Pray without ceasing – Ye are dependent on God for every good; without him ye can do nothing; feel that dependence at all times, and ye will always be in the spirit of prayer; and those who feel this spirit will, as frequently as possible, be found in the exercise of prayer.  – 1 Thessalonians 5:17

1 I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help.

My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth.

He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber.

Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.

The Lord is thy keeper: the Lord is thy shade upon thy right hand.

The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night.

The Lord shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul.

The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.

– Psalm 121 1-8

Pray without ceasing.  Don’t let the enemy of your soul talk you into the notion that God doesn’t care or doesn’t want to be bothered with the “small stuff” (none of it is small to God).  Tell Him about everything and don’t forget to thank Him for all the answers He gives to your prayers.  🙂

PREPARE YE THE WAY OF THE LORD

TL 12-1 PREPARE YE THE WAY OF THE LORDHow are your preparations going?  We’re not finished yet!  Today, let’s do something to serve the ones in our home.  I hear you saying you do that every day – lol!  You may feel as though you serve those in your own household every day, but I want to invite you to take a look at the chores assigned to each member of your family.

Who usually feeds the pets?  Who usually gathers the garbage to go out to the curb every week?  Who is the one that cleans the toilets?  Ugh…  lovely chore there!

Today I want you to do a chore that you don’t usually do – just take over and do it – no pomp or circumstance – and no announcement.  Just do it.  When you are asked WHY you did it – then you can let your family member know how much you appreciate them – and their faithfulness in doing that chore on a regular basis.  In my family, that would be followed by “Don’t expect it all the time, but…”

Do we tend to take our family members for granted?  Well of course we do!  When the trash gets taken out to the curb – it just magically takes itself out, right?  Stuff just happens – we each have our chores and that’s how life works smoothly.  This is just a little exercise to let your family members know they are appreciated.

As we take in the life and light of our Lord, may it shine forth in our attitudes and actions toward others, but especially in our own homes…  that’s where our mission should always begin – inside the walls of our own residence.

WRAPPED GIFTSGOD WITH US…  EMMANUEL.  He is our gift of hope in these uncertain and divisive days.  He loves every life – every soul is precious to Him – every one of us matter to Him.  We need to show appreciation for one another in our homes to begin with – then others around us – and finally to those who are a little further away – then we need to show the respect and honor to others that we want them to show to us.  Wrap a gift for other people and call it respect.  It sounds so very simple – why is it such a challenge?  :-/

The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.  – Romans 8:16

ABBA DADDY

We hear so much about self-esteem in our world today, don’t we?  Buy this new product and it will make you so beautiful and boost your self-image.  Sound familiar?  Some commercials really hit us where we live, don’t they?  The advertisement that hits me where I live is when Marie Osmond comes on and talks about Nutri-System.  Sometimes it airs so often, I finally say, “Oh Marie, get off my TV!”

We think that if we lose weight or change the color of our hair or paint our toenails it will make us feel better about ourselves.  Those are not bad goals, but they don’t produce a lasting peace or joy within.  These fixes are temporal to say the least.

What brings a lasting peace and joy to our hearts and lives?  I’ll answer for myself.  When God’s Holy Spirit testifies (gives evidence) with my spirit that I am God’s child – it’s amazing!  I call it “God-esteem”!  It’s all about Him and nothing about me.  He did all the giving and praise God, He asks me to receive – and I have.

The Holy Spirit’s voice is a deeper voice than mine.  It’s a still small voice.  Some think it’s like a tornado, fire or earthquake – but no, the voice of God speaks to my heart and my consciousness, telling me that I am His child.

My reply is to cry, Abba…  Daddy!

How do people cope with this crazy life without the Lord?  I don’t understand why anyone would not welcome Him into their hearts and lives.  Imagine having a loving heavenly Father who wants to keep you safe and constantly converse with you Spirit to spirit.  I welcome His Holy Spirit in my life every day.

We have many lovely conversations.  🙂

A COMMENTARY FROM THE HEART

TL A COMMENTARY FROM THE HEART (14)

Today I want to share a praise report with you!  I’m so excited and grateful to God that my Hemoglobin A1c is 6.4!!!  I’m so grateful for His loving kindness and guidance on this journey!

Feeling gratitude and not expressing it is like wrapping a present and not giving it.  – William Arthur Ward

This is an actual surgery using the di Vinci robot.  Using a single port, it’s an outpatient procedure.  I was in surgery at 11am and going home by 3pm.  Amazing!

I think I had such a sick gallbladder for such a long time – it was really messing with me.  Now that it’s gone, the struggle to maintain control of my type 2 diabetes seems to be so much easier!

Since surgery I’ve very easily lost 12 pounds and a few inches from my waist.  It’s not about looks with me – but hey, nice side effect anyway.  The best news was my lab report – I never thought I’d be considered a controlled diabetic!  My blood pressure also went back to normal after surgery.

The surgeon said my gallbladder was red, swollen and angry.  I probably waited too long to get it removed.  I wish I had gone in for surgery sooner.  If I had known then what I know now, I surely would have!

I still have to eat right and exercise every day, but I refuse to look at the long-term – I choose to look at the moment and take it one moment, one food choice, one exercise choice, one hydration choice – at a time.  I want and need to be smarter – and keep asking God for help when temptation comes my way.

The most impressive part of this journey has been the incredible amount of energy I have now!  I feel so much better – it’s hard to explain, but every time I think about how much better I feel – it makes me cry because I was blaming so much on age.

I SEEK YOUR WISDOM

Diabetes will always be with me, but it sure is a great feeling to know it’s finally under control!  I’m not saying that everyone with a high A1c has a malfunctioning gallbladder, but in my case – it seems that was part of the problem.

