CYBER MONDAY

tl-cyber-mondaywords-1797662__340-3

Today is the day to stay in your pajamas and take advantage of the bargains available online!  There are literally tons of deals out there, so no matter what you are shopping for, there is surely a bargain waiting for you to find it.

15239340_1849686458609149_912808752_nLucinda is a talented poet and contributes regularly to my blog.  Her book “Coffee with Jesus” has been my go-to devotional for many years.  Every week I read a poem and companion Scriptures.  Her words inspire and encourage my spirit to do the things that God has called me to do.15218701_1849714758606319_1672215540_n

Her poem “The Napkin” is particularly inspiring – and mine serves as a reminder of the sacrifice that Christ made to save me for eternity.  I could imagine a table setting with these napkins being so lovely at Christmas.  What a unique touch for a family gathering!

I cherish mine and keep it displayed year around.

15175485_1849714205273041_1937375671_nThere’s just something about having a journal to jot down thoughts as you have devotionals.  Sometimes the Lord speaks and inspires us and it’s great to have this companion to “Coffee with Jesus” close by when God inspires us – right?  When you buy the book today, this wonderful journal (a $6 value) can be yours for free!

And wow – upgrading to hard cover – how great is that???  Since this is a devotional book and will be used time and again, year after year…  I mean – when it’s a paperback, it will begin to show wear so much sooner than the hard cover would!  That’s a fantastic bonus, isn’t it?

Today’s the day to buy “Coffee with Jesus” and choose a bonus!  Decisions…  decisions!

When you finally decide which bonus you want to choose, go to www.lucindaspoetry.webs.com

Although not part of the Cyber Monday special…  Lucinda’s book, “A Second Cup with Jesus” is a must-have!  I’m a little biased and like this book in particular because, well…  I got to help with it!  When Lucinda asked if I would like to write prayers to go with her poems, I was so excited and anxious to do that!  We hope and pray that this book will be a blessing to you.  It also makes a great gift.  ❤15211774_1849714728606322_459068675_n

Everyone needs a great devotional book – and I can’t think of a better one!  These poems & prayers will be a blessing.  It’s our prayer that God will speak to your spirit through them.  🙂

LEAP DAY – JUMP FOR JOY

TL 2-29 LEAP DAYApproximately every four years, nature flips a switch and we get an extra day in February!  Today the switch was flipped and here we are!  Happy Leap Day!  So, I wanted to find out what’s in it for us – other than another day to enjoy my February perpetual calendar…  lol.untitled (59)

You have to check this out – so funny!  Did you know that you can consume a TON of bacon on leap day to make up for all the other days when you don’t eat it?  Um…  nah – not really.  Fake Leap Year Facts:  https://twitter.com/hashtag/FakeLeapYearFacts?src=hash

The people in banking do not get this day off.  It’s not a National Holiday.  If you have banking business – go for it because they will be open.

Several restaurants in our area are offering specials.  Here are just a few:

untitled (56)If it’s your turn to take the doughnuts to work – here ya go!!!  🙂  Remember, you do have to buy one dozen at regular price to get the second one for $2.29.  The ad said this is good at every Krispy Kreme in the U.S.

I just had a funny thought.  When all those rulers way back when were trying to decide which month to add the day to – they almost chose August.  If they had chosen August, then that second dozen doughnuts would be costing $8.29.  LOL!  I know…  bad joke.  Sorry.

The Schlotzsky’s restaurants in Wichita (all 4 locations) are offering $1 off any sandwich today.  Check their twitter page to see if that special is good in your neck of the woods.  It looked like this special was good for everyone – not just those born on leap day.

https://twitter.com/pizzahut

Pizza Hut will dish out a free one-topping Personal Pan Pizza to carry out customers with IDs showing they were born on leap day.  Good deal for those who only get to celebrate their TRUE date of birth every 4 years or so!GOD WILL BE OUR UMBRELLA

untitled (58)The ad also said if you were born on leap day you get a free meal (ID required, of course).

