A COMMENTARY FROM THE HEART

COMMENTARY FROM THE HEART 35

Father, we yearn for the satisfaction that only You can give. Help us discard the things that leave us empty and thirsting, and exchange them for the satisfaction of the living water You offer.  – Bobby Fulks

thirst

Been prayin’ for a shower???

Have you felt thirsty lately?  You take more time to workout at the gym.  Nope, that isn’t what you needed.  You take more time to relax and watch television.  Huh…  nope, that didn’t help either.  You are just thirsty and something is missing.  Then you decide that it’s time to take a little road trip – surely that will do the trick.  You know what?  Your thirst is still not quenched.  Now you’re beginning to get a little ticked off – and frustrated.

You sit quietly in your living room, wondering what it’s going to take to fill that longing inside.  You try some of that flavored carbonated water they sell at Walmart for 68 cents a bottle.  Nope…  that’s not the kind of water that will satisfy the kind of need you have.  You walk into your study – and there you see your old friends – your Bible and favorite devotional book.  It dawns on you that you’ve got the bookmark stuck on the page that says April 16th.  Well…  it’s not April 17th today, is it?  You haven’t opened the book or your Bible for a while.

It’s a special kind of water you need…  God’s LIVING WATER.  His special water – filtered through the Holy Ghost filter with letters in red spoken by Christ Jesus Himself.

thirstyDid you read the last stanza???  DON’T IGNORE YOUR SOUL, WATER IT AND SEE.  What good advice.  We run toward all sorts of things we can see with our eyes, convinced that those are the things that will satisfy.  Maybe those things make us happy for a short while, but the happiness is short-lived and the feeling of longing for something better is back.

Hey – I’m not perfect – far from it.  You know where I got that example about the devotional having a bookmark placed in it on the April page?  I got that example from personal experience!  Life gets busy for all of us.  There is a lot of competition for our attention, isn’t there?  We have games to go to and jobs we have to do.  We have kids that need things – and grandkids that need to be spoiled.  The list is endless – but our souls do thirst if we don’t make it a priority – a matter of our WILL to set aside time to study God’s Word and commit it to our hearts and minds.taking-the-plunge

The truth is, we will be lied to in this world – by people we never thought would lie.  The only reliable place to find counsel is not social media (oh…  gag!)  It’s found in God’s Holy Word – your Bible is where you can go for counsel and honesty.  You will be filled with God’s peace and joy.  You will know His principles and gain wisdom for practical application in your everyday life.  🙂

1-15 PLAYING DRESS UP

So much for dreaming of warmer weather – back to reality.  It’s winter again…  sigh.

In my life I never felt so safe and secure as I did wearing my daddy’s coat and cap.  I can’t explain it, but it made me feel like I would always know love.  ❤

12-64

You know, I’ve heard that the clothes make the man / woman.  That’s true, but I think a hat defines us!  What role am I playing?  If I’m a chef, I’m probably wearing one of those puffy white hats.  If I’m putting out a fire, I’m wearing a fireman’s helmet.  If I’m a cowboy, I’m wearing a cowboy hat – a white one.  Today I’m a woman of leisure in the Red Hat Society, wearing my beautiful red hat and not caring what anyone thinks of it (talk about HATTITUDE…)

Then comes Winter, with bluster and snow,
That brings to our cheeks the ruddy glow…

When it’s cold and snow is falling, most of us bundle up with gloves, a scarf and a stocking cap.  That’s certainly a way of defining us as cold!

Men used to wear hats all the time.  By the time Robert F. Kennedy took office as President, the trend was coming to an end.  I was just a kid, but I remember my daddy saying that men didn’t wear hats anymore because the President didn’t want to wear one and mess up his perfect hair.  Now – I don’t know if that’s true or not, so please don’t quote me on it!

I don’t know a lot about hats, but I learned what a bucket hat is and what a snap back hat is!  Huh – I learned something today!

