BRING YOUR MANNERS TO WORK DAY

9-2 BRING YOUR MANNERS TO WORK DAY

We learned so much from Ernestine, didn’t we?  She taught us how to behave in the workplace…  be tough, but use humor at the most crucial time (when you actually want to beat the tar out of someone).   She taught us that we need to wake up, get up, dress up (making certain you have earrings and a matching bracelet), and show up to work on time!   We also learned that it’s okay to snort on occasion during a conversation and laugh at the appropriate time.  Thank you, Ernestine!

When Ernestine’s job phased out, they introduced her to a computer and put her in a cubicle with enough room to turn your chair exactly one half turn in two directions, but not enough room to stretch your legs out in front of you.  She no longer worked for the telephone company, but for a health insurance company.  The building was in downtown Wichita, Kansas and she worked on the 6th floor.

Wait…  that’s not Ernestine – that’s me.  Okay – we’re talking about me and my job.

How do we take our manners to work with us?  I’m so glad you asked.  I happen to have made a list.  I made this list a few years ago, long before I retired.  I’ve been waiting for the perfect time to share it – and it seems the opportunity has present itself, so…  here it is.

  1.  Whether you got up on the right side of the bed or not is unimportant…  you must begin by looking at yourself in the mirror and practicing your smile.  Good manners in the workplace begin with a good attitude, and a good attitude depends on your view of yourself.  It’s true!  If you like you, then it follows that others will like you too!  I’m not advocating the self-love, can’t get enough of myself junk that hit songs are made of these days – NO.  I’m just saying a healthy self-esteem is a step in the right direction, that’s all.
  2. Pray about the coming day.  I hear you saying, “I don’t have time for devotions in the morning – I have to get to work!”  Did I say anything about having actual devotions in the morning?  If you happen to be a disciplined person who gets up and hour earlier to accommodate that into your routine, then good for you.  For the rest of us…  pray while you’re in the shower – God hears you there too, you know!  By the same token, if you get up early enough to take a jog or a run or a skip around the neighborhood – you are disciplined enough to take care of your physical body…  doesn’t your spiritual self deserve some time too?  Jus’ sayin’…
  3. Be geared up to have a great day, but be prepared for worst case scenario.  Don’t let anything blind side you.  Remember who you are and that regardless of what happens, God loves you.  People do not always love you, but that’s not in their job description.  Let’s face it, we don’t pick our family and we don’t pick our co-workers.  These are just people who need to make money.  That’s the only reason they are there – just like you.  Don’t expect to make friends.  If you do make friends, that’s a bonus!
  4. I had a pet peeve about elevator etiquette.  If you think about this rationally, it makes sense.  When you get to work and need to get in the elevator to get to the 6th floor, it’s okay to push the button and stand there – that’s fine.  But don’t stand right next to the doors of the elevator!  If there are folks inside the elevator who want to come down to the 1st floor, they will need to have some space – give them room to exit the elevator before you get on!  For Pete’s sake, don’t just charge into the elevator right after the doors open!  It made me cray cray when someone would do that and I’d be trying to exit with some degree of decorum and integrity intact.
  5. Don’t talk about anybody ever…  gossip is not pretty in a family, in a church, or in a workplace.  It’s dangerous territory – do your best to rise above the temptation.  It is tempting because some people can make you nuts, but keep that information to yourself.  A better idea is to just pray for the ones who grate on your nerves.  Funny thing, but once you start to pray for them, you don’t dislike them so much and sometimes you begin to understand them better.
  6. It’s perfectly fine to speak cordially to co-workers, but to stand around and chit-chat and laugh and carry on is rude and annoying to others.  It’s distracting when some are trying to think about – you know, work.
  7. Be available at break time or at lunch for co-workers.  Some ministry doors have been opened to me at work.  It’s amazing how much you can share with a co-worker about your faith over a Wendy’s burger.
  8. Did you know that when you’re talking on the phone with a person, when you smile, they can HEAR that you’re smiling?  It’s weird, but it’s true.  Genuine courtesy is refreshing.  We’ve all met people who seem fake and robotic where courtesy is concerned.  Work on making common courtesy a part of who you are as a person.  With a little preparation and thoughtfulness, you can be a person with genuine courtesy.  It’s still better to give than to receive and to think of others before yourself.

