A COMMENTARY FROM THE HEART

I look forward to spring for so many reasons, but I think my favorite one is that we will start grilling hamburgers outdoors!  I don’t mind turning the stove on when it’s cold outside because it heats up the kitchen; however, in the spring and summer I’d rather not cook indoors because, well, it heats up the kitchen.

How many hamburgers do you eat at one time?  There’s no right or wrong answer – it’s not a trick question.  The calorie police are all at the donut shop – so don’t weigh your answer.  Be honest – do you have one hamburger, or maybe a few?  What is your portion of ground beef on a bun?

I’m a career dieter…  that is, I’ve been on one meal plan or the other since I was about five years old.  I was the poster child to represent the one who could not climb the rope in P.E. class.  I’ve learned lessons through the years – the primary one being – you must use portion control when you eat anything – no matter what diet you follow.

When it comes to spiritual portions…  there’s never too much of God’s Spirit!  I’ll tell you, if I eat too many hamburgers (or anything, for that matter), it will show up fairly quickly.  When I depend on God to be my portion – every moment of every day…  it shows up also, but in a positive way!  He is so faithful to me, and I depend on His love and kindness to renew my soul – over and over again.

It’s taken a lifetime, but I’ve learned to rely less on the portion control in a diet, and more on the PORTION that is the Holy Spirit of God.  I’m not as quick to pick up a cupcake to deal with stress like I used to.  I choose to take a deep breath and seek God when I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed.  It’s His will for my life – and it’s a healthy and good way to deal with stress.  The Lord is my portion…  and there are no calories or carbohydrates to count.  🙂

TL A COMMENTARY FROM THE HEART (2)PUNCTUALITYIf you are to meet others and end up being the last to show up, does it make you feel bad for being late?  It seems like I am always the last one to arrive.  I don’t do it intentionally, but that’s neither here nor there.  It is a problem that I need to work on, and with God’s help I can do better.

I never want anyone to feel like they are not important to me.  If I leave people waiting, it’s possible that they may feel like their company is not as important to me as something else.  That is certainly not the case.  I just have a problem with time management.  Here are some things I’m going to do to make my routine as smooth as silk as I’m getting ready to leave the house:

  • I will lay all my clothing out the night before.  That way I can change purses if I need to and make decisions about what jewelry to wear.
  • It takes time to find the right lipstick to wear with the clothes you are wearing.  I’m going to start picking out make-up the night before.
  • Getting between 6-8 hours of sleep the night before makes all the difference.  If I’m suffering with symptoms of RA, I keep a PM medication on hand.
  • If I have to meet people early in the day, I’ll start taking a shower the night before.  That will shave a little time off my routine.
  • I will start leaving phone numbers by the phone.  If I realize that I won’t be there on time, having the number to call handy right away means I won’t have to spend several minutes trying to look the phone number up.

Respecting others and their time are a priority for me in 2016.  With God’s help and guidance, I can be a better friend, associate and patron.  🙂

THROUGH LIFE
I like to read the accounts of “ON THIS DAY”, especially on Throwback Thursday. I have a couple of groups on facebook and need conversation starters. There are some interesting facts to be found. For instance, did you know that on this day in 1888, Thomas Edison’s phonograph was introduced in London, England? An audio recording of English composer Arthur Sullivan’s “The Lost Chord” was played on it. That title cracks me up. I’ve played LOST CHORDS for years – what’s your point?

On August 14, 1965 The Beatles taped an appearance for the Ed Sullivan Show.

On the same day, Sonny & Cher’s “I Got You Babe” hit #1 on the charts.

Remember THE SONNY & CHER COMEDY HOUR? I never missed that show – and they always sang I GOT YOU BABE at the end of their show.

On August 14th, 1873, “Field and Stream” began publishing. There were three things my dad always had available to read. His Bible, Mechanics Illustrated and Field and Stream. There was usually one of those magazines in the bathroom, also known as my dad’s library. That is all.

So many people just jump into life! They jump in and get messy and do what they do best and are successful. Some of us just sit on the sidelines and watch and cheer at the successes and cry when the legacy comes to a tragic end.

I don’t think God necessarily wants us to do something without counting the cost and certainly not without talking with Him about it first; however, we are not to just sit on the sidelines and be afraid to try. God gives us everything we need to succeed. He didn’t promise that we’d be rich or famous like these folks we talked about today. He promises to be there with us and go THROUGH life with us. 😉

A PRAYER, A WISH, A BLESSING

You know how I love marriage proposals!!!  Awe…

What is peace and how do we achieve it? In our own country alone, it seems we are more divided now than ever before in U.S. history. We seem divided by not only class and religion, but we seem to be revisiting the civil rights issues of the 1960’s. I am a child of the 1960’s and I remember the racial tensions and I was actually a victim of several beatings in my high school during race riots. It left some scars, but these things just take time and prayer. God can and has helped me.

So many divisions – yet we say SHALOM to one another. We say, PEACE ON EARTH, GOOD WILL TOWARD MEN. How dare we? This is not peace. Will it ever be? If so, how? God only knows. Ah… that is the key – GOD knows. I do not know how this thing called “life” on planet earth will play out. This I do know: with the Holy Spirit in my heart, He gives me a PEACE that passes all human understanding. It is my job to love everyone – no matter what. And if I get hurt in any way, it’s my job to forgive quickly and pray for the one(s) who hurt me. Then God can help me heal.

It’s my job to read God’s Word, the Holy Bible. I need to take in what it says and apply it to my life. It’s God’s job to guide me along that narrow path that keeps me safe from the ugliness this world has to offer. I just pray and read my Bible. It’s such a simple recipe for a life filled with God’s peace. It’s there for the asking. Ask God for His peace – not as the world gives – but His peace will be beyond anything this world understands.