There are great deals today for leap day babies!  If you go to Twitter and type LEAP DAY SPECIALS in the search engine, it will take you to a page that has all the goodies for the day!  🙂

NATIONAL THRIFT SHOP DAY

TL 8-17 NATIONAL THRIFT SHOP DAY

Today is NATIONAL THRIFT SHOP DAY!!!  A thrift shop (also known as a thrift store, charity shop, hospice shop or resale shop) is a retail establishment run by a charitable organization to raise money to be used in accord with the organization’s stated charitable purpose.

A great cup of coffee begins with a great cup

Here in Wichita, we have quite a few thrift shops and I definitely have a few favorites.  About a month ago we lost our large Salvation Army Thrift Store, which made me sad.  They used to have a really great deal on Thursdays.  You could get a bag full of clothes (and I packed mine tight) for $5.

Polka dots are timeless fashion

If you have kids going back to school, check your local thrift stores today for special deals.  Yes, there are some old styles on the racks, but if you are handy with a needle and thread, you can update those clothes to update and customize them.  Follow this hashtag for great bargains!  #ThriftShopDay

I’m ready for a night out

I like vintage clothing!  There are some cute outfits and unexpected finds in thrift stores.  They don’t always have women’s petite sizes, but once in a while I find just the right size and style.

Nice coats – I see a few yellow ones

I’m starting to see some of the old styles coming back.  I’ve seen young girls in jumpers like we used to wear in the 1980’s.  I think they are so cute!  Every girl and woman needs to have one little black dress.  Where did I get mine?  Three guesses…  lol.

Pretty and flattering with a splash of green

Most thrift stores have more than clothing these days.  Ours have furniture, home décor items, accessories, shoes and even used books.  Now you can own a book for a reasonable price instead of checking it out of the library.

It’s fun to shop at the thrift shop because you see items that bring back memories.  You may find some rare antiques – and pay a lot less for them!

I still have my boat motor and use it once in a while.  There are so many great finds hiding in the corners, like this:

My mood ring is always blue

I appreciate handmade items and have to talk myself out of buying them.  Granny LaVella was talented at knitting and crochet:

This reminds me of my Granny LaVella

Are you in the mood to shop yet???

Here are a few common sense rules for thrift shop shopping:

  1. Take the price of gasoline into consideration when choosing which stores to visit.  If you have to drive too far, it will defeat the purpose of saving money.
  2. Check the merchandise carefully for flaws.  Remember you are buying second-hand stuff, so it could possibly have some defects.
  3. If the store does not allow you to try clothing on, turn around and walk out!  Some of the stores in our city do not let you try clothing on because they’ve had problems with theft.  I don’t purchase clothing until I’ve tried it on.
  4. If you have a large tote bag, it’s probably a good idea to take it to the thrift shop with you because they don’t always provide bags.
  5. Wear comfortable clothing and shoes today because you will probably be shopping till you drop!

The most important thing to do is have fun!  Saving money should be a happy experience.  🙂

IRON SHARPENS IRON… FRIENDSHIP

IRON SHARPENS IRON (2)

My group on facebook, A Second Helping of Wellness…  with a Dash of Humor & a Pinch of Faith – https://www.facebook.com/groups/asecondhelpingofwellness/ has come through again!  Last Monday I asked them to share their best shopping tips with my blog readers.  In this economy we all need help – at least I know I do!

  •  Coupons! Always coupons! And if you have a coupon that doesn’t have a specific size and it’s not on sale, always get the smallest one. It saves you more per ounce.
  • Beware of freebie sites on the internet.  Once I joined one of those and requested a few things and my computer ended up with all sorts of problems.  Is getting a virus on the computer worth getting a few freebies sent to my door?  No.
  • Be cautious about where you get coupons online for the same reason.  Some sites are notorious for either swamping your computer with spam or sending viruses.  Again, weigh your options and you’ll find it’s not worth the grief.
  • Keep in mind that Walmart has price matching.  If you see an item advertised elsewhere for less money, clip the ad and take it in to Walmart.  When you check out, show the cashier the ad and they will honor that price.
  • Try RedLaser to scan bar codes while you shop.  It compares prices at nearby stores so you can find the best deals.
  • Do you make several trips to the pharmacy?  Next time take a look around while waiting for the medicine.  Often the prices on nonperishables like crackers are lower than grocery stores.
  • Staple items like cereals, flour, rice and coffee are often less expensive at Supercenters like Target or Walmart.
  • There are cooking websites that allow you to type in the ingredients you have on hand.  The sites generate recipe ideas using only those foods so they don’t go to waste and you don’t have to make an extra trip to the store.

