A COMMENTARY FROM THE HEART

I will not set before my eyes anything that is worthless. I hate the work of those who fall away; it shall not cling to me.  – Psalm 101:3

Have you taken a look at the shows that are to première tonight?  The only one that piqued my interest was one called “Quantico”, which I’m thinking is a spin-off the popular show “Criminal Minds”.  Then I thought of how often that program upset me and got me scared just before bedtime – which – hello – that’s helpful.  I’m sure “Quantico” is going to be cranked up a notch – it surely will be.  Do I really need to set that before my eyes?  I may be watching DVD’s tonight.  Yes, they’re old and I’ve watched them a gazillion times – but they don’t give me nightmares!

Most of the new titles are either sexually suggestive or look uninteresting to me.  Yes, I’m getting old – I admit it.  Give me “Murder, She Wrote” DVD’s and a bowl of veggie dip and fresh veggies to snack on!

The shows of today and the techno-babble music…  it’s lost me.  I’m out.  I was working out the other day to a song where the girl kept singing YOU DON’T MAKE ME HIGH ANYMORE.  I try not to listen closely…  but seriously – it was impossible to tune that out – it was repeated over and over and…  OVER!  You can put down the repeating of the choruses in church all you want – but in my humble opinion…  they got that brilliant idea from the world.

When I’d finally heard the last annoying complaint that YOU DON’T MAKE ME HIGH ANYMORE…  I said to myself…  “Then let me tell ya, girlfriend…  you are NOT ready to get married to one man for the rest of your life!”  Just sayin’…

What an immature statement to make in a song – so-called song.  A very long…  redundant, repetitive song.  Ugh.

A wicked plan or purpose is thus represented as having a tendency to fasten itself on a man, or to “stick to him”—as pitch, or wax, or a burr does.  – Albert Barnes.

We have to be so careful about not only what we say and do, but what we take in.  How many women listen to that song, that statement – and then decide that they should probably move on?  You don’t know what action may be triggered in another person.

As you look for new TV shows to watch and new music to listen to, keep in mind this simple Bible verse.  Don’t waste your time with anything worthless.  Don’t let anything stick to you that does not feed your soul.  Find something that makes your brain work a little bit.  There’s something about helping a detective (or a mystery book writer) solve crimes…  I get wrapped up in it and help Jessica Fletcher – even after all these years!  🙂

ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY

ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY

MAKE ME LAUGH
August 13th 1997 was South Park’s TV début on Comedy Central.   I’m less than impressed with South Park.

Foul language does not shock me. If you use it to my face, I won’t look at you with my mouth gaping open and my hand covering it – you will, however, get my UGLY look. Trust me, if I give it to you, you will know you are getting it!

People who choose to use foul language strike me as unimaginative, uncreative, uneducated, undignified and possess very little command over the English language. A truly funny person does not have to lean on that weary crutch to get laughs. The test of comedy is to leave out the offensive word. If the word is left out, is the joke still just as funny (or maybe even funnier)? Then why stoop to that level?  Comedians refer to this brash type of comedy as EDGY. I think it just STINKS.

There are a handful of comedians who have not caved under the pressure of those who choose to take EDGY AVENUE. Of course my mind goes back to the day of Minnie Pearl and Archie Campbell. Yes, I really liked Hee Haw, I admit it. But that was the kind of comedy that required some real talent. My favorite bit was when Archie told the story of Rindercella, but I like all the bedtime stories for adults.

A real comedian is one who knows their strengths and weaknesses. They capitalize on both because they rely on intellect. There is still an audience for the people who choose to take the high road and be funny without using foul language. It’s just not needed!

I’m thankful for comedians like Archie Campbell who used pure talent to make people laugh.

The words you say are either a gift to the recipient or they equal stinky, breath-stealing mildew. Words are important; they matter. I get that they have a “Constitutional right” to say what they want, but I wish comedians would just make me laugh without making me want to hurl. :-/

COMPLIMENT
It takes literally seconds to build someone up. What a shame it is when we choose to either say nothing or tear someone down! Have you ever made a conscious decision to encourage others? How are your iron-sharpening skills?

A compliment can make someone’s day, but it needs to be sincere and not phony in any way. It’s better to say nothing at all than to offer insincere flattery. Most of us can spot a fake a mile away.

We get so busy that we don’t even think about anyone else. It’s sad, but true. Did you know that every time you take your mind off of yourself and think of someone else, you lower your blood pressure? So, if you can’t offer a compliment for the sake of someone else, keep in mind that it will make you healthier to think of others and encourage them. Interesting how nature works, huh?

Humans are meant to help one another. We are creatures who crave relationships, even if it is a brief encounter. Standing in line at the grocery store or the post office there are opportunities to be an encourager and give them a compliment. Too many times we think happy thoughts about others but don’t say it.

Have you ever felt led to encourage someone? That is when you just wait for the leading of the Holy Spirit. You will know when the time is right to speak because that door of opportunity opens and you will know what to say and when to say it.

Speak to everyone you meet with love and compassion. Pretend that you are the only person they will speak to all day. What kind of impression do you want to leave with them? If you have encouraged them, chances are they will pay that encouragement forward. If you leave them feeling like less than they should, that mood is contagious as well.

Choose your words carefully and invoke peace around you. ❤
