ROLL, FOLD OR FILE

WE'VE PACKED OUR DUDS... LET'S GO!

When you pack a suitcase, do you roll or fold?  Rolling causes more wrinkling but takes up less space.

Folding does not cause wrinkling but takes up more space.

16291949977_ee9891f8c7_qLet me introduce you to a third method that does not wrinkle and takes up less space – I call it filing.

IMG_1322It’s fold – and flip!  It’s not purty, but you can fit a bunch of stuff in there!  I know it looks like this would be a wrinkled mess – but trust me, it really isn’t.  Think of it this way – if you put the luggage in the vehicle handle-side up, then the clothing is basically folded and stacked – facing the way it would in a drawer – right?  See what I’m sayin’?  I have room to fit two pairs of shoes there in the upper R.H. corner of the bag.  I put the shoes there so the WEIGHT of the shoes won’t smush the clothes.  So I can fit ten days worth of clothes plus two pairs of shoes in one suitcase.

Everyone has a certain item that goes with them on vacation. For me, it’s my pillow!  Most pillows in hotel or motel rooms leave me with a sore neck and cranky disposition – just what you want while you’re trying to have a good time, right?  I tote my pillow in its carrying case, so that’s probably the only item that is a total no-brainer.  Everything else is trial and error.  There are two of us trying to use two bags for a ten-day trip.  It’s insane, but we worked it out.

The trick is to convince your suitcase that it can hold more than it thinks it can.  Bring out the best in it.  It has so much potential…  talk nicely to it.  Suitcases have feelings too, ya know.  Whoa…  I think I need a vacation.angry-suitcase-doe-eyed-suitcase

Do you usually fold your clothes and stack them like you would in a drawer?  Most of us do that – and that’s great if you’re going on a short trip or if you’re packing one person’s stuff.  We packed ten changes of clothes each – in two suitcases – yep.

If you fold the clothes but put them in the case as though the clothes were “files” and your suitcase was the “file cabinet” – you can get 22 items packed without smashing it too badly.  We never wear anything that is very high maintenance – in other words, we wear a lot of cotton / poly instead of 100% cotton.  That bit of poly can make a big difference in the wrinkle factor.  Most hotels have hangers and drawers, so if you are overly concerned about wrinkles, you can take things from the suitcase and hang them up or put them in the drawers.  Then hope you don’t forget anything when you leave.  :-/

When all the clothes are packed in the largest suitcases and our toiletries go in the smallest case – we just have those three and my pillow bag to mess with.  We rarely fly, but I would think that would be the way to go if you are flying.  We just don’t like to carry a lot of luggage around – and the file drawer way of packing works best for us.  🙂

NATIONAL THRIFT SHOP DAY

TL 8-17 NATIONAL THRIFT SHOP DAY

Today is NATIONAL THRIFT SHOP DAY!!!  A thrift shop (also known as a thrift store, charity shop, hospice shop or resale shop) is a retail establishment run by a charitable organization to raise money to be used in accord with the organization’s stated charitable purpose.

A great cup of coffee begins with a great cup

Here in Wichita, we have quite a few thrift shops and I definitely have a few favorites.  About a month ago we lost our large Salvation Army Thrift Store, which made me sad.  They used to have a really great deal on Thursdays.  You could get a bag full of clothes (and I packed mine tight) for $5.

Polka dots are timeless fashion

If you have kids going back to school, check your local thrift stores today for special deals.  Yes, there are some old styles on the racks, but if you are handy with a needle and thread, you can update those clothes to update and customize them.  Follow this hashtag for great bargains!  #ThriftShopDay

I’m ready for a night out

I like vintage clothing!  There are some cute outfits and unexpected finds in thrift stores.  They don’t always have women’s petite sizes, but once in a while I find just the right size and style.

Nice coats – I see a few yellow ones

I’m starting to see some of the old styles coming back.  I’ve seen young girls in jumpers like we used to wear in the 1980’s.  I think they are so cute!  Every girl and woman needs to have one little black dress.  Where did I get mine?  Three guesses…  lol.

Pretty and flattering with a splash of green

Most thrift stores have more than clothing these days.  Ours have furniture, home décor items, accessories, shoes and even used books.  Now you can own a book for a reasonable price instead of checking it out of the library.

It’s fun to shop at the thrift shop because you see items that bring back memories.  You may find some rare antiques – and pay a lot less for them!

I call this a boat motor

I still have my boat motor and use it once in a while.  There are so many great finds hiding in the corners, like this:

I appreciate handmade items and have to talk myself out of buying them.  Granny LaVella was talented at knitting and crochet:

Are you in the mood to shop yet???

Here are a few common sense rules for thrift shop shopping:

  1. Take the price of gasoline into consideration when choosing which stores to visit.  If you have to drive too far, it will defeat the purpose of saving money.
  2. Check the merchandise carefully for flaws.  Remember you are buying second-hand stuff, so it could possibly have some defects.
  3. If the store does not allow you to try clothing on, turn around and walk out!  Some of the stores in our city do not let you try clothing on because they’ve had problems with theft.  I don’t purchase clothing until I’ve tried it on.
  4. If you have a large tote bag, it’s probably a good idea to take it to the thrift shop with you because they don’t always provide bags.
  5. Wear comfortable clothing and shoes today because you will probably be shopping till you drop!

The most important thing to do is have fun!  Saving money should be a happy experience.  🙂

WEAR BROWN SHOES DAY

TL 12-4 WEAR BROWN SHOES DAY

Whether you are going to work, doing your grocery shopping or heading out for school, today is WEAR BROWN SHOES DAY!  Here in Kansas it would be a great idea to wear some warm brown shoes because we are heading for some single-digit temperatures.

A man hasn’t got a corner on virtue just because his shoes are shined.   – Anne Petry

Forgive my parallel here, but just as there are 50 shades of gray, there are, believe it or not, 50 shades of brown!  That’s as far as I’m going with that thought.  LOL.  For a color chart of brown shades, click on this link:

A couple of reminders to men who will wear a suit to work with brown shoes…

Please don’t be tempted to pull that lightweight tan suit from the back of your closet today.  That is a suit to be worn in the summertime and even though it would indeed go with brown shoes, it would look silly and out-of-place in winter!  Remember it is December, guys!  Make sure you don’t try to wear a black suit with brown shoes – that’s just wrong.  Make sure that suit coat or sports coat has some brown in it.

A better bet is to wear a heavy wool sports jacket with dark brown slacks (if your company would cut you some slack – no pun intended).  A suit doesn’t always have to matchy-matchy and a sports jacket can look just as classy as an actual suit, in my humble opinion.

Funny that a pair of really nice shoes make us feel good in our heads — at the extreme opposite end of our bodies. – Levende Waters

Most women have many pairs of brown shoes in all 50 shades (no doubt).  We know that some of our shoes go with skirts and dresses while others go with our dress pants.  Here are my favorite pair of brown shoes for jeans or dress pants (I stopped wearing dresses a long time ago).  I’m a retired lady of leisure these days, so I dress comfortably.    😉
