A SUMMER OF PSALMS

Someone asked me if this verse means that we are supposed to have our devotion time early in the morning.  Well, I’m not big on mornings, which explains my dependence on massive amounts of caffeine.  I don’t think the Lord minds if we do our devotions at night.  Often I enjoy devotions at night when I have the house to myself.  I like to have it quiet when I read and write.  During the morning hours it’s too hectic most of the time, and I’m often interrupted with other things.

I believe that “Early will I seek You” means that we acknowledge God and His Lordship in our lives first thing when we wake up.  That, of course, does not take the place of our alone time with God.  That’s also the time when we sit down with our Bibles and a cup of tea or coffee, and God speaks to our spirits.  It’s a time to study God’s Word and pray.

The thing is, we say Good Morning to God, right?  We pray when we get up in the morning, thankful that God woke us up and we were able to get out of bed.  From there our day progresses, but we still pray without ceasing in our minds.  God has our attention while we do whatever we are obligated to do in this life on earth.

This world is a dry and thirsty land.  We face all sorts of adversity from people who don’t understand Christians or their beliefs – and usually don’t want to.  Even our Vice President was labeled insane for praying.  I’m still praying that God will save Joy’s soul in a Damascus-like conversion (like the Apostle Paul), because if God got ahold of Joy, can you imagine what a force she’d be for the right?  It’d be quite a sight to see.  She’s such a strong-willed person.  It’d be so great!  Right now she’s gained the whole world but lost her soul.  I’m praying that she will gain Christ and win others for Him.

Since we live in a desert land on earth, God knows we need to spend some time alone with Him every day.  I don’t feel as strong or confident if I miss my time with the Lord, do you?  He wants us to study His Word and pray, but that is for our benefit, not His.  He’s just as strong whether we show up or not.  We are the ones who need that time with Him.  It’s a gift we give ourselves.  🙂

VESUVIUS DAY

TL 8-24 VESUVIUS DAY

8-24 PLUG IN TO THE SOURCEToday is VESUVIUS DAY!!!  Italy’s Mount Vesuvius is in the Gulf of Naples.  It has erupted three dozen times since 79 AD.  It last erupted in 1944.  For more information go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Vesuvius

As awesome as God’s creation is, it’s more important for me to be plugged in to God on a spiritual level.  How do I stay plugged in?  Through prayer.

This is an analogy that has been used for years, but it’s effective so I’m going to use it again. If you wanted a couple of pieces of toast (oh, that sounds so good) but did not plug the toaster in before pushing the bread into the toaster, would you still get toast? If you answered “yes” I’d like to see you after class to hear your hypothesis.

If you have an older toaster, the bread will sit down inside the toaster and do nothing until you plug the toaster into the outlet. If you have a newer toaster like mine, the toaster will pop the bread back up, as if to say, “Hey, stupid, you have to plug me in before I can make this bread into toast – duh!” Yes, my appliances talk ugly to me. Bad, bad appliances!

So how do you expect to have any power in your life if you refuse to get with God in prayer and Bible study? Do you think all that stuff you learn on Sunday morning is enough to get you through the deep waters that come along in life. Do you not think there will be any deep water in life? Seriously???

Pray without ceasing, – 1 Thessalonians 5:17

Pray all the time. Ok, that doesn’t mean you have to spend every waking hour on your knees, but it does mean that you stay plugged in to the source of your power, strength, joy, peace, patience, loving kindness, gentleness, goodness, self-control. Wow – sounds like the fruits of the Spirit, right? Bingo! If you are not plugged in to the source – the trinity – Father, Son, Spirit – you can’t do life the way it’s supposed to be done. Yep, that’s what I said. An attitude of prayer – those little prayers that shoot through your mind all day long – they are heard by God through Christ. We pray those prayers all day – you know the ones, like, LORD HELP ME – you think He doesn’t hear it? Think again. That is an attitude of prayer. That’s how you stay plugged in to your source! Praise Him today! ❤

A great way to plug-in is to have a devotional book based on the Word of God. My recommendation is one by Lucinda Berry Hill called COFFEE WITH JESUS. It’s unique because it is her original poetry! Poetry, of course resonates with me. If you would like your own copy, please go to the link below. 🙂

Oh – and hey… there’s a rumor she has another book in the works – I don’t know whether I was supposed to tell ya – but I guess I spilled the beans!  I shouldn’t be listening to rumors anyway, right???

HAPPINESS HAPPENS DAY

TL 8-8 HAPPINESS HAPPENS DAY

I think most of us are happiest when we are doing something for someone else. Nothing gives me more joy than to be serving someone in some capacity. I don’t have to be doing anything that is earth-shattering or worthy of the evening news. Simple little acts of kindness make me feel more happy and content. I need to be needed and wanted – we all do!

Today is HAPPINESS HAPPENS DAY!!!  I’m not making it up – it’s a real holiday and I think it’s a great idea for those of us who have lost loved ones. As I study the concept of happiness I’ve come to a couple of conclusions. I know without a shadow of a doubt that my family would want me to be happy. And to be happy, I need to be serving someone else – helping them along their journey in life.

Happiness isn’t on the road to anything – happiness is the road.  – Bob Dylan, quoting his grandmother

Whether it is service in your local church, or as a volunteer somewhere, we heal from our own issues better if we are helping someone else heal too. It’s how God made us – to help each other. I just have one question about the words to this next song. If a person felt like a room without a roof, then would that be considered a room anymore? If a room doesn’t have a roof, hmm… I don’t think it’s really a room. Some of these songs you just can’t over think.

As Christians we can be especially happy because we know our Lord has this crazy world under control! No matter how much bad news we hear (and there is plenty of it), we can look up and say, “Lord, I know You’ve GOT this!”

Happiness is the Lord – a song I learned many years ago, but one that has stayed with me every day of my life.

If you can’t find someone to help, pray about it. God will put someone in your path.  🙂
