I'M GOD'S SOMEBODY

If God is for us, who can be against us?  – Romans 8:31 (b)

Do you need a shot of encouragement today?  This is one of those verses that acts just like a dose of pure adrenaline!  Just focus on that one short verse for a minute or two.  The God of the universe is for you!!!  He is on your side as you navigate the twists and turns of this journey called life.  If that doesn’t make you feel fantastic, I don’t know what would.

As much as I love the familiar verse Romans 8:28, I especially appreciate the Scripture that follows it – as it reads in The Message:

So, what do you think? With God on our side like this, how can we lose? If God didn’t hesitate to put everything on the line for us, embracing our condition and exposing himself to the worst by sending his own Son, is there anything else he wouldn’t gladly and freely do for us? And who would dare tangle with God by messing with one of God’s chosen? Who would dare even to point a finger? The One who died for us—who was raised to life for us!—is in the presence of God at this very moment sticking up for us. Do you think anyone is going to be able to drive a wedge between us and Christ’s love for us? There is no way! Not trouble, not hard times, not hatred, not hunger, not homelessness, not bullying threats, not backstabbing, not even the worst sins listed in Scripture:

They kill us in cold blood because they hate you.
We’re sitting ducks; they pick us off one by one.

None of this fazes us because Jesus loves us. I’m absolutely convinced that nothing—nothing living or dead, angelic or demonic, today or tomorrow, high or low, thinkable or unthinkable—absolutely nothing can get between us and God’s love because of the way that Jesus our Master has embraced us.  – Romans 8:31-39

There is one word that comes to mind when I read this – and re-read it.  COMFORT.  This is a hug from God Himself.  You can say what you want about comfort foods…  but I’ll take my comfort Scripture over your comfort foods any day and twice on Sunday!  You should feel fantastic today, Christian, because God is for you!  🙂

When you think of the grace of God, how do you respond?  Do you sing?  Pray?  Praise?  Smile?  All of the above?  God’s grace is truly…  well – amazing!!! 

WHEN I THINK OF YOUR GRACE

When we perceive our spiritual blessings on a conscious level, it’s okay to take a moment to let God know how grateful we are for those supernatural gifts from Him.  Precious moments make us feel closer to God too, don’t they?  The other day, I was working on something in the living room while my husband was cooking in the kitchen.  I just had to take a moment to thank God for my blessings!

The more we thank God for blessings, the better our lives get.  How about giving your significant other a bear hug?  It’s a tiny act of love, but when you’ve been presented with a fantastic meal or a sweet compliment out of the blue – it’s a good idea to recognize such positive behavior.  We want it to continue, don’t we?  😉

God’s grace is the greatest of all blessings for all of mankind.  If not for His grace, we would be lost – literally.  Eternally lost.  So when we feel a flood of gratitude because of it – it’s a good thing!

Sometimes expressing thanks to God for all He’s done is like popping an anti-anxiety piece of chocolate after a stressful day at work.  It’s really better because the chocolate isn’t going to last, but when we sing, pray, praise and smile because of what God has done for us, it’s a lasting experience.  It seems to make every aspect of life that much better, doesn’t it?

Don’t wait for Thanksgiving to begin thanking God for His grace, mercy and love.  No one will ever love you like He does!  Count your blessings – big and small.  God has given us so much to be thankful for – and it takes more than just one day out of the year to thank Him sufficiently.  🙂

Today we celebrate an annual event started by Kevin Zaborney called NATIONAL HUGGING DAY!!!

The first NHD was in 1986 and the idea caught on – to be more open to hugs for family and friends.  Zaborney chose this date because he thought everyone could use hugs since the festive season of Christmas and New Year’s Day is behind us, and the next holiday would not be until February 14th, Valentine’s Day.  Between that and the usual winter blues, this seemed like a good day to choose.

He’s right because in a study by the Touch Research Institute at the University of Miami Medical School, they discovered that American couples spend only 1/3 of the time touching that French couples spend.  Ah…  ooh la la…  ya gotta love the French!  Oui!

Hugs are also beneficial for psychological and physical development.  When we high-five our kids for a job well done, it wouldn’t hurt to add a little hug.

What else do hugs do for us?

  • Lower blood pressure
  • Lower heart rate
  • Holding hands with a romantic partner for just 10 minutes reduces stress levels significantly
  • Couples that hug for 20 seconds have higher levels of oxytocin
  • Decreases levels of the stress hormone cortisol in women
  • Decreases risk of heart disease in both men and women
  • Builds a healthy immune system

Who would have guessed that a little hug could do all that good?

One word of caution about this day – some people really have a problem with hugs for whatever reason.  Maybe they were abused or have some other issue with it, but ALWAYS ask someone before you just start hugging them.  Many people are perfectly fine about receiving a hug, but there are some people who are quite uncomfortable with them.

No judgments.  God understands.  We just pray that they receive patience and understanding from their circle of friends. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

PLUSH ANIMAL LOVER’S DAY

10-28 HUGS FOR SISSY

Today is PLUSH ANIMAL LOVER’S DAY!!!  This comes at a particularly appropriate time of year in my opinion.  As I drive around my neighborhood there are scads of pumpkins and hay bales, but there are also a few very scary decorations at some houses.  Also, as I look at world events, it’s easy to say “I want my plush animal” – oh come on, you know you think it sometimes too.

Do you remember your first plush animal?  My granny LaVella gave me a big bear that was taller than me!  His name was Higgins and he went everywhere with me.  With Higgins by my side I could do anything!  I’m sure he was a store-bought bear, but I know Granny made stuffed animals for some of my cousins.  Take a look at this girl’s collection of Build-a-Bear plush bears.

Wow!  You know, I was under the impression that those are not exactly inexpensive to make either.  That collection is quite impressive.  Some people make their own plush animals.

I wish I could do that (and quilt), but let’s face it, I’m just not the seamstress I want to be.

I enjoy and appreciate innocence.  Part of that is watching children or animals with their plush animal toys.  I love Operation Christmas Child so this video just warmed my heart.  It is amazing what the little items in those shoe boxes can achieve – look at those little girls smile!  😀

And here’s a video that gets 5 stars on my AWE meter…  it’s so cute when the stuffed animal looks like the real one!  LOL!!!

I’m not sure what it is about our plush animals (or the real ones for that matter) that make us feel so much more safe and secure, but today is the day to hug them even more than usual.  I’m sure more than one article has been written on the subject and featured in Psychology Today magazine.  While I’m sure it is a false sense of security, you have my permission to take your teddy bear to bed with you tonight too if you want – wink!  😉