Myrecipes.com

Delish.com

  • Remember that frozen foods are just as nutritious as fresh.  When your favorite vegetables and fruits are out of season, you can find them at the frozen food aisle.
  • If you go to a farmer’s market just before it closes, the sellers might be willing to negotiate prices on items they don’t want to haul back home.
  • Sales run in six or eight-week cycles.  Scan circulars for deals on foods that won’t expire, and buy enough to last a month or two until the next sale.
  • A lot of times, I see something I really like in store, but can’t afford. I go on Ebay and often find it for a fraction of the cost, even with bidding wars. Eg: Lacoste polo shirts usually $90+ in store ~ I can find them for around $15 including shipping for like new, pre-owned on Ebay.

So you see, it really is possible to save at the store if you can wind your way around all the hype and see your way clear to the common sense ways of saving at the grocery store.  🙂

A COMMENTARY FROM THE HEART

TL ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY (12)

I spent most of the day rummaging around estate sales yesterday!  If I can find some unusual item or collectible that looks lonely and forgotten in a corner, it’s my duty to rescue it and take it home where I can then nurse it back to health with love and care.

Each sale has its own unique ambience.  When you walk in the door you immediately get a sense of whether these things were taken care of and worth taking a look at, or used, abused and ultimately thrown aside when no longer needed.

If you can learn to love yourself and all the flaws, you can love other people so much better.  – Kristin Chenoweth

There were two sales that represent each of these scenarios.  The first was a collector’s paradise – filled with little treasures at every turn.  The second was filled with items that were obviously well used, a little abused and may not have many more miles left in them.

The odd thing I noticed was at the second sale.  It seemed every other item I saw had a large sign on it that said AS IS.  The price did not reflect the fact that there was a flaw or damage to the item.  There was a flawless price on flawed merchandise.  As I said, we expect to strike bargains, and the buyers expect us to bargain with them.

What of this sign – AS IS???  I know without a doubt that this physical body of mine has that sign on it – and maybe yours does too.  Does my soul have a sign hanging on it too?  Were any of us born without flaws of character and needing redemption?  No.  We have an AS IS sign on our souls too.

Why were we worth redeeming?  Have you ever asked yourself why God sent Jesus to save us?  Why didn’t He just let the flood wipe everything out?  He had a deep-down faith in His creation – that we would seek a relationship with Him.

He saw the AS IS sign on us but sent His only Son, Jesus, to suffer and die on Calvary’s cross.  Then rise again on the 3rd day.  We are not stuck in Saturday, weeping and mourning in our sorry state.  Once we accept Christ’s sacrifice on Calvary, we are free and redeemed, washed clean by the precious blood of Christ, the Lamb of God.

Seek the LORD, and his strength: seek his face evermore.  – Psalm 105:4

Seek the Lord while He may be found.  He loves you so much He was willing to pay full price for you – AS IS.  He purchased your soul and wants to lovingly care for you throughout your life – and beyond.

I PRAYED FOR YOU

I’m going to take this thought a step further and submit that we should all look for the AS IS sign on each other?  I’m not suggesting that we prejudge anyone, but that we cut each other more slack.  I’m not suggesting that we whitewash over sin either; however, I would remind us that it’s not our job to change anyone.  That can only be accomplished by God’s Holy Spirit.  Here’s a great idea – let’s pray for one another, that our hearts and minds would be open to the leading of God’s Holy Spirit!  Doesn’t that sound like a winner???  🙂
