SHOP SMALL SATURDAY

images-3I’m the first to admit that I spend a lot of time and money at the big box stores like Walmart and Sam’s Club.  It’s convenient and I know what I need will be there for a reasonable price.  But today is going to be different because I’m going to check out some of the small businesses in my own back yard!  I’m excited because many of these stores are filled with unique items that I’d never find at a big box store!

When you’re Christmas shopping, it’s nice to find one of a kind gifts.  There’s nothing like walking into your Walmart after Christmas and seeing a whole rack of the same sweater you got…  am I right?  Maybe it’s a girl thing – but I think guys like to get unique items too.

It’s not easy to maintain a small business, and if we don’t want them to disappear, we need to do our part to frequent and support them.  Today I’m going to share some of my favorites and spark some interest hopefully in shopping at small businesses.

chellees-pieVisit my friend Chellee’s restaurant in Marion, Kansas!  It’s called Aunt Mae’s (named after her mama).  I’m so very proud of her because I know it’s something she has worked hard to accomplish.  Y’all let her know I told ya to come see her, okay?  And save room for some of that delicious cherry pie!  Stay on main street and you can’t miss her place – it’s the cute little white place with a spacious parking lot.  Enjoy!images-218

imagesbk2p4f0zSome folks are not into antique shopping like I am…  but there are some amazing antique stores in my area!  I could never pay retail prices for Longaberger baskets, but sometimes I can find some good deals in antique stores and flea markets.

The Flying Moose Antique Mall here in Wichita is having some good sales on their stuff through Christmas.  I may see if they have a Longaberger acorn basket – I’m determined to find one for a reasonable price!  I’m patient…  the right one will come along.  😉  I have a few Christmas gifts to shop for as well.  That may be a destination for me today!

And Wichitans should also think about supporting the small businesses in Old Town!  Sometimes they have pretty good sales and you’ll find unique items that those big stores don’t carry.

Here are the kinds of shops that I like to go in and browse – and by browse, I mean not be rushed through.  LOL!

I like handmade stuff – soaps and such.  I like little boutique shops tucked away…  my heart beats a bit faster when I spot one of these out of the way places!soap-1209344__340

I also like the flower shops that are also antique stores – have you seen any of those?  What an unusual combination, but it works!

There are literally hundreds of small businesses in communities all over the country.  These are just a few of the possibilities!  Don’t forget to click on these links not only for Shop Small Saturday – but on Cyber Monday also!

On Saturday the 26th of November, plan to shop small.  Bring along a bestie to help you carry your haul.  – seen on facebook today.

buy-1299519__340If you do take a bestie along to help carry your haul…  make sure you buy them a coffee!  I mean, seriously – that would be nice, don’t you think?  When you go to get it, think small…  remember, today is all about supporting the small businesses!  I would go along with a friend and carry bags for a good cup of coffee and girl talk and all that…  jus’ sayin’…  😉

This special emphasis on small business has taken place the Saturday after Thanksgiving since 2010, and the impact has been felt by small business owners everywhere.  It’s not easy to start a business these days, so everything we can do to support small business owners is greatly appreciated.  🙂

HIGH FIVE DAY

TL 4-21 HIGH FIVE DAYIt’s thought that the HIGH FIVE started in professional sports.  It’s a way to celebrate a great moment or an accomplishment.  It’s like saying WAY TO GO to a team mate for a job well done.  High five the ones you love today, because they may not be around to celebrate with tomorrow – jus’ sayin’…

I’d give anything to high five my parents today.  They were married on this day in 1943.  Marriage is tough under the best of circumstances – and they stayed together and took their vows seriously.  Now they’re together in eternity.  I wish them an eternity of happiness and joy in the hereafter – and give them an air five today!

If you don’t have humans in your realm of influence, you can most certainly high five the cat!

Get a high five from the kiddo out on the playground!

girl-586988_1280And you probably won’t run into this guy today – you have to wait until Christmas, ‘cuz he’s back at the North Pole trying to get rested up…  but if you could find Santa – you might get to high five him!

santa-claus-579113_1920I just think that is TOO CUTE!  🙂

Who will you high five today?  What moments will you celebrate?  I’ll celebrate an exercise session when it’s over.  I’ll celebrate a pound lost – or even a half or quarter pound lost – as long as I lose and not gain.  It’s great to be going in the right direction!

A COMMENTARY FROM THE HEART

TL A COMMENTARY FROM THE HEART (29)AWell, we are nearly a month into winter and it’s not been too bad yet here in Kansas.  We’ve had a couple of earthquakes, but not much snow so far.  Every day that we have mild temperatures and no snow, I thank God because I’m not a big fan of ice and snow – at all.

