GUMDROP DAY

tl-2-15-gumdrop-day-2

Happy Gumdrop Day!!!  I’d also like to say happy birthday to my sweet mother in Heaven.

The first thing I thought of when I saw that it’s Gumdrop Day was how my mother used gumdrops to decorate a simple, clear plastic tree-shape at Christmastime.  It was so cute!

Gumdrops come in both fruit and spice varieties.  Sometimes the spice ones are called spice drops.  Some folks use gumdrops for decorating baked goods, gingerbread houses and other crafting.  I like to eat them out of my hand – and I prefer the spice drops to the plain fruit gumdrops.
In the U.S., three other “old-fashioned” gumdrop candies are also popular:  Orange Slices, Licorice Babies, and Spearmint Leaves.  These are larger than traditional gumdrops or spice drops.
Sometimes my mom would use the same plastic tree to put pastel colored spice drops on for Easter.
Do I have you tempted to buy some gumdrops?  Let’s take a look at oldtimecandy.com:
Interestingly enough, these are the larger size gumdrops – I couldn’t find the smaller ones here.  I’m a little surprised since this is old-time candy.  😉
SMILE

Don’t be afraid,
Don’t hold a grudge
Just ease back your fears
And smile.
Look at a young child
and wonder what makes them smile,
Lollipops, Gumdrops, Butterfly’s?
Chocolate, Rainbows, Blue sky’s?
What makes you smile?
Sun sets, Sun rise, Blue sky’s?
Roses, Noses Kisses, love?
A Fairy Tale, A happy ending, A white dove?

Bring the  things that you have that your already smiling at.
Family. Friends. Children. Mom. Dad.
Shelter. Food. Money.
Growth. Comfort
Love.
Just relax. And Smile.

Although gumdrops are usually associated with Christmas, you can make up a batch for Easter for decorating or to have on hand for a sweet treat.  🙂

MESSIAH

tl-12-20-handels-messiah

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders.  And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.  Isaiah 9:6

I’m always torn when writing the title…  one of my professors in college threw a fit when someone referred to this work as Handel’s Messiah.  He told the student (thankfully it was not me) that it is simply MESSIAH and it’s not necessary to preface it with the author’s last name.  So, I split the difference – I didn’t put Handel’s name in the main title but added it on to the banner.  Everyone happy?  Good.  Let’s move on and talk about this magnificent work.

The oratorio Messiah by George Frederic Handel, although clearly stating “To God alone the glory,” was still met with skepticism and some even considered the work to be blasphemous!  Can you imagine?  It reminds me of the split reaction witnessed in my generation when “Godspell” and “Jesus Christ Superstar” were released.  No, it’s not Handel, but you get my drift, right?

So, Handel thought he could fan the flames a bit by scheduling the premiere in Ireland instead of London because he didn’t want to be close to the Anglican Bishops.  He also advertised the piece as A Sacred Oratorio instead of emphasizing the name Messiah.

As most of us know, the piece depicts the life of Christ and not just one aspect.  It was written for Easter originally since it ends with the popular and majestic Hallelujah Chorus.  Actually, only the first third of the work is dedicated to the birth of Christ.  The second act is about the death of Christ and the third act of course focuses on His resurrection.  It premiered in the spring during the Lent season.

But here’s what transpired…  Laurence Cummings, the conductor of the London Handel Orchestra, determined that the work would be fitting for Christmas, noting that there is so much fine Easter music already, but very little music for Christmas.  By the 19th century, Messiah quickly became a Christmas staple, especially in the United States.

It blows my mind that Handel wrote the 259-page score in about 24 days with minimal errors.  Richard Luckett, author of Handel’s Messiah:  A Celebration, writes that there are some uncorrected errors or blotted out notes, but remarkably few mistakes considering the speed in writting the score.

We’re reminded by Lucinda today that Jesus is the Way to have life eternal in Heaven.  Aren’t we thankful?must-be-jesus

For Unto Us a Child Is Born is my favorite portion of Messiah that addresses the birth of Christ.  I once had the amazing opportunity to sing in a choir that performed this work and it’s probably the most challenging cantata I’ve been part of – but it was such fun to learn, and as an alto, it kept me on my toes.  There is so much back and forth, especially in this song.  If you lose your place you’d better just drop out until you figure out where you are – you could be singing along with the tenors if you aren’t careful.

EASTER

TL 3-27 EASTER

Tomb, thou shalt not hold Him longer;
Death is strong, but Life is stronger;
Stronger than the dark, the light;
Stronger than the wrong, the right…
– Phillips Brooks, “An Easter Carol”

JOY

HALLELUJAH!!!  Herein lies the HOPE of every Christian on earth!  Jesus was raised from the dead by God and now sits at His right hand.  When He ascended into Heaven, He left His precious Holy Spirit to help us navigate this tricky life.  That’s the GOOD NEWS of Christianity – but guess what?  The news gets better…  that same Jesus that died for our sins, was buried and raised by God the Father will one day soon be told to come back to earth to snatch His own so we can live eternally in Heaven with Him!

