KEN CARSON’S BIRTHDAY

TL 3-13 KEN CARSON'S BIRTHDAY

Ken Carson, also known as the KEN DOLL, was introduced by Mattel on this day in 1961.  He was the fictional boyfriend of the BARBIE DOLL, introduced 2 years earlier.  Barbie’s boyfriend had a snazzy line of clothing and accessories.  Barbie & Ken met on the set of a TV commercial in 1961.

Ken’s father was a doctor, and poor Ken has held at least forty occupations.  He just never found himself, I guess.  Somehow he’s able to afford the best stuff – the best clothes and cars.  Hmm…  obviously it’s a fantasy!

So, Ken Carson is 55 years old today.  He still has his boyish looks and irresistible charm, so life has been good to him.  Maybe he has learned the lesson we all have to learn eventually – stuff is just stuff and you can’t take it with you.  He’s decided to take care of his health and say his prayers because he knows that it’s best to trust God with his life.

If Ken is 55, that means that Barbie is now 57.  Hmm…  I imagine some things have dropped – I’m guessing down around her knees.  LOL…  well, that’s life.

It was never clear what their relationship was.  I think many details were left to the child playing with the dolls – to their imagination.  Many of us had Barbie and Ken weddings.  My Barb and Ken got married a few times, with cousin Skipper standing up as their witness.

At one point, my Ken doll had more clothes in his closet than Barbie.  Fortunately I quickly took care of that problem and bought a ton of clothes and accessories for Barbie from my girlfriend’s mom, who made doll clothes.

Ken & Barbie are an important part of many real life plans we make as little girls.  Through them, we think about our futures and what we want to do with our lives.  Happy Birthday, Ken – you good-lookin’ 55 year old!  😉

LOST IN A BOOK

Most writers are also avid readers. Picture a good book and a cup of flavored coffee or green tea, with a pet curled up either on your lap or on the floor next to you. That is a picture-perfect reading day. Add a nice little rain shower outdoors and it’s even better!

Reading is one of the best ways to escape reality known to man. If you check books out from the library, it’s also one of the least expensive ways to escape. I enjoy movies and TV shows, but to be honest, that costs too much and I’m not one for re-runs, so it’s better if I check out a book from the library. No re-runs and I save a ton of money.

There are some very good choices at my local library. There are imaginary worlds that I have no problem getting completely immersed in. I wonder why I am so easily sucked in? Maybe it’s because my brain effectively simulates the events of the book in the same way it processes events in the real world. I don’t know – just a guess.

When the Bible talks about how God will provide a WAY OF ESCAPE from sin and sorrow and difficult times, I believe that the number one escape is that of getting lost in a work of fiction!

It’s so easy to put myself in one character’s shoes and pretend I am her! So of course it becomes a quest of sorts to finish the book – to find out how the story ends – what happens to ME.

Maybe you’re reading this and have no idea what I’m talking about. That means you’ve never gotten lost in a book before. Believe it or not, it takes a little practice to lose yourself in a book! Just find a book about something that interests you. I like books set in the Civil War era. Find a quiet place where you won’t be disturbed. Try to relate with at least one of the characters. Pretty soon, you’ll become that character – if you will let yourself.

Give it a go… it’s really fun! 😉

BE GONE CABIN FEVER
Yesterday I was sitting at the computer and actually heard birds chirping outside my basement window. It was a reminder of spring, and I am so ready for it, aren’t you? When you have cabin fever, what do you do? Where is your “happy place” when being indoors is making you crazy?

I escape into the internet. Last week I was researching tropical climates and by the time I was finished, it felt as though I had been on an extended vacation. I like those kind of vacations because I don’t have to pack or hassle with security at the airport!

My husband watches movies that take place in tropical settings. Not long ago he watched “Donovan’s Reef” with John Wayne. Movies have long been an excellent way to escape the harsh reality we live in.   “Donovan’s Reef” is not in the public domain, but it is posted on You Tube, so go on over there and watch it.

I’m so blessed in my life and there seems to be an endless supply of inspiration around me. I also like to work on my scrapbook on occasion. Most of our vacations were taken in nice weather and looking at the photos again allows me to re-live the trips!

Of course I’m so thankful for my keyboard and for music! I don’t know what I’d do without that to pass the time during the winter. My keyboard even has headphones so I won’t disturb anyone. I just play for my enjoyment.

The truth is, I’d rather not be stuck inside the house. I am thankful, however, for the ways of escape that are available to me. Some women like to bake when the weather is cold, but in our house that is not a good idea since we are diabetics. Baking would automatically involve eating, and most baked goods are not the most wholesome.

A lot of people like snow. I find it to be an unnecessary freezing of water.  – Carl Reiner

It’s my hope and prayer that you have stayed sane through this winter. Some days it can be a challenge, but I know you can do it if you put your mind to it.
