FALL IN LOVE WITH JESUS

There’s just something about fall…  we want to spend more time in the house nesting, baking, pumpkin spicing EVERYTHING!  We get out long enough to enjoy a tailgate party and watch a football game – but even then we’re snuggled up in a stadium blanket.  It’s time to slow down and rest.  Are you weary and burdened?  Jesus says He will give us rest!  We can trust that promise to be true because Jesus doesn’t lie.

The bright summer had passed away, and gorgeous autumn was flinging its rainbow-tints of beauty on hill and dale.  – Cornelia L. Tuthill, “Virginia Dare: Or, the Colony of Roanoke,” 1840

It’s about time for me to change from plain cotton sheets to cotton flannel sheets.  They’re so soft and comfy and surprisingly cool.  I used to think they would be too warm, and I’d end up too hot at night, but that hasn’t been the case.  They’re perfect for the fall and winter months.

As I begin counting my blessings this year, at the top of my list is the way Jesus brings sweet rest to my weary and burdened spirit.  Along with the theme of rest, I will include the set of new flannel sheets on the bed.  The house is slowly transforming into a warm and cozy oasis from a cold and cruel world.  Isn’t that what home should be?

[T]hat old September feeling… of summer passing, vacation nearly done, obligations gathering, books and football in the air…. Another fall, another turned page: there was something of jubilee in that annual autumnal beginning, as if last year’s mistakes and failures had been wiped clean by summer.                 – Wallace Stegner

So many people get the urge to do a deep cleaning in the spring – we’re bombarded with magazine articles about spring cleaning.  I’ve always been prone to do my deep cleaning in the fall.  Don’t ask me why, but I have more energy and the spirit seems more willing, and if there’s one thing I know about myself – I have to strike while the iron’s HOT.  I know that energy won’t last.

I say a little prayer, then I’m off to the races, cleaning out closets and cupboards, scrubbing and mopping, sweeping and dusting.  When I’m finished, I’m more than ready to ask Jesus to give me that rest He promises.

When I was younger, I spent a lot of time out shopping and fighting off the crowds of people so I could find some bargains.  I had people to buy gifts for, so I was part of the crazy rat race!  These days, I opt for a warm spot, hot tea, cozy slippers, and a laptop.  It’s a blessing to have a time of rest and renewal.  The older I get, the more I appreciate rest.

What’s at the top of your blessing list?  🙂

NATIONAL FALL FOLIAGE WEEK

tl-9-27-thru-10-3-national-fall-foliage-weekI know the upcoming election is important – it’s a turning point for America.  Having said that, I will add that I’m sick and tired of the campaign speeches, debates and mud slinging on both sides.

When I read that this week is NATIONAL FALL FOLIAGE WEEK, my first thought was “Oh how lovely to sit and watch the amazing colors dancing instead of watching politics on television.”

Here are a few poems about this beautiful time of year:

… and meanwhile, back in Kansas – What is John Coyote up to?  Let’s take a look at his latest videos!

http://youtu.be/xlWjvaKDpGk

He said this video was taken at Little Walnut River, ten miles southeast of Augusta. Kansas.  There is a unique beauty here in Kansas – or maybe I’m just biased in my opinion – ya think?

I want today’s post to serve as a gentle reminder that we should get outdoors while we still can.  Before long the weather will be too bad and we’ll be stuck indoors – and you know what that means…  CABIN FEVER!  What will you do before the first snow of the year?

If you live in or around Kansas, you might want to take in the 16th annual Homemade Holidays Craft Show in Ottawa on November 14th.  It’s held at the Ottawa and Franklin County Visitor Information Center at 1230 S. Ash from 9am – 4pm.  I believe it’s free – (at least I saw no mention of a charge).  For more information you can call them at 785-229-8030.

Are you in the mood for some relaxing music and a bunch of friendly folks?  THIRD SATURDAY is also going on in Ottawa through December 19th when everyone in the community comes together for a fun relaxing day.

