I believe the trend toward pitching a tent in front of an electronics store on Thanksgiving just to save your place in the ridiculously long line the next morning when the store opens – is finally waning – at least I hope it is.  Let’s just look at this thing logically for a minute.  We just spent a day around a table with loved ones, giving thanks to God for all of our many blessings – OH – but wait – we gotta pitch a tent so we can sleep on the sidewalk because there is a piece of technology I still need to possess.  WHAT???

It’s insane…  and we all know the definition of insanity…  it’s doing the same thing over and over, expecting a different result or outcome.  Look, there are two schools of thought about Black Friday – some people say we need to frequent the stores and the sales because the folks who are working need their job and don’t mind working on Thanksgiving and the day after.  Others, like me, believe that stores have no business being open on Thanksgiving at all – and should be closed the day after as well.  Those employees deserve a 4-day weekend before the Christmas nightmare begins!  I’m just one person with an opinion.  Will anyone listen?  Probably not – but that doesn’t stop me from speaking my mind.

RRiWcz1EgPbn7gcKacIg7nZTqgUYou know, God did not create us to kneel in front of the BEST BUY store.  God created us to praise and worship HIM.  He wants us to take time to sit and reflect on His Word and be quiet before Him so we can hear Him speak to our hearts.  Put your feet up by the fires of God’s Holy Spirit.  When we get so wrapped up in retail therapy that we can’t focus on anything except which stores we want to get to and when, then we are the ones who lose out.  I’m not saying that retail therapy is a bad thing, but I don’t think it’s so important to participate in Black Friday.

I’m not opposed to online shopping, and frankly I think most people would rather stay home and shop in their pajamas.  If consumers would resist the temptation to shop on the Friday after Thanksgiving, eventually the stores would not see the need to be open and employees could have the 4 day weekend they need – and more time with friends and family.  When did we stop thinking of others?  Wouldn’t you rather spend 4 days off than just one – and some don’t even get Thanksgiving off because stores are feeling like they need to be open on Thanksgiving.  It’s sad because everyone should be with family and friends – not co-workers – on Thanksgiving – and the day after and the weekend after that.  🙂

One afternoon I was waiting for my husband to get finished with a meeting.  We were staying at a lovely hotel with several little off-name boutiques made quaint little homes for themselves.  I decided to do a little shopping since I had some time to kill.

Stunning sterling silver jewelry and other assorted accessories tempted me as I walked into the first shop.  A very nice, older lady greeted me and let me know she’d be happy to help me.  I thanked her and continued browsing.  I noticed how neat and tidy everything looked.  I didn’t feel any pressure to buy anything and appreciated the shopping experience.

I walked to the next shop, expecting a similar shopping experience.  I was not greeted because the clerk was too busy texting someone.  That didn’t bother me all that much – I know sometimes life happens.  The shop was funky and gave me a strange vibe.  There were neon scarves hung this way and that, with no real order.  There was some sterling silver jewelry, but it was not neat nor tidy.  The merchandise looked as if people had come in and tried it on then slung it down anywhere.  It was a strange ambience and I left quickly.

There was a third store but I didn’t even go inside.

Am I being picky?  Well, maybe a little.  I’m the same way about antique shops.  Some of them are so spacious and things are neat and clean and tidy.  Others are so cramped, you really don’t know whether you dare touch anything for fear that the pile will fall down on you!

I’ll tell you a secret…  if the clerk is nice to me and wants to chat a bit, that makes up for a lot of other faults I may have concerning the shop.

Why do you read my blog?  It’s certainly not the content because my writing is not that interesting.  Maybe I’m the one who greets you every day.  Well, you’re the one that greets me too.  There are many days when I don’t see another person other than my husband.

I’ve tried to make this blog not only informative, fun and as real as possible, but attractive.  I want it to make some sort of sense to you, the reader.  To maintain a small business and hopefully help it become a big business, you need good people who care as much as you do about the business.  You need something to catch the eye as a person walks into your shop.  It above all needs to be clean and neatly arranged.  Something has to catch the eye, then the content keeps the interest and the price will hook the sale.

You may not have to pay a young person as much to work in your shop, but some of them would rather sit behind the counter texting than say hello to a customer or pick a scarf up off the floor.  It’s not a customer’s job to pick a scarf up.  I don’t know if the older lady had a vested interest in that shop or not, but I do know that she was pleasant and helpful to me, the customer.  True, I didn’t buy anything, but I remember the name of the shop and will go back if we stay at that hotel again.  She, and it, made a lasting impression.  🙂