What a surprise we got today when we found EASTER SNOW on the ground.  I had to write a new poem!

A LOVELY EASTER SNOWAnd here’s an old poem about the cutest little Easter bonnet ever!  EASTER BONNET

There is not one negative fact for me to report, therefore, I have no reason to be anything but positive!  God is love…  God sent Christ to be love incarnate…  Christ willingly gave His very life because He loves us… God raised Christ from the grave and He LIVES!!!  That same Jesus IS coming from the eastern sky one day soon to take us home forever.  So, make an Easter bonnet from a paper plate, a strand of ribbon and assorted baubles.  Apply a bit of lipstick and blush (coordinating colors with your Sunday best, of course) – and BE JOYOUS!  The outward appearance is not the most important part – but the JOY of the LORD flowing from within is essential.  😉EGGS OF LIFEI asked a pastor once what the difference is between happiness and joy.  He said that happiness is dependent on external conditions or situations and joy is not.  For example, if it’s payday and the sun is shining and I haven’t had problems with my co-workers, I could very well be happy, but not necessarily filled with joy.  A deeper, more meaningful and constant state of mind and spirit is joy – the JOY of the LORD from God’s Holy Spirit, to be precise.  Whether skies are sunny or stormy, this deep settled peace and joy from Him keep me floating on faith.  Sails of grace, mercy, love and hope on God’s vessel are enough.  Just enough.  That knowledge makes me joyful.

The joyful news that He is risen does not change the contemporary world.  Still before us lie work, discipline, sacrifice.  But the fact of Easter gives us the spiritual power to do the work, accept the discipline, and make the sacrifice.   – Henry Knox Sherrill

Spiritual power…  indeed.  Let’s take that power from God with us into the world.  HALLELUJAH!!!  🙂

INTERNATIONAL HAT DAY

WHY DO YOU WEAR A HAT?  – a blog poem sort of thing for International Hat Day by Linda Palmer © 2015

Do you wear a hat to feel good?

Does it make you feel like you’re great?

If that’s the reason, it’s okay,

Put it back on – don’t hesitate!

girl-204326Do you wear a hat to cover

Your head where there used to be hair?

Don’t worry, I won’t take it off

To reveal what’s now under there!

Do you wear a hat to dress up

For Christmas or Easter Sunday?

It’s a form of Christian worship

To Jesus Christ, Who is the Way.

Do you wear a hat to show folks

That you can be easy going?

Is it your way to be relaxed

And show that with life you’re flowing?

Do you wear a hat that’s funny

Just to make other people smile?

I admire those who use humor

To help others walk the next mile.

Do you wear a hat to go with

An entourage on wedding day?

The attention will be focused

On you for sure, what can I say?

Do you wear a hat to honor

This great country’s military?

Is it part of a uniform

As you serve civilians like me?

hats-557581Do you wear a hat just for fun?

Is it just what you want to do?

Far be it for me to change things,

God just wants for you to be you.

Do you wear a hat to keep warm?

A sock cap can be very nice.

Winter is coming and it’s cold,

There will be so much snow and ice.

girl-15715Do you wear a hat in summer

To keep the sun off of your face?

That’s a very good idea

Along with sunscreen everyplace!

I wish you’d leave a comment here.

Your comments mean a lot to me,

They fill my heart with love and cheer!

HAVE A VERY HAPPY INTERNATIONAL HAT DAY!  🙂

TL EASTER SUNDAY

Our faith is what connects our weakness to God’s power.  – Wanda McDaniel

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for sending Jesus as a baby into our world with a mission to save our sins at Calvary.  Thank You for raising Him from the dead and for Your precious Holy Spirit.  Thank You for loving us so much!

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

And with great power gave the apostles their witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus: and great grace was upon them all.  – Acts 4:33

How many colors can you fathom?  There are not enough colors on the palette to describe the joy in every Christian’s heart and soul today!  God raised Jesus from the dead and HE IS ALIVE!!!  The colors available to us are not vivid enough to paint the joy we feel today!

Easter says you can put truth in a grave, but it won’t stay there.   – Clarence W. Hall

God did not leave us in Saturday – after death and despair.  He raised Christ from the dead and now He sits at the right hand of God in heaven.

And…  when God raised Christ from the grave, He did not leave man alone either, but gave us His Holy Spirit to help us.  That is love.  So as you paint Easter eggs, remember to use the most bright and vivid colors you can find because we are celebrating today!

The resurrection gives my life meaning and direction and the opportunity to start over no matter what my circumstances.   – Robert Flatt

Throughout my life I’ve heard the phrase “I know that I know that I know that I KNOW my Savior is alive!”  It means that the faith you have remains unshaken and you continue to fully trust in God through Christ Jesus no matter what.

The joyful news that He is risen does not change the contemporary world.  Still before us lie work, discipline, sacrifice.  But the fact of Easter gives us the spiritual power to do the work, accept the discipline, and make the sacrifice.   – Henry Knox Sherrill

We know that regardless of outward appearances, God has a plan and He knows what He’s doing.  Keep praying and reading His Word.  Trust Him for the answers you need in your life.

