VALENTINE’S DAY

tl-2-14-valentines-day-2So many folks are lonely on Valentine’s Day.  Today’s post will be less about the romantic side and much more about the reality that – YES – GOD LOVES YOU!77-flavors

to-be-a-bridewithout-his-loveI hope the poetry today from Lucinda Berry Hill has been a great reminder that God really does love you.  He gives us the best gifts possible as we live our lives for Him.  God gives us friends, family and other people to love and care for.

God understands our prayers when they don’t make sense.  When all we can do is cry and mutter and sputter…  God gets that because He sees our heart and knows our intentions.  Why?  Because He loves us so much.

As God loves us, we are to love one another.  Husbands and wives pray for one another and protect one another.  Real love cannot exist apart from God – He’s in the center of every good relationship.

God not only sends special angels into our lives, but sometimes He even sends them back again if we forget to take notes the first time!  – Quoted in The Angels’ Little Instruction Book by Eileen Elias Freeman, 1994

Special angels???  Well…  sure – why not?  Billy Graham calls angels, “God’s secret agents” and we all need as much help as we can get, don’t we?  And yes, we should take notes the first time – but often we don’t, so they have to come back again.

God loves us, but sadly we don’t recognize some of the ways He shows His love toward us.  When was the last time you were driving and had a close call – nearly had a crash – but at the last second you stomped on the brake and everything turned out okay?  Did you thank God for that mercy, or did you congratulate yourself and pat yourself on the back for having such stellar ability behind the wheel?

When was the last time you were awakened by the song of a bird outside your window and thanked God that it was that instead of the blare of a train or a siren of some sort?  These little blessings often go completely unnoticed and God gets no credit or praise or even recognition for His attempt to show His love toward us.

Every blessing we receive regardless of the size is God’s way of showing His love toward us.  If we fail to show gratitude for the little things, surely we should not overlook the reason we are saved…  the sacrifice of Christ Jesus, God’s Son – on our behalf.  It’s only because of His death, burial and resurrection that we are able to make Heaven our home when this life is finished.  God has surely shown His marvelous love to us in big and small ways.  Happy Valentine’s Day. 🙂

VALENTINE’S DAY

TL 2-14 VALENTINE'S DAY

THE INVITATION

I’m not an expert on the subject of man catching, but there is something to be said for tempting him with something warm from the oven.  Last Valentine’s Day I read an article in Ladies’ Home Journal about Amy Westerman, who made MAN-CATCHER BROWNIES for her boyfriend – now husband, Drew.  In fact, the article warns – “Don’t give ’em to anyone who won’t treat you right for the rest of your life.”  These brownies are just one weapon in the “get a man” arsenal, but they are apparently fool-proof!

Wanna write a poem to go with them?  Here’s how to do it.

MAN-CATCHER BROWNIES

Makes 16 Brownies

Ingredients:

30 Kraft caramels, unwrapped

2/3 c. evaporated milk

1 (15.25 oz.) German chocolate cake mix

1/2 c. unsalted butter, melted

3/4 c. semi-sweet chocolate chips

1/2 c. chopped pecans or walnuts

Directions:

Heat oven to 350 degrees F and line the bottom of a 9 x 13 inch baking pan with parchment paper.  Melt caramels with 1/3 c. of the evaporated milk in a small saucepan, stirring mixture occasionally; set sauce aside.

Stir together cake mix, melted butter and remaining 1/3 c. evaporated milk to form a dough.  Press 1 1/3 c. of the dough into the pan in an even layer.  Bake until puffed but not cooked through, about 7 min.  Remove from oven and pour caramel sauce evenly over the top.  Sprinkle chocolate chips over caramel in an even layer.

Top with remaining dough, crumbled into bits and scattered.  Sprinkle with chopped nuts and return to the oven.  Bake until brownies are puffy and set, 10-11 min. more.  Cool completely and cut into squares.

Of course we know it’s important to pray for the right man to walk into your life, but could it hurt to greet the one you really want with a pan of warm brownies?  Well – I don’t think so!

If you’ve already got your mate for life, why not spoil him today with these brownies?  Most of us are working around health issues, but there’s no reason you can’t treat him one day out of the year.  Make Valentine’s Day warm, gooey and very special.   Happy Valentine’s Day!

A COMMENTARY FROM THE HEART

TL A COMMENTARY FROM THE HEART (13)

(2) HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY FROM THE STEEPLE

Next Friday is Valentine’s Day. The church steeple wants us to know that whatever our marital status may be, all are welcome inside the church building.

As the 13th Chapter of 1 Corinthians tells us:

13 If I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but do not have love, I have become a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 If I have the gift of prophecy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge; and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. 3 And if I give all my possessions to feed the poor, and if I surrender my body to be burned, but do not have love, it profits me nothing.

4 Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant, 5 does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered, 6 does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; 7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

8 Love never fails; but if there are gifts of prophecy, they will be done away; if there are tongues, they will cease; if there is knowledge, it will be done away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part; 10 but when the perfect comes, the partial will be done away. 11 When I was a child, I used to speak like a child, think like a child, reason like a child; when I became a man, I did away with childish things. 12 For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face; now I know in part, but then I will know fully just as I also have been fully known. 13 But now faith, hope, love, abide these three; but the greatest of these is love.

Know that you are not alone. If the Valentine’s Day decorations in the stores make you feel alone, find solace and friendship at your local church. God bless you!