We are defined by our hats, or at least our attitudes are.  Have you ever tried to wear more than one hat at a time?  Well, of course you haven’t – that would be ridiculous!  If I try to wear too many hats at one time it makes me a little cranky, how about you?  God loveth a cheerful giver – of time, talent and treasure.  He did not intend for His precious children to stack hats on their heads!  He wants us to serve, yes.  Does He want us to take on every responsibility we are asked to take?  I don’t think so.

How many hats do you wear?  How many hats have you thrown into a ring?  How many hats have you hung up because you simply have too many hats?

Maybe today we could take just a moment to count how many hats we wear – how many roles we play in life.  This may be a good time to take inventory…  then let’s pick out our favorite hat and ROCK IT!  😉

SEPTEMBER IS SELF-IMPROVEMENT MONTH

SEPTEMBER IS SELF-IMPROVEMENT MONTH

Be a first-rate version of yourself, not a second-rate version of someone else.
– Judy Garland

Where has this year gone? Today is a brand new month! Hello, September!!! You know, most people make New Year’s resolutions, but I make New Month resolutions. This month I resolve to stop comparing me or my life with others. They have not walked my path and I have not walked theirs. September’s theme is “Live and Let Live”.  I vow not to compete, but be complete.

I happened to see an advertisement today that acted as a catalyst for this post.

Name: Paul & Darla Star Date Of Event: 9/1/13 Event Type: Reunion Venue: Century II – Wichita, KS    Comments: Bob from Notable Genius was AMAZING. You were the best DJ! We wanted high energy and people on the dance floor all night and he was able to keep all age groups happy and dancing.

I understand the value of word-of-mouth recommendations for advertisement, but there seems to be so much competition in life that I forget to look at my face in the mirror and promise to be a better me today than I was yesterday.  Sometimes we drown in the competition around us.  I know it’s just good business to put your name out there and get noticed, but sometimes it’s a good idea to be interested in giving someone else a hand up.  I wonder if it would hurt a person in business so much to do that.  There are too many heartless, competitive businesses.  When did the Golden Rule turn to rust?

Every day of our lives we are faced with a choice. From the moment we open our eyes in the morning, we can either choose to have a bitter attitude toward life and circumstances, or we can choose to have a better attitude toward life and circumstances. Is it really that simple? Yes, it is!

If you have tried to do something in your life and it doesn’t happen for you the first time, it’s a great temptation to just throw your hands in the air and give up, right? But what if you tried again – and maybe just tweak one little aspect of your plan. What if that one small change made all the difference between failure and success? There’s a mistaken idea that success just magically happens for people. I’m not sure how that lie got spread around, but it is not true. Success is a string of failures! Too many people just give up on their dream too soon. It’s sad because they will never realize their full potential – and the world may have missed out on something truly wonderful!

The choice to be better no matter what circumstances you find yourself in, really speaks to an individual’s integrity, character and moral fiber to a great extent. If a person tends to be more positive, they are more likely to hang in there and succeed. If a person has a negative outlook about life in general, they will more than likely give up when they come to the first bump in the road. A good attitude in life leads to positive actions – and positive results.  Pray for a good Samaritan to come along to lend a helping hand.

That’s a great skit! That poor girl just wanted to be useful but kept stepping on someone else’s toes. I’ve been there in church, haven’t you?  Sad but true.

Most people visiting a church are walking away from a bad situation. They either feel unwanted, unappreciated, over-worked or they felt invisible in their former church. It’s not the congregation’s job to figure out which group the visitor falls in.

Sometimes it’s difficult for a visitor to find their “niche'” in the body of Christ. I don’t mean to sound ugly, but it’s like nobody really wants to make room for anyone else to use their talents. Then there are times when you walk in the door and you are handed an entire LIST of jobs that nobody wants to do – so they really hope that you will take one of those jobs – or all of them.

The church really needs to be careful about how it approaches visitors. Everyone is different and we don’t want to exclude anyone, but we don’t want to bombard them with responsibilities either.  Wink!   😉