So like Ernestine, we can go to work all scrubbed up and spiffed up, with our smile, sense of humor and manners on board.  Have a GREAT day!  🙂

A WAY FOR THE POSSIBLE

This is just a reminder that things are not always what they seem to be.  It’s meant to be a pepper-upper for ones who may feel discouraged.  Some things are enhanced, others are hidden.  Some facts come to light literally years after the person is dead and gone.  The take-away here is that no matter what things look like on the surface, they are never that simple.  People do what they do for a reason.  People say what they say for a reason and last but not least, people believe the way they believe for a reason.

How would these people’s lives and careers have been different if they had not experienced these events or wanted to change their look or ventured out in some way to try something new?  If you thought that celebrities somehow get to walk on easy street from day one – think again!  Some of these people overcame some major obstacles before they got their big break:

  • James Earl Jones had a severe stutter as a child and was silent for nearly eight years.  Aren’t we thankful he got over it?  He has one of the most distinguished and iconic voices in the world.
  • When Stephen King was 2 years old, his father went out to “buy a pack of cigarettes” and never came back.  This has influenced him tremendously.
  • Elvis Presley was a natural blonde.  The familiar black hair was dye he used from the time he got into high school.  He wanted his hair to look like the truck driver’s hair – and most of them had dark, slicked back hair.
  • Vangelis, a pioneer in electronic music, performed soundtracks for movies and won an Academy Award for the score in “Chariots of Fire”.  He can’t read music.
  • Mel Blanc, the voice of Looney Tune characters, got into a near-fatal car crash in 1961 that resulted in 3 skull fractures and a 3-week long coma.  His doctor could not get a response, so asked, “Bugs, can you hear me?”  Blanc, in the voice of Bugs Bunny, responded, “What’s Up, Doc?”
  • At 35 years of age, Harrison Ford was fitting a door for Francis Ford Coppola when a studio executive, testing actresses for a new film, asked him to help out by reading the lines written for the male lead.  The film was “Star Wars”.

It’s also a reminder – God really does have a great plan for your life.  Now, it doesn’t mean that you will be a movie star or become famous at all, but remember that you will always be God’s STAR because you belong to Him!  Wink!  😉

HIS EYES

All I ever wanted since I arrived here on earth was the same things I needed as a baby; to go from cold to warm, lonely to held, the vessel to the giver, empty to full.  – Anne Lamott

If you could trade places with one person for one year, who would it be?  Maybe it would be your best friend because in your mind he / she has a better life.  Maybe it’s someone you admire and aspire to be like.  It could be someone famous who has seemingly succeeded in life.  Maybe it’s someone in your family, or your spouse.  If I could be my spouse for a year, I’d have a new appreciation for him – having to live with the likes of me.  LOL!

Do blondes have more fun?  Maybe you’d like to be a blonde for a year and find out.  Are brunettes taken more seriously and rise up the corporate ladder more quickly?  Be a brunette for a year and find out.  Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be autistic or dyslexic?  Be someone who has those challenges for a year.  As a dyslexic, let me tell you, a year is plenty of time to realize the frustrations.

Are you a boss with employees?  Maybe you’d like to be one of your employees to see just how good a boss you are.  Maybe as an employee, you’d like to be the boss for a year and find out how tough it is to be in charge.

PRAYER ABOUT USING GIFTS

Would you like to be someone rich and have money to help those in need?  Would you like to be one in need so that you appreciate little things after the year is over?  Would you like to be a great evangelist like Billy Graham?

We all have people we look up to and want to pattern our lives after.  I used to wish I could be a better musician.  I didn’t have a particular person in mind, but I knew I wanted to play the piano better than I did.

The stupidest argument to have with somebody is when you tell them what to like.  How can somebody argue with you about what you like?  “Hot sauce?”  Hey, it’s my mouth.  – Andre’ Benjamin

There are very few people who have not wished that they could be someone else at one time or the other.  We are all unique individuals with gifts and talents from our Creator.  Bottom line:  I don’t like hot sauce, but I have absolutely no problem with you eating it for breakfast, lunch and dinner if you want to.

God loves you because you are YOU!

When we get to the point where we like being who we are and accept others for who they are, we begin to find that happy place on the planet.  We snuggle in and start to get comfortable in our own skin and in our own mind.  God loves you because you are – you!  😀

One of the first concepts I learned from God’s Holy Word, the Bible, was the fact that God takes care of the birds, specifically, the sparrows. Sparrows are not exotic birds and in fact, in Kansas, they are easily overlooked because they are so common.

I believe that’s why the Lord called our sparrow friend by name. Sparrows are not very pretty, as birds go, and they can make a mess if a lot of them are hanging around (I know this because I often have to take my car to the car wash to get all the poop removed sufficiently).