Let the resurrection joy lift us from loneliness and weakness and despair to strength and beauty and happiness.   – Floyd W. Tomkins

As you color Easter eggs, think about all the beautiful colors that represent how thankful you are for the resurrection of Christ – and that He is ALIVE!!!  Happy Easter!!!  🙂

A COMMENTARY FROM THE HEART

TL A COMMENTARY FROM THE HEART (23)

THE LITTLE NOTES
Remember Waylon Jennings & friends in their OUTLAW days?  They did a song called, “Put Another Log on the Fire.”  I guess really it was Tompall Glaser ‘cuz he wrote it.  Well, Daddy used to walk around the house singing this to Mama. They were crazy and I really miss them!  Go over to You Tube and listen to that song – it’s really funny.

I guess I can post the lyrics without getting in trouble.

PUT ANOTHER LOG ON THE FIRE

Put another log on the fire.
Cook me up some bacon and some beans.
And go out to the car and change the tyre.
Wash my socks and sew my old blue jeans.
Come on, baby, you can fill my pipe,
And then go fetch my slippers.
And boil me up another pot of tea.
Then put another log on the fire, babe,
And come and tell me why you’re leaving me.

Now don’t I let you wash the car on Sunday?
Don’t I warn you when you’re gettin fat?
Ain’t I a-gonna take you fishin’ with me someday?
Well, a man can’t love a woman more than that.
Ain’t I always nice to your kid sister?
Don’t I take her driving every night?
So, sit here at my feet ‘cos I like you when you’re sweet,
And you know it ain’t feminine to fight.

So, put another log on the fire.
Cook me up some bacon and some beans.
Go out to the car and lift it up and change the tyre.
Wash my socks and sew my old blue jeans.
Come on, baby, you can fill my pipe,
And then go fetch my slippers.
And boil me up another pot of tea.
Then put another log on the fire, babe,
And come and tell me why you’re leaving me.

I love being married. It’s so great to find that one special person you want to annoy for the rest of your life. – Rita Rudner

My Mom was a note writer, a hugger and very vocal with praise and support. It’s just who she was. God is a great matchmaker because He blessed her with a man who loved and appreciated all of that! Daddy was not easily embarrassed by it and actually encouraged her in that way. I loved watching my parents – love. They knew how to enjoy married life. They knew the secret – don’t be so serious and have FUN with it!

My Daddy found little notes all over the place. One year for Easter, my Mama put quotes and little tidbits of quotes on slips of paper, folded the paper and stuck them in plastic eggs. She hid the eggs all over inside the house (I think it rained that year). She had Daddy and I hunted all over the house for the eggs! When they were all found, we sat down at our kitchen table, opened the plastic eggs and read aloud the quote or saying enclosed. That was my favorite Easter! Oh, and of course there was a little “kiss” inside the egg too – just to sweeten the deal a bit!

Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. – 1 Peter 4:8

After Mama died, I found many journals, books of poetry, verses, words of wisdom and miscellaneous diaries in a kitchen drawer. Mama was quite the philosopher! She knew how to turn sadness into gladness and was so clever and wise in her decision-making. In other words, she had a Master’s Degree in… LOVE!

(4) HAPPY EASTER FROM THE STEEPLE

You never saw Him, yet you love Him. You still don’t see Him, yet you trust Him—with laughter and singing. Because you kept on believing, you’ll get what you’re looking forward to: total salvation. – 1 Peter 1:8-9

You’ll get what you’re looking forward to: total salvation.

We were not there to see the death, burial and resurrection of our Lord, yet we know without a doubt that He was raised from the dead and sits at the right hand of His Father. And yes, we trust Him with every moment of our lives. We laugh with Him and sing praises to His wonderful Name!

But I am certain that he who will take up my cause is living, and that in time to come he will take his place on the dust. – Job 19:25

I know – I am certain. On that point Job desires to express the utmost confidence. We need to have that same level of trust about our God’s plan of salvation.

But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept. – 1 Corinthians 15:20

The firstfruits of them that slept? Well, just as the sin in the garden of Eden made us all sinners, Christ’s resurrection assures that all who accept His saving grace will rise at the appointed time. When Christ comes back to earth for His children, the dead in Christ will be risen from the grave, go to heaven to live forever with the Lord in heaven! And yes, heaven is for real (you knew I’d have to make reference to the movie, right?)

Now THAT is something to celebrate!

What is the goal of the Christian life? Isn’t it to know Christ and to be more like Him? If we don’t do that, then Christ died in vain.

I gave up all that inferior stuff so I could know Christ personally, experience his resurrection power, be a partner in his suffering, and go all the way with him to death itself. If there was any way to get in on the resurrection from the dead, I wanted to do it. – Philippians 3:10-11

Have you given up all that inferior stuff?

I thought there were Easter EGG hunts today – but this little gal is hunting golf balls!  LOL!!!

Too cute!  Happy Easter!!!
