A COMMENTARY FROM THE HEART

A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.  – Proverbs 17:22

The Great Physician prescribes a cheerful heart for what ails us.  Who are we to question that divine advice?  Today is all about cheer – laughter – positivity.  Disclaimer:  These images may prompt responses that require you to open your mouth.  Please swallow the beverage you’re drinking before looking at them to avoid spewing, which could mess up your computer.  Don’t ask me how I know that.  No, seriously – don’t ask.

Grab your coffee and let’s look at some pictures.  I’m drinking coffee from my heart mug today.  ❤

WE LOVE ELVIS

TL 5-25 WE LOVE ELVISIMG_0024

I got a photo taken in Branson on August 22, 2004 with an Elvis impersonator – it was snapped after the show, so he was not exactly spring fresh – but we get photo ops when we can.  I’ll bet he never went to a gym – doing those shows is a workout in itself.  You know what’s in my scrapbook along with this photo?  One of his scarves – or whatever you call those sweat catchers…  eeeewww.  Funny story though – I was so short there’s no way I could have caught one before all those tall girls – so my sweet hubby jumped up and got it for me – then handed it over.  Teamwork – yep!

Who thinks that real life is just overwhelming right now?  I’m raising my hand!  Seriously, there have been NO positives in the news and even though someone is running around saying America will be GREAT again, well…  never mind.  I’ll tell ya what, I’ll believe it when I see it – let’s put it that way.

So when real life gets to be too much, what do we need to do?  That’s right – we need to have fun and laugh.  And guess what I have today?  Yep – my friend John Coyote made a YouTube video – another Elvis tribute – but I gotta tell ya – this one is a hoot!  But John’s voice does have an Elvis-like quality – but the dramatics along with it are too funny!

And honestly, I didn’t even know Elvis recorded this song – I think the first time I heard The First Time (lol – that was confusing) – was when it was sung by Roberta Flack.  I had the 45 record of it, so of course that’s the one I’m most familiar with.  Of course, John would know for sure because I think he’s older than me (LOL) – yeah – he’s probably not – I’m just a music illiterate.  Don’t hit me, John!

I think John should be an Elvis impersonator, don’t you?  They get paid pretty good, I think – and he’s certainly got the talent and that ham bone quality…  yep – I think he needs to consider a possible career move.  I don’t know if they’re hiring in Branson, but he surely should check it out.  🙂

A COMMENTARY FROM THE HEART

TL A COMMENTARY FROM THE HEART (2)

It really is the little things that bring happy sparkles into your life!  Laughing is at the top of my list, but there are certain events that come to mind – and won’t likely be leaving my mind anytime soon.  I hope I can hang on to all the happy sparkles and think on the positive aspects in every circumstance.

If we can re-live these little moments when the going gets tough, it not only brings a smile to our face, but it puts a little more courage and self-confidence in us.  These are moments when we were successful and happy and ready to high-five everybody!

  • One morning I tried for the umpteenth time to flip an egg over without breaking the yoke.  In 54 years of life I have never flipped an egg over without the yoke breaking, but guess what?  I carefully scooped the egg up with the spatula and flipped it over – and it was intact!!!  That was the best egg sammich ever!
  • Writing is my passion and music is my life.  Imagine my surprise when I was asked to write about music and got paid for it!  It’s not even about the money, but it’s about the words I write being read and appreciated.  There’s no better feeling to be sure.  Everyone wants to be appreciated.
  •  A friend recently asked if she could come to my house and listen to me play the piano.  I asked how long she had exhibited signs of instability – and she laughed and told me she was serious.  What a boost it was to know that she enjoyed hearing me play.  It gave me more confidence in the face of uncertainty.

Happy sparkles are gifts that God gives us.  He delivers them to us in many ways, through others or even when we’re alone with Him.  When we count our blessings and remember the happy sparkles along the way, we become the joyful Christian that Jesus wants us to be!

IRON SHARPENS IRON… FRIENDSHIP

IRON SHARPENS IRON

We all have a circle of besties…  we get together and giggle and share the latest.  At some point the conversation turns to our favorite TV shows – which of course we all watch and can relate to on some level.

Some characters on sitcoms make us feel as though we can tackle anything, don’t they?  My friends and I watch “Mike & Molly”.  The second we read this line, we were hooked:

A couple meets at an Overeaters’ Anonymous meeting.

We absolutely adore Melissa McCarthy for her self-confidence and attitude toward life both in character and out.  We agree…  we want some-a-dat!

At this point in my life, I just think, ‘Who cares?’  – Melissa McCarthy

The world likes to put stereotypes on plus-size women (a club I’m a charter member of).  They want to shame us into submission at the dinner table and give us disapproving glances if they see us eating low-fat frozen yogurt at Braum’s.

Yes, of course I want to lose some weight to help my health – but it’s certainly not for reasons of vanity.  While most women are worrying about whether they are bikini ready, I’m hoping I can still wear my capris from last summer.

I don’t understand why if you’re a certain size, designers think your taste level goes down.”  – Melissa McCarthy

We admire her for so many reasons.  It seems that her true self comes through in her character on television.  My writer friends and I especially like the episodes when Molly is writing – and very strange things happen.

Isn’t it funny how conversations take funny twists and turns when we are with our best friends?  We discuss real life – and suddenly, real life brings to mind a crazy television show.  Sometimes it’s a toss-up as to which is more true to life.

There are a few full episodes of “Mike & Molly” on You Tube, but I won’t post them here because of copyright infringement.