So one might go so far to say that sparrows are a nuisance. They are not even almost a nuisance to God. God cares for the little sparrow. One of my favorite songs is “His Eye Is On The Sparrow”. It brings a great comfort to my spirit, knowing that He cares so much for this little bird. How much more He must care for us!

Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. – Matthew 6:25-34

I’m not sure why that silly sparrow keeps flying into our back picture window, but I hope it figures out it’s not going to get inside. I hope God directs the poor thing to a tree somewhere. It makes me hurt every time I hear it hit the glass! Poor thing!   😦

RARE DISEASES DAY

TL 2-28 RARE DISEASES DAY

There are special people in this world who are afflicted with rare diseases.  Today we observe RARE DISEASES DAY!!!  It’s so frustrating to have an invisible disease, especially when it is misunderstood by most people.

The family is one of nature’s masterpieces.  – George Santayana, The Life of Reason

The focus this year is to join for better care.  Caring for people living with a rare disease is multi-faceted.  Some patients have access to treatment, while other have no treatment options.  Some patients are moderately independent while others require intensive physical assistance and equipment.

To understand what is needed for proper patient care is important if we are to help.  We will draw awareness through this post.  Hopefully after you read this, you will not be ignorant about some of the more rare diseases that folks and their families struggle with on a daily basis.

A rare disease is one that affects 1 in 2000.  Over 6,000 rare diseases are characterized by a broad diversity of disorders and symptoms that vary not only from disease to disease but also from patient to patient suffering from the same disease.

Rare diseases

  • May involve chronic illness, disability, and often premature death
  • Often have no treatment or not very effective treatment
  • Are frequently not diagnosed correctly
  • Are often very complex
  • Are often caused by changes in genes

Relatively common symptoms can hide underlying rare diseases leading to misdiagnosis and delaying treatments.  Therein lies the frustration for these patients and their families.

For a database of rare diseases, please click on this link – https://www.rarediseases.org/rare-disease-information/rare-diseases

I have found so much help through the Diabetic Online Community on facebook.  It’s my hope that people dealing with rare diseases might meet up with others facing similar challenges through social media.  There really is strength in numbers.  It helps so much to know you’re not going through a disease process by yourself.  I’m also so thankful for information through reputable websites such as WebMD.  The symptom checker on there can be so helpful in directing a patient to the proper diagnosis, or at least get you started.

For everyone battling an invisible or rare disease, I want you to know God loves you.  He sees what you’re going through and hears every prayer you say.  I’m praying for you too.

NATIONAL CHOCOLATE CHIP DAY

TL 5-15 NATIONAL CHOCOLATE CHIP DAY

I like to think of chocolate chips as tiny little pieces of sanity.
– Linda Palmer

There are two ways to eat chocolate.  You can either throw caution to the wind and eat an entire chocolate cake, or have a short stack of chocolate chip pancakes.

Today is NATIONAL CHOCOLATE CHIP DAY!!!  Allow me to be your voice of reason for just one minute.  By the time you eat just half of that cake you will no longer be hungry – for anything.  You will probably be feeling pretty sick.

Something as innocent looking as say, a frosted chocolate fudge Pop-Tart is a whopping 200 calories!  Two bites and it’s gone – straight to your hips!!!

I would suggest something that is just as yummy and has just a bit of chocolate, such as Van’s Natural Foods Mini Chocolate Chip Waffles which are only 15 calories each.

Think of it this way…  for one Pop-Tart, you could have 13 mini-waffles!!!  I don’t even add butter or syrup to them, they are that good.  They give me some much-needed chocolate therapy and restore my sanity.

Forget love – I’d rather fall in chocolate!   – Attributed to Sandra J. Dykes

Once in a while, I melt a few chocolate chips in a saucepan and drizzle it over my Quaker chocolate crunch rice cake, which is only 60 calories.  Yes the melted chocolate adds a few more calories, but it sure tastes better than a dry rice cake.  In fact, there are times when I just eat the melted chocolate without the rice cake.  :-/

My friend Lucinda Berry Hill wrote a poem for this day too. We can never have too many poems about chocolate chips – and I like that hers is called CHOCOLATE CHIP FRIENDS.

CHOCOLATE CHIP FRIENDS

Remember that you do have friends and they are more precious than chocolate chips!  God loves you more than chocolate chips too.  He guides and directs your paths if you ask Him to – and your photo is on His refrigerator because you mean so much to Him.

Enjoy your celebration!