Who knew?  Wink!  😉

A COMMENTARY FROM THE HEART

COMMENTARY FROM THE HEART 35

PAIN IS MY GIFT

What is a gift?  Most of us think of a gift as something positive and fun – maybe even fashionable!  We give and receive gifts for happy occasions like Christmas, birthdays and anniversaries.  We usually give a gift that reflects a bit of our personality.  Many times I’ve given the gift of an angel figurine because I collect angels and believe so strongly that angels surround each of us every day.

I read a quote today that really made me re-think the concept of gifts.

Pain is a gift.  It puts us in a position where we’re quicker to be desperate for God.  When we seek Him, we will find Him.  – Lauren Scruggs

Wow – seriously – pain is a gift?  Well, at the risk of stating the obvious, I’m in pain and don’t feel like it’s a gift.  LOL.

I understand the concept – when we are at our lowest, that’s when we depend on God the most.  On the mountaintops we rely less on Him.  I’m not sure why it is like that, but I suspect it’s just human nature.  When the road is smooth, we don’t drive as cautiously and we’re not on the lookout for the potholes in the road.

My physical pain will be a distant memory soon, but not everyone’s pain is temporary.  There are so many different types of pain, and they all involve different kinds of suffering.    In addition to physical pain, there is mental, emotional, and spiritual pain.

Lauren Scruggs, a beautiful model, lost her eye and hand in an accident.  She wrote a wonderful book called Your Beautiful Heart; 31 Reflections on Love, Faith, Friendship, and Becoming a Girl Who Shines.  It’s my go-to book when I’m feeling sorry for myself.  Yes, even Christians suffer from self-pity from time to time.  We’re not perfect – just forgiven.  🙂

NATIONAL DATE NUT BREAD DAY

TL 12-22 NATIONAL DATE NUT BREAD DAY

12-22 WHEN YOU CLOSE YOUR EYES

From the title, you may think we’re going to talk about dating nutty people, but no – that’s not what this is about.  LOL!!!

It’s NATIONAL DATE NUT BREAD DAY!!!   Doesn’t quick bread sound like a good snack to bake up and take to work or give to a neighbor?  Baked goods are a wonderful last-minute gift to give.

Here’s a great recipe for diabetics – it’s only 4 ingredients (one of them is coffee – yay), easy and inexpensive to make!

Here’s another recipe that looks very good:

Dates do have natural sugars, but are rich in dietary fiber, which prevents LDL cholesterol absorption in the gut.

I wish we could put up some of the Christmas spirit in jars and open a jar of it every month.  – Harlan Miller

Nuts are also rich in fiber as well as healthy fats.  There are about 90 calories in a slice of Date Nut Bread, so it’s best to fight the temptation to eat the whole loaf in one day.

For centuries men have kept an appointment with Christmas.  Christmas means fellowship, feasting, giving and receiving, a time of good cheer, home.   – W.J. Ronald Tucker

May the spirit of Christmas bring you peace,
The gladness of Christmas give you hope,
The warmth of Christmas grant you love.
– Author Unknown

I wonder if this recipe would be better if we used Splenda in place of sugar – but it also has shortening in it – so…  hmm.  So much for healthy alternatives.  We don’t use shortening in our family.  The finished bread sure does look good though.

Well, I hope you can find a recipe that you like in this collection.  You might want to try more than one of them.  Date Nut Bread is one of the favorites in our family not only because of the health benefits, but because it reminds us of Christmases past.  What is it about food and holidays?  I don’t know – but I sure do like it!  😀

THANKSGIVING DAY

TL THANKSGIVING

(11) HAPPY THANKSGIVING FROM THE STEEPLE

Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving, and make a joyful noise unto him with psalms.  – Psalm 95:2

What is Mel thankful for?  Well, God healed him of terminal leukemia in 1998, so it’s obvious that he is very thankful for life.  He’s also thankful for the Holy Ghost.  He’s thankful for another day to praise God for His goodness!

How many ways can we thank God for all the blessings He has bestowed on us?

If the only prayer you said in your whole life was, “thank you,” that would suffice.  – Meister Eckhart

Offer unto God thanksgiving; and pay thy vows unto the most High.  – Psalm 50:14

Thanks be to God for all the miraculous deeds He has done in my life.  I don’t know why He is so good to me, but I’m sure glad He is!

God gave you a gift of 86,400 seconds today. Have you used one to say “thank you?”  – William A. Ward

What would Thanksgiving be without Charlie Brown.  Put on your jammies and fuzzy socks.  Grab your favorite snack and watch this cute cartoon with me.

That I may publish with the voice of thanksgiving, and tell of all thy wondrous works.  –  Psalm 26:7

This day and every day I will lift my hands to the heavens and praise the Lord for all the many blessings He has bestowed on me.

As each day comes to us refreshed and anew, so does my gratitude renew itself daily. The breaking of the sun over the horizon is my grateful heart dawning upon a blessed world.   – Terri Guillemets

This is a cute little song –  you’ll be singing this all day!  You’re welcome.  😉

I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify him with thanksgiving.  – Psalm 69:30

Shine Your everlasting light in my perpetual darkness, heavenly Father.  May everything I do be for Your honor and Your glory, for there is no other reason to do anything I do.

For each new morning with its light,
For rest and shelter of the night,
For health and food, for love and friends,
For everything Thy goodness sends.
– Ralph Waldo Emerson

I’ve made Monkey Bread in the past, but this Apple Monkey Bread looks so delicious!  I’m always thankful for the food on Thanksgiving Day – aren’t you?

I’m thankful for food, shelter, love of friends and family and Charlie Brown cartoons around the holidays.  All of these things bring to mind happy times of the past and provide hope for the future.  I hope you will take some time today to let your friends and family know how much you love them.  Take time to let God know you love Him too.  ❤
