JEREMIAH 6:16 ON 6/16

TL 6-16 JEREMIAH 6-16 ON 6-16

This is what the Lord says: “Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls. But you said, ‘We will not walk in it.’   – Jeremiah 6:16

If you travel much, you probably do a little planning ahead of time.  A few weeks before we head out, I see my husband studying his big Rand-McNally map.  The prophet says that the Lord wants us to ask where the good way is and walk in it.  It just makes common sense to choose a good way.  I’m sure my husband is not looking at the cow paths that will take us where we need to go.  He’s mapping out a route using interstate highways and byways.YOUR WAYS

So many in the world today are saying they will not walk in that good way.  They are so wrapped up in their rights, they are overlooking the wonderful benefits that follow when they submit to the God of the universe through Christ Jesus.

Jeremiah brings us words from God Himself, yet we still don’t heed them.  How do we find rest for our souls apart from walking the good way provided by God?  We can’t.  We think we can.

Oh – maybe we can find it in making lots of money.  Yeah – that must be the way.  Have you ever met someone who won the lottery?  I have.

We were going to a little church in a small community near our city.  My husband and I took care of the flower garden in the spring and summer months.  One Saturday, we were working in the garden when we heard some people driving by and they were just honking and waving and being crazy.  We knew what they were thinking – they thought we were the couple that won the lottery – but we weren’t.  The guy who did the lawn for the church about a block away had just won the lottery!  The last I heard, he had to sell his house, move without leaving a forwarding address, as I understand it he ended up divorced and basically miserable, wishing he had never played the lotto.  I’m guessing that money doesn’t buy happiness or rest for the soul.

I’ve heard people say that they feel wonderful when they are eating yummy scrumptious food.  Hmm…  this is a path I’ve trod.  The food you eat tastes so good, I’m the first to admit it.  You chew for about 30 seconds, then swallow.  You swap 30 seconds of wonderful for a lifetime of weight (fat, let’s face it) on your body.  Eventually, eating and overeating will catch up with you.  As little as two pounds of extra weight on your knees can do a number on them and a knee replacement is needed.  Disease such as type 2 diabetes can result from being overweight.  I’m guessing food won’t bring rest to our souls.  It’s not even an effective way to deal with anxiety or fear.  Stress eating doesn’t take stress away – it just makes it worse.

How about working out and making our bodies look perfect?  Yeah – surely exercise would bring rest to our souls!  Yeah – let’s just go to the gym every day and become gym rats.  We can get really fit and spend hours looking at our own reflection in the mirror.  Well, yes that’s going to help get weight off and yes that will make our health and overall outlook on life better, but that’s not what brings rest to our souls.  God does want us to take care of our one and only body – but no, it’s still the wrong path to receive rest for our souls.

See where this is going?  People turn to alcohol, drugs, sex, and all sorts of addictive behavior to find satisfaction for the flesh and a way to escape the stresses of life – but it’s not going to give rest for the soul.  It’s only when we get on the right path – God’s path and His ways that we find peace, joy, Agape love (God’s kind of love), and yes, rest for our souls.  🙂

DAY TRIPPIN’ AROUND KANSAS

DAY TRIPPIN' AROUND KANSAS

Ah…  we had so much fun today!  I need to share.  While the country focuses its attention on the Republican debate, we decided to go to our KANSAS STATE FAIR in Hutchinson, KS.

I made a little photo journal…  I hope you enjoy it!  Have FUN!

Whew!  I’m tired tonight.  I think sleep will come quickly.  Goodnight everyone!  Sleep Well.  Remember, give your worries to God – He’ll be up all night long!  🙂

A COMMENTARY FROM THE HEART

COMMENTARY FROM THE HEART 35

Did you hear fireworks until after midnight last night?  We did!  So, you must forgive me because I’m writing in a fog and sleep-deprived state of mind – lol.

Speaking of sleep…  ah – yes – let’s speak of sleep!!!

I have some ideas about getting your zzz’s…  these tips came in handy for me and I hope they help you too!  🙂

  • Every day around 3pm when you begin to doze off at work, you obviously cannot take a nap (but dream of it – yes, you do) – eat an orange!  The citrus scent will perk you up, and the orange contains energy boosting “good” carbohydrates.
  • Whether you work or are retired, there are nights when your mind just won’t shut down!  It’s a frustrating feeling.  You walk around the house saying, “It’s time to sleep.  What is the matter with you?”  I’ve learned that I need to begin winding down about a half hour before I plan to go to bed.  Especially as I get older, I have to back up my words with actions in order to get my body to respond in a positive way.
  • These days I carve out time for an afternoon nap.  Yes, just like Kindergarten, I curl up on my little woven rug and say good-bye to the world for about an hour or so.  We make time for the things that matter most.  In my book – that is definitely replenishing sleep.
  • Is it rude for me to sleep on a trip while my husband is driving?  It doesn’t seem to bother him, so I don’t worry about it.  If I steal some rest during a trip that’s okay with me.
  • Instead of reaching for a nighttime sleep aid (which may be habit-forming), try eating a handful of nuts before you begin your routine and go to bed.  By the time you hit the sheets, you will probably be ready to sleep.