LEFTOVER SNOW

But what’s Coyote John up to???  Looks like he’s LOST IN THE WIND!  That’s not difficult in Kansas – trust me!  😉

I enjoy watching videos on YouTube that my friend John makes.  He shows us the outdoors like nobody else does!  Most of us drive along the highway, passing by all that Mother Nature has to show us.  Let’s watch his most recent video recorded last December.

GOD'S THEREBetween RA, sciatica and type 2 diabetes, there are days when I can barely function.  I wonder if people like John know how much it helps to be able to watch their YouTube videos?  It’s the next best thing to getting out for a walk myself!

POEM FROM THE PRAIRIE LADY

Look at the trees, look at the birds, look at the clouds, look at the stars… and if you have eyes you will be able to see that the whole existence is joyful. Everything is simply happy. Trees are happy for no reason; they are not going to become prime ministers or presidents and they are not going to become rich and they will never have any bank balance. Look at the flowers — for no reason. It is simply unbelievable how happy flowers are.  – Osho

A great big THANK YOU to John for showing us nature in winter – while we sit indoors all snug and warm.  😉

A COMMENTARY FROM THE HEART

TL A COMMENTARY FROM THE HEART (23)

The very fact that we humans have a sense of humor indicates that God does, too, for we are made in His image.   You can’t look at penguins, platypuses, and puppies without thinking that God has a sense of humor!  Jesus, as the Son of God, shares the Father’s attributes, including a sense of humor.

As the Son of Man, Jesus shares in the full human experience. We cannot imagine life without laughter; even those in dire circumstances have known seasons of joy. Everyone laughs and appreciates good humor. To say that Jesus never expressed joy through laughter is akin to denying His full humanity.

Yes, I watched the Republican debate and there were certainly some funny moments, but when it’s all said and done I have to say…

NO MATTER WHO IS PRESIDENT, JESUS IS KING!

We have to learn to laugh, and for me this video did the trick!  I really dig that little Donald Trump, don’t you?  Love the rug!  The wee little Rand Paul is too cute as well.

You know, there was a time not so long ago when the ideologies of Democrats and Republicans were minimal.  They seem to be polar opposites these days.  That’s why I believe so strongly that conservative Christians need to wake up and pay attention to what’s going on.

For years I’ve heard friends and family say there’s nothing we can do about it, so why pay attention?  Well – maybe a few years ago we could have taken that attitude, but now…  I don’t know.  It seems to me we need to follow current events closer now.  And if you wonder what you can do…  as a voter – you can pray before the election – then vote your conscience.

The “real” debate (with the so-called grown-ups) was entertaining at times, but I just had to share the kid’s version because it’s just so darn cute!

Life gets heavy and weighs us down.  When we can find a reason to smile and laugh, why not share it?  I don’t believe God expects us to be less than joyful because we know that He has always seen us through – and will continue to lead us going forward.  We have nothing to fear because He is in control.  🙂

NATIONAL THRIFT SHOP DAY

TL 8-17 NATIONAL THRIFT SHOP DAY

Today is NATIONAL THRIFT SHOP DAY!!!  A thrift shop (also known as a thrift store, charity shop, hospice shop or resale shop) is a retail establishment run by a charitable organization to raise money to be used in accord with the organization’s stated charitable purpose.

A great cup of coffee begins with a great cup

Here in Wichita, we have quite a few thrift shops and I definitely have a few favorites.  About a month ago we lost our large Salvation Army Thrift Store, which made me sad.  They used to have a really great deal on Thursdays.  You could get a bag full of clothes (and I packed mine tight) for $5.

Polka dots are timeless fashion

If you have kids going back to school, check your local thrift stores today for special deals.  Yes, there are some old styles on the racks, but if you are handy with a needle and thread, you can update those clothes to update and customize them.  Follow this hashtag for great bargains!  #ThriftShopDay

I’m ready for a night out

I like vintage clothing!  There are some cute outfits and unexpected finds in thrift stores.  They don’t always have women’s petite sizes, but once in a while I find just the right size and style.

Nice coats – I see a few yellow ones

I’m starting to see some of the old styles coming back.  I’ve seen young girls in jumpers like we used to wear in the 1980’s.  I think they are so cute!  Every girl and woman needs to have one little black dress.  Where did I get mine?  Three guesses…  lol.

