CURMUDGEONS DAY

TL 1-29 CURMUDGEONS DAY

1-29 MAKE A CURMUDGEON LAUGH

In this day of high prices, high taxes, high debt worldwide and in our own country, it is such a temptation to have a bad attitude.  If one was given to such moods, cynical and sour, today would be the day to show it.  But that would be taking the easy way out.  We don’t do that here on the blog, do we?

Is it possible to celebrate CURMUDGEONS DAY without being grumpy yourself?  Well, of course you can.  I want to challenge you to make a curmudgeon laugh!  It may be the largest challenge you’ve received all month, but I have faith that you can do it.  I see you scratching your head and saying, “Linda, you must be crazy!  You want me to go out and FIND a grouchy curmudgeon and make him / her laugh?”  YES – that’s what I’m asking you to do!

This day is not like Hermit Day when we stay inside all day and do nothing.  There’s a great big world out there and it is, unfortunately, filled with curmudgeons who need to snap out of it!

A self-proclaimed curmudgeon, Charles Murray, wrote a book called “The Curmudgeon’s Guide to Getting Ahead” for young people just getting started in the workplace.  I would recommend it to every young person who wants to get ahead in the business world.  Mr. Murray said the book started out as a way to “vent” about the mannerisms of millennials (I understand completely).

I enjoyed LIKE watching this LIKE presentation he gave and LIKE hope you like it too… LIKE.  I quite literally rolled out of my chair when I heard him describe vocabulary with the overuse of the word LIKE as a LIKE TIC.  LOL!!!

It is not a day to excuse bad behavior and become grumpy yourself – no, but nice try.  If you are a grouch, it is not something to be proud of, but a mood that needs to be overcome.  We won’t be celebrating grumpiness on the blog today, but we will be the ones who go about spreading sunshine and the love of Christ to those who are downcast for whatever reason.

Have you ever crossed paths with a curmudgeon who seemed determined to frown back at you no matter what?  Don’t be discouraged – just keep smiling.  Whether they want to admit it or not, your smile is probably the best thing they could possibly receive.  Don’t give up!

A smile confuses an approaching frown.  – Author Unknown

If you are not typically a negative person, you could play a little trick on your family.  You could purposefully act grouchy around your loved ones – but make sure when you’re finished they know you were just joking!

A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.  – Proverbs 17:22

Wouldn’t today be a great day to sit around the table with your family and make a list of blessings?  Appreciate your life and talk about why you really should not be grouchy and grumpy and difficult to live with.

If you belong to God, you are blessed and have no reason to be anything but happy and appreciative and smiling.  🙂

BOOK LOVER’S DAY

TL 11-1 BOOK LOVER'S DAY

11-1 WHEN I LOOK AT A BOOK

If you find prayer to be a bit intimidating like I do, read “Before Amen” by Max Lucado.

Would you like to go on a great adventure and make some new friends along the way?  May I suggest you pick up a book today?  Between the covers of a book are untold treats for the mind’s eye.  When I walk into a bookstore my brain kicks in and my heart beats faster.

A book is the only place in which you can examine a fragile thought without breaking it, or explore an explosive idea without fear it will go off in your face. It is one of the few havens remaining where a man’s mind can get both provocation and privacy.  – Edward P. Morgan

Today is BOOK LOVER’S DAY!  What better time to explore all the different types of books we can use to make our lives richer and fuller (or maybe just get a good laugh).

There are several different sections to choose from in your local library or bookstore.  Maybe you’re not interested in going on a wild adventure today, maybe you just want some specific help with something personal.  I find the Self-help section very useful and have landed there many times.

Let books be your dining table,
And you shall be full of delights
Let them be your mattress
And you shall sleep restful nights.
– Author Unknown

Our local library has a Travel section that catches my eye when the weather is bleak and I have cabin fever during the winter months.  Those books – any of them, can transport me from Wichita in winter to anywhere I want to go.  It’s like a great vacation for my mind which ultimately improves my mood and attitude as well.

How about a Thriller?  As long as it is broad daylight and I’m not alone in the house, it’s okay on occasion.

There’s one thing I’m sure about.  An opening line should invite the reader to begin the story.  It should say:  Listen.  Come in here.  You want to know more about this.  – Stephen King

I enjoy a good Biography now and then.  Although fiction tickles my fancy once in a while, I enjoy the real life stories of people who have shaped the course of history.  The “killing” books that Bill O’Reilly has published come to mind – and they are very well researched and keep me turning pages for hours.

There are sections called Creative and Art, respectfully.  Whether you are interested in learning a craft or you just wish to appreciate art, there are plenty of books available.

The Religious section does, of course, interest me.  I have favorite authors such as Max Lucado and Billy Graham (of course, his latest project was in the form of a video called My Hope for America)  I’ve posted that video on my blog, but would encourage you to watch it on YouTube.  At 95 years old he is still pleading with us to pray and seek God’s face and turn from our wicked ways.  There is a special place in heaven for that man.

As you all know, my favorite poet is Lucinda Berry Hill.  She has a new book coming out soon and I hope you plan to add it to your Coffee collection.  Her first book, “Coffee with Jesus” gives us a poem for every week of the year.  Her new book is “A Second Cup with Jesus” – and it is even better than the first book.  I hope you will make it part of your home library.  I know I will.