Getting a good night’s sleep is important for our bodies.  That’s when we replenish and revive.  Here’s to a good night’s sleep (and maybe even a nap tomorrow).  🙂

WORLD SLEEP DAY

TL WORLD SLEEP DAY (2ND FRIDAY IN MARCH)

Here’s the slogan for today:

WHEN SLEEP IS SOUND, HEALTH AND HAPPINESS ABOUND!!!

3-13 WHILE THE WORLD IS ASLEEP

I sense a pattern emerging, don’t you?  Daylight Savings time seriously diminishes my ability to stay awake.  It really does take at least a month for me to become fully functional again.  You’ve probably read the same articles I have about how they are going to stop this nonsense with the changing back and forth, but will things ever really change – or rather STOP changing?  Who knows???

A good laugh and a long sleep are the best cures in the doctor’s book.  – Irish Proverb

It occurred to me today that while I am sleeping, God is wide awake.  What a reassuring thought that I don’t have to worry about anything while I’m in dreamland.  Even when I’m in a nightmare, I know God will not let it get too bad.  He will see to it that I wake up in time.  The big ugly dragon won’t eat me!

Are you a sound sleeper?  I sure am – when I’m asleep, nothing wakes me up!  If you can get a sound 8-9 hours of sleep each night, you should be set for any challenge the next day has to offer.

O bed! O bed! delicious bed!
That heaven upon earth to the weary head.
– Thomas Hood, Miss Kilmansegg — Her Dream

How many times have you heard someone say, “I don’t need to sleep.  I can sleep when I’m dead.”  Well, most of the time, those are the folks who have high blood pressure and drink way too much caffeine.  Look, to get a good night’s sleep is not a waste of time, rather, a gift you give yourself.

WHEN YOU JUST WANT TO GO TO SLEEP

There’s a need for rest.  It’s the way human bodies are made – we eat, we move and then we rest.  If you try to fight sleep for long, you will eventually crash and burn – it’s as simple as that.  Don’t wait until you are tired to go to bed – just GO and sleep your 8 hours and start again the next day.

I know that God will be with me in all circumstances, but there’s just something about being well rested that makes my mind and body so much happier and I want to be my best every day, don’t you?  So…  let’s get some SLEEP, okay???  🙂

NATIONAL DAY OF UNPLUGGING

TL 3-6 & 3-7 NATIONAL DAY OF UNPLUGGING

3-6 I'M GOING TO UNPLUG

Perhaps even more often than exchanging pleasantries, we also exchange dissatisfactions…  Two strangers complaining on a subway platform can end up cracking a smile or laughing, and though it would hardly be considered the beginning of a lifelong friendship, it is still neighborly.  – Mariana Alessandri, PhD

Today is the NATIONAL DAY OF UNPLUGGING.  For 24 hours we are encouraged to lay down all technology and do something that we are unaccustomed to…  REST!

Take rest; a field that has rested gives a bountiful crop.   – Ovid

I am a firm believer in rest – naps – relaxing – taking a break.  So…  I am writing this post now (in January) to let you know I will be resting for the next 24 hours.  There won’t be a post tomorrow, but I will return with a new post on March 8th.

“You can always do more.  But if you do too much, they won’t get your best.”  My college roommate’s father, a third-grade teacher, told me this during my first year of teaching.  I was staying late every night and getting burned out.  He helped me accept that I couldn’t chase down every lesson idea or write sentences of explanation for each error.  It gave me the freedom to focus on interaction with kids.  That’s made all the difference.  – Sean McComb

Maybe you can catch up with a Stephen King novel.  Hmm…  if it’s dark, maybe not.

When I was a kid, I believed everything I was told, everything I read, and every dispatch sent out by my own overheated imagination.  This made for more than a few sleepless nights, but it also filled the world…  with colors and textures I would not have traded for a lifetime of restful nights.  – Stephen King

What do you need to do?  Well, I suggest you stop reading this and go REST.  Rest your thumbs so they don’t get arthritis prematurely.  Take a walk and leave your cell phone at home.  No texting.  If you turn your laptop and desktop off completely then you’ll be less tempted to check email or anything else.