Pretty and flattering with a splash of green

Most thrift stores have more than clothing these days.  Ours have furniture, home décor items, accessories, shoes and even used books.  Now you can own a book for a reasonable price instead of checking it out of the library.

It’s fun to shop at the thrift shop because you see items that bring back memories.  You may find some rare antiques – and pay a lot less for them!

This reminds me of my Granny LaVella

Are you in the mood to shop yet???

Here are a few common sense rules for thrift shop shopping:

  1. Take the price of gasoline into consideration when choosing which stores to visit.  If you have to drive too far, it will defeat the purpose of saving money.
  2. Check the merchandise carefully for flaws.  Remember you are buying second-hand stuff, so it could possibly have some defects.
  3. If the store does not allow you to try clothing on, turn around and walk out!  Some of the stores in our city do not let you try clothing on because they’ve had problems with theft.  I don’t purchase clothing until I’ve tried it on.
  4. If you have a large tote bag, it’s probably a good idea to take it to the thrift shop with you because they don’t always provide bags.
  5. Wear comfortable clothing and shoes today because you will probably be shopping till you drop!

The most important thing to do is have fun!  Saving money should be a happy experience.  🙂

A COMMENTARY FROM THE HEART

TL A COMMENTARY FROM THE HEART (30)

When you think of the grace of God, how do you respond?  Do you sing?  Pray?  Praise?  Smile?  All of the above?  God’s grace is truly…  well – amazing!!!

WHEN I THINK OF YOUR GRACE

When we perceive our spiritual blessings on a conscious level, it’s okay to take a moment to let God know how grateful we are for those supernatural gifts from Him.  Precious moments make us feel closer to God too, don’t they?  The other day, I was working on something in the living room while my husband was cooking in the kitchen.  I just had to take a moment to thank God for my blessings!

The more we thank God for blessings, the better our lives get.  How about giving your significant other a bear hug?  It’s a tiny act of love, but when you’ve been presented with a fantastic meal or a sweet compliment out of the blue – it’s a good idea to recognize such positive behavior.  We want it to continue, don’t we?  😉

God’s grace is the greatest of all blessings for all of mankind.  If not for His grace, we would be lost – literally.  Eternally lost.  So when we feel a flood of gratitude because of it – it’s a good thing!

Sometimes expressing thanks to God for all He’s done is like popping an anti-anxiety piece of chocolate after a stressful day at work.  It’s really better because the chocolate isn’t going to last, but when we sing, pray, praise and smile because of what God has done for us, it’s a lasting experience.  It seems to make every aspect of life that much better, doesn’t it?

Don’t wait for Thanksgiving to begin thanking God for His grace, mercy and love.  No one will ever love you like He does!  Count your blessings – big and small.  God has given us so much to be thankful for – and it takes more than just one day out of the year to thank Him sufficiently.  🙂

TL A COMMENTARY FROM THE HEART (18)

I THANK GOD FOR YOU TODAY

We’re celebrating another day of life today – how do we celebrate?  I’m so glad you asked!  We celebrate in various ways, including taking as good of care of ourselves for each other as we can.  I think I’ve read every self-help book ever written.

Today I want to share some information I’ve gleaned through the years.

  1. Have the nurse at your doctor’s office check both arms when they take your blood pressure.  Why?   Just 15 points or more between the systolic blood pressure readings in your left and right arms could signal heart disease.
  2. Fit a gentle jog or brisk walk into your day.  It could add about 5 years to your longevity.  Just 30 minutes a day will do the trick.
  3. Crossword puzzles are not a waste of time.  When you stimulate your brain with games or puzzles, you keep serious disease like Alzheimer’s at bay.
  4. If you do a lot of typing or texting (and who doesn’t these days?), make sure to stretch your wrists to avoid carpal tunnel syndrome.  How?  Rest your palm on your thigh with wrist and knuckles straight.  Completely bend your first-finger joints (which is difficult if those muscles are tight).  With your fingertips tucked under and your nails touching your leg, apply pressure over the knuckles with your other hand.  Hold for seven seconds and repeat 10 times.
  5. Take a deep breath and think of a blessing.  It will give you an instant lift spiritually and make you feel better about yourself.  I’m not crazy – try it!  It works!
  6. Say a prayer for someone who has wronged you.  You absolutely cannot continue to rent out a part of your mind to someone who has wronged you.  Pray for them and kick them out of your brain.  You’ll feel lighter and happier – and they have been prayed for.

Your well-being and happiness are important, especially to your family members.  If you are angry, stressed and uptight, that’s not fair to them.  Give them a great gift – take care of yourself!  🙂