SMILE POWER DAY

Did you know you have a super power? Yes you do! Today is SMILE POWER DAY!!! When you smile at someone sincerely it’s a sure bet that they will smile back. What is a true smile? Well, if you’re fighting those crow’s-feet around your eyes, you won’t like my answer, but a sincere smile is the kind that makes your eyes squint! Hey, I only do the research and report what I learn. My advice is to give the world a sincere smile and use more face cream for the crow’s-feet!

When you smile it immediately releases endorphins that boost your mood and act as a natural pain reliever. Smiling is one of the most healthy things you can do for yourself and for everyone around you. Smile to look younger and feel younger. If you walk into situations that make you uncomfortable wearing a smile, it will not only instill a sense of confidence in you, but will make you look more controlled and relaxed. This also puts others at ease. People in positions of authority are often seen smiling. As a boss, it’s more important to choose your attitude than which power tie you will wear!

A smile is contagious; be a carrier.  – Unknown

Even if you are not in the best of moods, if you decide to smile, your mood will improve. Choosing to approach a challenge with a good positive attitude and a smile will increase productivity. A smile combined with happy thoughts will ward off a bout with minor depression. We know that laughing lowers blood pressure, but did you know that smiling does too? If you want to boost your immune system, put a big smile on your face.

There is no such thing in anyone’s life as an unimportant day.  – Alexander Woollcott

There are no good reasons to go around with a sour expression on your face.

HAPPINESS IS CONTAGIOUS. BE A CARRIER!!! 🙂

DANCE LIKE A CHICKEN DAY

TL 5-14 DANCE LIKE A CHICKEN DAY

I am a dancer. I believe that we learn by practice. Whether it means to learn to dance by practicing dancing or to learn to live by practicing living…. In each it is the performance of a dedicated precise set of acts, physical or intellectual, from which comes shape of achievement, a sense of one’s being, a satisfaction of spirit. One becomes in some area an athlete of God.  – Martha Graham, c.1953

Do you think exercise has to be dull and boring and repetitious? Well, think again because today we are going to do the “Funky Chicken!” Today is DANCE LIKE A CHICKEN DAY!!! Remember the 1980’s movie “The Blues Brothers” with John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd? It might be a good idea to watch that sometime today just to see some good chicken dancin’.

Dance in the body you have and make it the best you’ve ever done.  – Agnes

As you practice the dance, you can incorporate your own unique style. Add a jump or whatever you want to do. The most important thing is to have fun with it. Dancing should not be something that takes a lot of thought process. Life is too serious already – dancing should be fun!

There is a bit of insanity in dancing that does everybody a great deal of good.  – Edwin Denby

When you dance, you release endorphins, the feel-good hormone that boosts your mood. It’s not just about burning calories, it’s about having a good time and being silly! Loosen up – lighten up – be silly once in a while! Smile and do the funky chicken to your favorite music! Or just make up your own music.

Police Dispatcher: Use of unnecessary violence in the apprehension of the Blues Brothers HAS been approved.

Oh… and yeah – I WILL be watching “The Blues Brothers” tonight, if you wondered!!! And the scene where they do the funky chicken… I’ll be up doin’ it too!!! 🙂

INTERNATIONAL MOMENT OF LAUGHTER DAY

TL 4-14 INTERNATIONAL MOMENT OF LAUGHTER DAY

Would you rather do ten sit-ups or laugh until you spew root beer (diet, of course) from your nose???  Okay, that’s what I thought.  Who of us would not rather have a good laugh than exercise?  I know I would!  Did you know that a good hearty laugh can take the place of those painful sit-ups?  It’s true!  The same muscles that get worked during sit-ups are also worked during a really good laugh.

Laughter is the best medicine for so many reasons.  Endorphins are instantly released and boost mood better than any anti-depressant on the market!  When you laugh, your blood pressure lowers because you relax inside.  A person who does not take life, or themselves, too seriously is a healthier person and a person that others enjoy being around.  That sounds like a real win/win to me!

Lucinda Berry Hill wrote a great poem for this day:

4-14 MOMENTS OF LAUGHTER

Love is an inside job. Take a moment to laugh today.  If there is someone in your life who has influenced your good humor, give them a call and let them know you appreciate it.  Enjoy that person while you can – because all too soon the people who mean the most to us are suddenly not there anymore.

You grow up the day you have your first real laugh—-at yourself. – Ethel Barrymore

  • Be careful if you plan to pull a practical joke on someone – sometimes those things can backfire.
  • Visit your local greeting card store and look at some of the funny cards.
  • Share a funny story with a friend.  Why laugh alone?
  • Watch your favorite funny movie – or read other posts on my blog.
  • Do you have a friend that makes you laugh when you hear them laugh?  Yeah – that’s the friend to get ahold of today.
  • Get naked and laugh at yourself in a full-length mirror.  This one doesn’t work for some of you – I get it.
  • Show your baby pictures to someone who has never seen them.
  • Go to a joke shop and buy a laugh box.  Put it in a co-worker’s cubicle, turn it on and run.
  • Make faces at the clerk in the grocery store until they laugh.  Then say, “Mission accomplished.”

You don’t really have to think up a reason to laugh, but you should have a rational explanation for when someone asks why you are laughing uncontrollably in public.  Some folks just need to be assured that you haven’t gone a little crazy.

Sometimes the laugh that wells up inside you should not be stifled. Sometimes it just needs to bubble to the surface and escape! 🙂
