frightening disease because it’s so unpredictable.  What will it attack next?  According to a recent study published online in JAMA, nearly 50% of adults living in the U.S. have diabetes or pre-diabetes, a condition where a person already has elevated blood sugar and is at risk to develop diabetes.

I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in 1994 and have so far managed alright.  My hemoglobin A1c is not at goal yet, but I’m working on it.  Diabetics can only manage symptoms now.  There is no cure for diabetes type 1, and if people like me with type 2 can lose weight, it’s possible to maintain a healthy blood sugar – but a type 2 diabetic will always be a type 2 diabetic regardless.

I asked the folks in my group, A Second Helping of Wellness… with a Dash of Humor & a Pinch of Faith, if they had anything in particular to add to my post today.  Here’s the one response I received:

I think every day should be Diabetes Awareness Day. It is a work in progress for many of us. You have it on your mind all the time, and if you ignore it, it can cause so many complications.  – John Manganiello

Some of us express our thoughts and feelings through the designs we make.  I guess I’m in that category.  Here are a few I’ve come up with that say what I need to say:

It hurts to be judged – especially when it is something as intensely personal as your body and your weight where your health is concerned.  I had a chiropractor ask me in a very flip and off-hand manner, “Why don’t you just lose the weight and get rid of the diabetes?”  I never went back to him.  I wonder why???

Judging doesn’t help!  People think they can shame a type 2 into compliance and obedience.  It works the opposite way for me.  I’ll speak for myself – but if someone belittles me all the time – nags me about my eating habits and crushes my spirit – I’m going to eat more.  No, I can’t explain it – but it’s true.  I suppose I just think “Well, I can’t do anything right, so why try?” 

Now…  encourage me and I’ll go the distance and I will reach a goal.  It doesn’t have to be much of a compliment – just a little one will set me in motion heading in a positive direction!  It’s how I’m wired – how God made me!  If I do good and I’m told it’s good – I’ll keep it up! 

I’m thankful for the support I get online and on facebook in the diabetic community.  They seem to understand and that really helps when I feel like I’m the only one struggling.  🙂

11-14 I'M SO THANKFUL TODAY

I have to chuckle at the word AWARENESS sometimes, especially when it comes to diabetes.  If you have diabetes or you live with someone who has diabetes, trust me, you are painfully aware – on so many levels!

The idea is to make those who do not live with diabetes aware of not only the challenges of living a life with diabetes, but also the way we can overcome those challenges with positive thinking, a good support system and of course – insulin!

What am I thankful for today as I live another day with type 2 diabetes?  It’s a long list, so fasten your seatbelt and hang on …

1.  I can see clearly!  Since my diagnosis in 1994, I’ve faithfully seen my eye care specialist once a year.  People without diabetes see their eye doctor every other year.  I say this with all humility, a lump in my throat and tears in my eyes – every year when my eyes are dilated and I am checked for retinopathy (a common condition with diabetes), my doctor gives me a glowing report!   He says, “If I didn’t know you were diabetic, I would not be able to tell from these pictures.” 

2.  I hear ya!  It’s recently been proven that diabetes can cause hearing loss.  They think that the small vessels of the ear get plugged up because of excess glucose in the blood.  If I could not hear it would not be the end of my life, but I am a musician and have been blessed with perfect pitch.  I’m not bragging, just telling the truth.  Hearing loss would be a huge loss to be sure.

3.  I’m walking on sunshine!  I admit there are days when I need a cane to walk better because of neuropathy (another complication of diabetes), but I am on my feet and moving.  What a wonderful blessing to still be mobile and able to take a walk anytime I want to.  It’s so important that I stay as independent as possible.  I do not take my freedom for granted.  I thank God for the ability to exercise without much pain.  Through the years I have relied on a good Chiropractor and an occasional massage to keep me going.  Exercise is a key component in diabetes management.

4.  I smile every day!  Keeping blood sugar within a healthy range is so important because everything is affected – even my smile!  If my gums are not healthy it could lead to tooth loss.  Along with brushing and flossing I use Sesame Oil to “pull” bacteria from my teeth and gums every day.  Just one Tablespoon of oil once a day really helps my gums stay healthy.  Swish for about 5 minutes and spit – (never swallow the oil), then rinse with water and smile!

5.  I keep stress at bay!  I’m the first to admit that this was not easy a few years ago.  Now that I’m retired it is so much easier to manage the stress in my life.  God has helped me to re-evaluate priorities and re-examine the things that cause stress to begin with.  Sometimes stress just happens, like when there is a health crisis in my family – but these days I really don’t sweat the small stuff.  The older I get, the less most things really matter.

Thank You, Lord, for saving my soul.  Thank You, Lord, for making me whole.  Thank You, Lord, for giving to me Thy great Salvation so rich (full) and free!  I do count my blessings and these are just a few of them.  Yes, I have diabetes, but diabetes does NOT have me!  D stands for dedication to living a healthy lifestyle because God has blessed me so much!  ❤

PRAYER FOR WORLD DIABETES DAY

I received the sweetest message on facebook today from a friend. She said, “I wish you a pain-free ‘D’ day!” I cried. The day has been very good and I’m not in a lot of pain. The sentiment goes out to all of you. I hope you have a pain-free ‘D’ day!

Over 20 years ago I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Of course they tell us to lose weight. If anyone lived in my body they would realize that is so much easier said than done! I take it day by day and that’s all I can do.

The complications I have are not severe, but they are painful. Both of my feet are numb and I have to wear shoes all the time. I have neuropathy in one leg. I also have frequent infections, so cranberry juice has become my silent partner – diet or low-sugar, of course. Lately I have not had to use my cane to walk but I have it handy just in case.

My gums are doing better. I was close to facing tooth loss due to gingivitis. Diabetes affects everything!

My diet is strict, but it has paid off. I do not have retinopathy. My eye doctor always comments that if he didn’t know I had diabetes, he would not be able to tell by looking at photos of my retinas. I’m always so happy to hear that. I thank God for taking such good care of me!
