MARTIN LUTHER KING JR DAY

1-16-mlk

“My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.  I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one—  I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.

“Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world.

“Righteous Father, though the world does not know you, I know you, and they know that you have sent me. I have made you known to them, and will continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me may be in them and that I myself may be in them.”  – John 17:20-26

Our Lord prayed for His believers to be as ONE.  He wants us to be united as He and His Father in Heaven are ONE.  It’s no secret that America is more divisive now than it’s ever been.  If you can imagine a way to divide us – we’re divided.  Age, race, weight, height, religion, and on and on it goes.  God’s not pleased and Christians should lead the way in healing the scars.  The healing begins with prayer and studying God’s Word.

Read your Bible and pray.  That’s what it takes to be a true Christian.  – Harold McKay

My friend Harold also told me another “secret” to success as a Christian.  He said as long as you’re sincerely praying for someone, there’s no way you can hate or even dislike them.  In life, if we could just learn to pray for those who irk us in life instead of fighting back – it’d be wonderful.

Of all the famous quotes from Dr. King, this is my favorite:

mlk-quoteIn this world, we are “beholden” to one another.  We’re fools if we think we’re not.

We must develop and maintain the capacity to forgive. He who is devoid of the power to forgive, is also devoid of the power to love. There is some good in the worst of us and some evil in the best of us. When we discover this, we are less prone to hate our enemies.  – Martin Luther King, Jr.

I vote for LOVE and FORGIVENESS as a Christian nation in 2017!  May we strive for unity in America this year.  Let’s make God smile.  🙂

PSALM 9:8 ON 9/8

TL 9-8 PSALM 9-8 ON 9-8

He rules the world in righteousness and judges the peoples with equity.  – Psalm 9:8

There are times when the political tension can be cut with a knife.  I see this election cycle as one of choosing the lesser of two evils.  That’s why I want to focus on God…  because HE reigns with righteousness and judges with equity.  Once His children back away from all the distractions of this election cycle and open God’s Word…  that’s when we can say with confidence, NO MATTER WHO IS ELECTED PRESIDENT, JESUS CHRIST IS LORD!

A BOOK WITH PROMISEThe Psalms have been a source of wisdom and comfort to me.  Even though this election is pivotal to America, in my opinion, God’s Word has given me assurance that no matter what happens, it will be alright because our God is in control – and He will not be mocked.  Those who are evil and wrongdoers will be brought to justice in the end.  The wheat will be separated from the chaff and God will have the last word.

I pray that God will work in the midst of Americans during this time.  Only God is able to cut through the babble in our country and touch human hearts, minds and spirits.  We need to learn what He wants for us now more than ever.  So many have completely rejected His Holy Word.  Through ministries we pray that some will find their way back.  We trust God for the increase because we know that His Word will not return to Him void.  We plant seeds…  that’s all we do.

AMERICA ON THE ROCKAMERICA'S IN HIS HAND

I love this song – and to tell the truth, I sing it with Heather as I’m driving in my little car – windows down and sunroof open – “We’ve all been lost and we’ve all been hurt, where our hope is thin and our faith don’t work, but nothing lasts forever, the only thing that matters is God is still God and He holds it together, so hang on now.”

Thank you, Heather – I will hang on!  Today’s reminder is this…  God is still God.  He will judge as only He can.  No matter who becomes the next President in the United States, God is still God and my hope and trust is in Him alone.  🙂

NATIONAL COTTON CANDY DAY

JUNE 11TH IS NATIONAL COTTON CANDY DAY

Today we celebrate the fun food that nearly every child has eaten at one time or the other…  COTTON CANDY!  It’s so much fun because who would think of eating cotton?  But cotton candy almost immediately melts in your mouth and is so yummy and sweet.

6-11 FUN AND LOVE

As we get older and have to face the big issues in life, it’s good to take a moment to close your eyes and think about fun moments of childhood.  Today I will close my eyes and think about eating cotton candy at the circus.  Every spot that got wet turned into a sticky mess!

The best technique is to pull a bite-size piece, but even then you have to make sure you didn’t get your fingers wet – lol.  It’s just messy no matter how you eat it – but isn’t that part of the fun?

This sticky mess is known as cotton candy in the United States, India and Canada.  It’s called candy floss in the United Kingdom, Pakistan, Ireland, New Zealand and South Africa.  My favorite name for it is fairy floss.  If you’re in Australia, that’s what you call it.

Most cotton candy is sold from a bag these days, but when I was a kid, we got to watch them make it.  It’s a form of spun sugar with dashes of flavoring and food coloring added.  It’s made by heating sugar and spinning the liquefied sugar out through tiny holes where it re-solidifies in minutely thin strands of “sugar glass”.

Don’t you wonder who sits up at night thinking these things up?

Though cotton candy packs pounds on the body, it contains mostly air and weighs about an ounce.  When I was a kid, cotton candy was sold on paper batons.  Today it’s sold in plastic bags and you don’t get to watch them make it.

There are similar confections like the Persian Pashmak and the Turkish Pismaniye, but Pismaniye is made with flour and water in addition to sugar.

For the most part, it’s not the cotton candy that matters, but the memory that encompasses it.  In my life, it was fun at the circus or the state fair with my parents.  Good times – yeah, really good times.  🙂