November 21st is the annual Christmas Festival and Parade of Lights in beautiful downtown Salina, Kansas.  I didn’t see what time it begins, but I’m guessing it’s around 10-ish.

The Downtown Holiday Parade in Hutchinson, Kansas is also on November 21st at 10am.  Good luck being in two places at the same time.  Why do they do that?

Kansas has a Swedish community not far from Wichita called Lindsborg.  It’s a college town and they have unique shops and restaurants.  Every Sun, Tues, Wed, Thurs, Fri & Sat from November 8th – January 24th they will have the Birger Sandzen Holiday Gift Show at the Memorial Art Gallery at 401 N. First St.  For more information about that you can call them at 785-227-2220.

An evening stroll may be a little brisk these days, but in Wellington, Kansas they have the First Friday Art walk at the No. 7 Coffee House at 115 S. Washington from 5pm – 7pm.  I guess you grab a cup of their coffee to keep warm before you walk – or even while you walk – good thinking, No. 7!  For more information you can give them a call at 620-326-6777.

There’s still time to get out and go before we get stuck indoors!  These are all fun activities – but I think my friend John has the right idea – just go out and enjoy nature!  You never know what you may learn.  🙂

DAY TRIPPIN’ AROUND KANSAS

DAY TRIPPIN' AROUND KANSAS

Is it silly to want to take a trip out to Applejack Pumpkin Patch if you don’t have small children with you?  Can I tell you a secret???  I’ve never actually been to a pumpkin patch before.  I suppose it’s because I don’t have kids – but the second part of that secret is…  I’ve always wanted to visit a pumpkin patch!  It just looks like a lot of fun!  Having fun is not a sin – last time I checked.

So, this photo, taken just outside of the Applejack Pumpkin Patch is of my friend, Susan.  She posted it on facebook and I wanted to post it here today.  I love it when my Wichita friends post their day trips (even though I think she was technically on the job – which explains the vest).  I appreciate her giving me permission to share it with you.

The Minion Hay Bale... LOL!!!
Susan & the giant Minion Hay Bale… LOL!!!

I’m so thankful she posted this because we drove past it on the way to an antique store just a few days ago – and did I have my camera???  Well of course I didn’t!!!  I was kicking myself from that moment on.  I even suggested we take another trip just to get a photo of this.  That idea was not met with a great deal of enthusiasm, to say the least.  :-/

Applejack Pumpkin Patch is in Augusta, Kansas.  They have a facebook page:  https://www.facebook.com/Applejack-Pumpkin-Patch-306961532736120/

There are scheduled activities and loads of fun for everyone (even the childless – well – probably).  I may not have kids – but I feel as though I’m still a kid myself…  for better or worse!

I’ve seen bales of hay made into a lot of different things – I must admit this is the first Minion I’ve seen – how creative is that?  Usually we see hay bales made into  jack-O-Lanterns…  you know, painted orange with the scary black face – that’s usually what we see.

Susan’s husband posted that if she had her way, Susan would take this giant Minion hay bale home with her and put it in their front yard.  I replied by saying, “She would be fighting ME for it – LOL!!!”  In reality, could you imagine either one of us – or both of us together – lifting that thing???  I’d say the argument is moot at best, wouldn’t you?

I enjoy living in Kansas, especially this time of year!  We have a lot of farms, which means we have tons of corn mazes, apple festivals, fall harvest celebrations and of course, pumpkin patches!  Now, we apparently have added a giant Minion hay bale to the list.  Does it get any better than that?  I think not!  Wink!  😉

I know I’m not supposed to question God’s plan, but I see others with their children this time of year and think, “You know, if I had children, we’d go to the pumpkin patch and we’d rent the big inflatable things for them to play on once in a while.”  I watch the neighbors with their children – and they throw the coolest birthday parties!  October would be the coolest time to be a parent.  How fun to take them to pick out just the right pumpkin – or at Halloween to go to the Field of Screams or some other fun place.