Will you celebrate this time of rest with me?  Thinkin’ this guy won’t.

How much more dependent on technology are we in 2015 than we were in 2014?  Is it getting worse?  Is it a generational thing?  Well, of course it is!  When I was a kid I knew how to entertain myself with some of my dad’s old boards, some glue and some of my mom’s leftover yarn!  I used to sit for hours at the kitchen table, creating abstract works of art with these mediums!  Some of them were really quite GROOVY!  LOL!!!

Man is still the most extraordinary computer of all.  – John F. Kennedy

The young people were born into technology and cannot imagine having to use their own imaginations to entertain themselves.  It’s all about communication with them!  The bad news is, they don’t have much inner vision.  The good news is, we are raising great communicators!!!  That’s not a bad thing in the workplace!

What is the sound of no hands texting?  – Brandon Specktor

I’m guessing most of my followers are over 20 years of age, so maybe my plea will not fall on deaf ears.  LOL!!!  Let’s go out and enjoy the real world around us – for just 24 hours.  Prove that you can be connected with those who actually live in your world.  You may learn something you would not have learned about them otherwise, you never know.  Wink!  😉

IRON SHARPENS IRON… FRIENDSHIP

IRON SHARPENS IRON

It began when my jeans didn’t fit anymore.  I’ve been good – I really have!  Okay, I had 2 slices of pizza this week, but that should not have done that much damage.  Then I found a zit.  What am I, a teenager???  Is this how it works – you hit 50 and start reverting back to all the things you hated the first time around???

Then I tried to upload two slide shows on my You Tube account and neither one of them would upload.  I was unable to publish them because You Tube failed to process them.  Technology is so great until it isn’t.

I was trying to make iced tea (yes, I know it’s crazy to do that in the wintertime) and accidentally squirted lemon juice in my eye.  Now, that’ll wake you up fast!  So I spent a great deal of time flushing my eye out with water.  I’m pretty sure I smell lemon fresh from the neck up though.  Note to self:  Wear goggles when juicing lemons for iced tea.

WHAT JESUS SAID

Some days just run like silk.  They are seamless moments of perpetual joy and bliss.  Today ran like a Brill-O pad.  I remember saying out loud at one point, “I’m just gonna call it a day and go back to bed!”

Once I could see out of both eyes clearly, I got on facebook and did a little venting to my group.  You know, those folks are great!  They not only read but they responded with funny stuff and the support that all facebook groups should show.  We have a wonderful group and I cherish every one of them.  We are able to lift one another up and lift ourselves up in the bargain.  I feel so much better after I’ve chatted with them.

The one thing that convinced me that tomorrow will be better and brighter was the reassuring words from my Savior.  He instructed me to rest in Him.  That’s what I’m doing.  I’ll leave this day, confident that the Lord will lead me to a better day tomorrow.  It’s just like His great love.  🙂

A COMMENTARY FROM THE HEART

TL A COMMENTARY FROM THE HEART (13)It’s cold and flu season again!  I hope everyone in your family is well, but it’s a good idea to have a great recipe for chicken noodle soup or chicken and noodles.  It’s a mystery, but something in the broth makes you feel better almost instantly!

Here’s our favorite recipe for chicken and noodles:

Crock Pot Chicken and Noodles (serves 8)

Ingredients:

2 pounds boneless, skinless chicken breasts

1 can cream of chicken soup

1 can cream of celery soup

1 can chicken stock

1 package egg noodles (16 oz. bag)

salt & pepper to taste

Directions:

  • Place the chicken breasts in a 6-qt. slow cooker, then add the soups and stock
  • Put the lid on the slow cooker and turn the heat setting to low.  Cook for 8 hours
  • Boil 1 bag of egg noodles according to the package directions
  • While the noodles are boiling, shred the chicken with two forks, directly in the crock pot
  • Drain the cooked noodles, add to the slow cooker, and gently stir.  Cover the crock pot and continue to heat on low for 15 minutes before serving.  Add some parsley for color if you want to.

When we’re sick we surely don’t mean to share, but there are just viruses going around this year.  Part of taking care of yourself is to feed your body what it needs.  Make sure you also take your meds and get plenty of rest.  It’s not always easy to declare to everyone around you that you’re going to bed for an undetermined amount of time until you feel better, but that’s part of what it takes to feel better.

Sleep has restorative properties.  We don’t give it the credit it deserves in our society.  We’re so determined to tough it out – working through it instead of taking a time-out.  I give you permission…  if you feel sick, please give yourself a time-out.  🙂