I believe that it matters how you treat people.  I believe in heaven.  I don’t believe that this is it, and we’re done.  – Melissa McCarthy

We have these shows to remind us that life can get much more crazy than it has.  Aren’t we thankful for the folks like Melissa McCarthy who dramatize reality every Monday night on CBS?  We would rather laugh at situations than cry about them – or at least that’s what my friends and I have decided.  🙂

A COMENTARY FROM THE HEART

TL A COMMENTARY FROM THE HEART (16)

There are times in life when everything seems to be going wrong.  We don’t lose our faith to be sure, but it just seems as though nothing is going in the right direction.  When we go through the rough patches in life, it’s a good idea to try to find some humor along the way – I know it won’t make things better – but it helps!

THROUGH LIFE

Today’s post is dedicated to the humor we need.  I found some pretty cute jokes that I hope help you over the speed bumps of life.  I’m driving over a few of them myself right now – so I need a little funny bone therapy too!  😉

A minister had a horse for sale. A man came to see about buying him . The horse seemed perfect and the price was right. But the minister said “There are two things to remember. He only goes to PRAISE THE LORD and only stops to AMEN. ” The man starts trotting and then cantering the horse but he realized they were headed to the cliffs. WHOA, STOP, STOP NOW but the horse sped up directly to the edge of the cliff. The man suddenly remembers and yells AMEN. The horse stops at the very edge and the man was thrilled and yelled PRAISE THE LORD.

How about the stubborn determination of a little girl in kindergarten?

A Sunday School teacher was walking around observing her kindergarten classroom of children while they were drawing pictures.  As she got to one girl who was working diligently, she asked what the drawing was.

The girl replied, “I’m drawing God.”  The teacher paused and said, “But no one knows what God looks like.”

Without looking up from her drawing, the girl replied, “They will in a minute.”

I love this joke about the atheist showing God how he can create.

An atheist scientist came to God and said, “We’ve figured out how to make a man without you.”

God said, “OK, let me see you do it.”

So the atheist bent down to the ground and scooped up a handful. But God stopped him and said, “Oh, no you don’t. Get your own dirt!”

I pray that God will use these jokes to make you smile and lift your spirits.  We all face challenges of all sorts in life but if we can find some humor along the way and believe that God will help us through, we know that it’s gonna be okay!  Wink!  😉

CHRISTMAS EVE

TL 12-24 CHRISTMAS EVE

P&P ON THE EVE OF CHRISTMAS

Well – it is Christmas Eve 2014!  Everyone has their own traditions, but this year I highly recommend you include this  movie in your plans.  This movie is my pick for sure – Marlo Thomas is one of my favorites!  The charitable work her father started and she has taken over is so heart-touching.  This movie is a bit of a tear-jerker, but I believe a good Christmas movie usually is, don’t you?

This film is from 1977, but has always touched my heart.  It’s a retelling of the great movie, “It’s a Wonderful Life”.

It is Christmas in the heart that puts Christmas in the air.  – W.T. Ellis

Put on your Christmas Eve Jammies and fuzzy socks, grab some organic popcorn and favorite diet soda.  Curl up and enjoy!  Go over to You Tube and watch “It Happened One Christmas”.  I’ve been told to post the links here would violate copyright laws.  Bummer.   😦

Christmas is not as much about opening our presents as opening our hearts.  – Janice Maeditere

Of course we remember that the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ is the real REASON FOR THE SEASON, but at the same time, we need to take some time to relax and enjoy a good movie that helps us open our hearts.  There’s nothing to put life into real perspective like a classic Christmas tale.

I watch Christmas movies this time of year like most men watch football – hey, it’s my addiction!  Have a blessed Christmas Eve everyone.  Open your heart and show some love.  ❤

If you are looking for a perfect Christmas gift, may I suggest a new devotional book by Lucinda Berry Hill?  Everyone needs a new devotional book to begin the new year!

BACKWARD DAY

TL 1-31 BACKWARD DAY

What is Yad Drawkcab???  Well…  it’s BACKWARD DAY!!!  This is the time to do everything backward.  It’s so much easier for kids in school to do this.  Adults have been conditioned and need to literally make themselves do things backward.  Oh to be young again – and have the ability to be silly.

Write backward, talk backward. Wear your shirt with the back in the front. Eat a steak dinner for breakfast, and pancakes for dinner. Play a board game from the finish line to the start. Put a masking tape line on the floor and practice walking backwards.  Whatever you do, make it fun!

Just remember to post every selfie you take today – you can’t pick and choose which ones you put on facebook!

To see a person’s true face, look at the photos that do not get posted.  – Brandon Specktor

Use your imagination!  The sky is the limit.  What sort of backward things can you think of???

Remember, Ginger Rogers did everything Fred Astaire did, but backwards and in high heels.  – Faith Whittlesey

This would be so much fun to celebrate with your kids or grandkids – and make sure you have the camera handy because you will definitely make some great memories for that scrapbook!

If you do decide to celebrate, make sure to share your photos with me on facebook!

Some parent is very talented with their video camera!  I really like the game of pool.  The spaghetti…  um – not so much.  I wonder how they did that.

To look backward for a while is to refresh the eye, to restore it, and to render it the more fit for its prime function of looking forward.  – Margaret Fairless Barber, The Roadmender

For one day, bond with your children in a most unusual way.  Live life to the fullest with your little ones while you have them.  You want to look backwards in time and remember more laughter than tears.

Again with the food…  LOL!!!  Oh well…

In every real man a child is hidden that wants to play.   – Friedrich Nietzsche

Today I read about a mini-golf place that advertised they will celebrate Backward Day.  They will have everyone play the course backwards from hole 18 to hole 1.  Admission is also backwards – adults pay as children.  How fun would that be?

Happy is he who still loves something he loved in the nursery:  He has not been broken in two by time; he is not two men, but one, and he has saved not only his soul but his life.   – G.K. Chesterton

That looks like fun.  The goal is to spend time with your kids and be happy!  May you and your family have a lovely Backward Day!  🙂