From the fullness of his grace we have all received one blessing after another.  – John 1:16

You’ve seen the images – the children tug at my heartstrings!  These are photos that are just too precious not to share.  I really love fall – especially where kids are concerned.  I could imagine myself taking these kinds of photos with my kids…  if I had them.

If I had a child, I imagine I would dress them in orange at this time of year.  I tend to wear orange and brown more, I suppose because of the colorful leaves falling all around.  I think I would be a frequent flyer at Zulily.com and be on the lookout for the newest and cutest clothing and shoes for my child.

Such a sweet face

When I was a kid, we had a big maple tree in the back yard and I loved to play in the leaves.  I was supposed to be raking them, but mostly I played in them!  I imagine if I had kids we would play in leaves – every day of autumn!  What a wonderful motivator to remain active children must be.  The desire to keep up with them is surely strong.

Playtime would be every day

I would be more enthusiastic about decorating if I had children.  Most of what adults do are for their kids.  I would decorate with hay bales and potted mums and pumpkins – if it mattered.  I’m not excited about doing those things for myself necessarily.  If I had kids I know I’d want to surround them with beauty and give the very best I could.

If you have a child, do me a favor and enjoy every moment you have with him / her.  You are blessed beyond measure to have that charge.  🙂

FALL BACK

DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME ENDS

AN EXTRA HOUR TO SLEEP

When there is change jingling around in my pocket or the bottom of my handbag, that my friends, is a GOOD thing.  It means I will have something to lay on the table at the end of a good meal in a restaurant to let the server know he or she is appreciated.  It means I can make a phone call, I think.  It’s been a while since I’ve had to make a call from a pay phone – do they have a slot for pocket change anymore or do they have dollar bill slots?  I wonder if they exist anymore – everyone these days (except me) has a cell phone.

The changing seasons are good too, although I could do with more mild, shorter winters.  I’ve put in that request with my Maker, but to no avail it seems.  He does know best in these matters.  Remind me again about how global warming is the ultimate doom of us all when there is a pile of snow in my driveway this winter – ok?  But autumn – the prelude to the cold and the snow and the cabin fever I know I will endure in the coming months – oh I love autumn.  If only we could keep autumn, but it’s not meant to be.  We need to keep changing, bending without breaking under the pressure.

It’s difficult to bend without breaking as things change.  As the morals around us lower, we hang on to our core values, beliefs and integrity.  We pray that God will help us stand strong.  We don’t have to be vocal and annoying about things, but there is a quiet strength that will stay with us and help us remember who we are in God.  His Holy Spirit is in us and He will be with us to the end.

Change always comes bearing gifts.   – Price Pritchett

Gifts???  Seriously?  Changes are not always for the best – and just because the majority has gone along is no reason I should go along too.  I will not speak out, but I will not break under the pressure to go along either.  I may bend outwardly a little – but break – no.  God won’t let me break.  He won’t let me fail – no matter what is happening around me.

Here in Wichita we will be changing our clocks again.  It’s another change I’d love to do without.  The people in Arizona don’t have to do it – why do we?  Yes, I’m whining – but I will change all of the clocks in my house again…  daylight savings time goes away today.  We will have very dark mornings and it will get dark earlier now.  Sigh – I will miss the sunlight so much.  But I will keep smiling – and change my clocks – fall back one hour.  It’s not a change I embrace, needless to say.

On November 4th I hope to see a change in the government.  I hope to see a Republican senate in office because there need to be some core values, Christian beliefs and integrity in the White House.  Someone needs to put the brakes on what’s been going on for sure.  I wish the Republicans would give us a clear game plan instead of just saying they are opposed to the status quo.  It’s not enough to know they don’t agree with what’s happening – that’s lazy campaigning.  They really need to let us know they have a better plan – then spell it out for us.  That would be a great change in my humble opinion.

Christians – hang in there – bend with change without breaking.  Lean on the Lord – He won’t let you break.  He won’t let you fail.    😀
