NATIONAL CUT YOUR ENERGY COSTS DAY

1-10 NATIONAL CUT YOUR ENERGY COSTS DAYThere are some basic common sense methods that will improve your bottom line and leave you with more jingle in your pocket.  Here are just a few:

  • Keep the fireplace damper closed.  Seal the ductwork and make sure you have a timer on the bathroom exhaust fan.
  • Turn down the heat. You’ll typically save 1 percent to 3 percent on your heating costs for every degree you dial down.
  • We recently had a humidifier installed and it saved us nearly $40 a month on our bill.  Before long it will pay for itself and our air does not seem so dry and we’re less stuffy in the mornings.
  • Log off your computer and shut it down at night.  Unused equipment consumes energy and warms your space which pushes up air conditioning costs in the summer.  Highly efficient Energy Star equipment and appliances often carry no cost premium but use 20-50% less energy.  Remember to flip light switches off when you leave a room.  It’s a simple thing – but can make a big difference!
  • According to the Department of Energy, you can reduce your heating and cooling needs by 30% just by adding a few batts of new insulation in your attic if your house is more than 25 years old.
  • It can be expensive to have a gas-powered fireplace.  By trial and error, we decided to invest in a space heater for our office space in the basement and leave the fireplace turned off.
  • If you can see daylight under your doors, it’s probably time for new weather-stripping.  It’s fairly simple to replace – just remove the old and nail on the new.
  • Consider drawing up a service contract with a professional who will come to your house to make sure your furnace and A/C are working properly.  Replace the furnace filter once a month.  The professional will make sure nothing is obstructing an outdoor heat pump and verify that your furnace is not on “emergency heat” as this will turn off energy-efficient settings and could double your heating costs.
  • Electrical cables, gas lines and pipes that enter your house may have gaps around them that have been haphazardly filled with a caulk, but that will eventually crack, peel and fall off.  These gaps let air inside the house and are entry points for mice and other insects.  Seal those gaps with expanding foam.  For water pipes under the sink, unscrew and pull back the escutcheon ring, then caulk around the pipe.  The ring is just decorative and will not block airflow.

These common sense steps add up over time.  Hopefully these tips will help you as they have helped us.  🙂

A COMMENTARY FROM THE HEART

TL A COMMENTARY FROM THE HEART (13)

Every right-wing, conservative, Christian in America is praying for hope and change in 2016.  No, not the fundamental transformation of the United States, but a return to the laws already in place that have not been enforced.  What a difference it would make if they would be.

There are a cast of thousands with their respective hats in the ring.  I’m not here to tell anyone who to vote for (like you’d listen if I tried), but I’m going to try to point one blatantly obvious fact out for you, just in case you missed it.

I hope Trump will continue to run under the Republican ticket.  If he runs under a 3rd party it will divide Republicans – split the party wide open!  This not only makes me nervous going forward, but it assures that we will lose the 2016 election.  It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure that out.  Split the Republican party?  Yep – and it would leave the Democrats laughing at us…  saying, “divide and conquer!”  It’d be awful if the Republicans were divided.  We need to remain united.  I pray we do.

In a prideful and arrogant tone, he says he does not pray to God for guidance.  He speaks with great candor which is refreshing, however, he lacks any sort of filter (certainly not a Holy Ghost brand of filter), and that concerns me greatly.

Why does it matter?  It matters because no man should consider himself more intelligent than his maker.  If he does not seek advice from a higher power, then he obviously thinks he IS the higher power and knows all.

He’s mistaken.  I’m not trying to be ugly.  Actually I’m being just as tactful as I can be…  but the fact is, he is mistaken.  We need God in America again…  and in order to get God and His principles back in America, it would make perfect sense in my brain that a Christian should hold the office of president.  Ya think???

Regardless of his economic status, perhaps he does not realize the true scope of the problem.  No one should go around putting down their competition, boasting about how much better they are.  The last time I saw that kind of campaign, I was in elementary school.  I was running for a seat on safety patrol and my competitor told everyone that I stole Twinkies from the coat room from other lunch boxes during lunch hour.

That was totally bogus…  my mom always packed a great lunch with my own Twinkie!  It was immature, but we were kids, so…  And yeah – I lost.  LOL.  I survived.

If he really cared about the Republican party, he’d back off and cool it.  Will he run under a new ticket?  If that happens – we’re sunk.  Honestly, our party needs to get its collective act together.  I’m both mad and sad…

I have no other candidate to endorse at this point, but…  there are some fine Christian Republican candidates running…  ones who would lean on God for guidance.

As you contemplate the candidates, always remember that this is all God’s perfect timing, not ours.  In His time all things will be made known.  In His time we will be taken to heaven.  Remember to always keep Christ before you.

ALWAYS BEFORE ME

I want to encourage you not to choose a candidate to back with feelings of frustration alone.    Please pray about who you will vote for – I mean really pray about it.  Our country is at a crossroads – we need to get this RIGHT!  May God help each one of us as we do our part to regain what dignity for America we can.  🙂

USE LESS STUFF DAY

TL 11-20 USE LESS STUFF DAY

11-20 I DON'T NEED AS MUCH

As you know, I’m a conservative.  Yeah – not gonna change me.

Extremism is so easy.  You’ve got your position, and that’s it.  It doesn’t take much thought.  And when you go far enough to the right, you meet the same idiots coming around from the left.  – Clint Eastwood

Whether we’re talking about food, packaging or leaving the water running while you’re brushing your teeth (yeah, that’s a pet peeve of mine), it’s just smart to use less if you can get by on less.  A few things were drilled into my head growing up.  My daddy used to come into a room and if the light was on and nobody was in there, he would ask in his booming and authoritative voice, “WHO’S PAYING THE LIGHT BILL?”  Well – duh – HE was!

Out in the country we didn’t have a garbage disposal.  My daddy dug a big hole out in the back yard – near the back fence, where we dumped our garbage (banana peels and the like).

We had a septic tank so we could not use a lot of toilet paper at one time.  Yeah, that’s probably more than you needed to know.  Ah, the joys of country living!

It’s USE LESS STUFF DAY!  Honestly, we could all do a better job of conserving just about everything, couldn’t we?

http://www.use-less-stuff.com/

Conservation was the theme in the Turner household, yet we always had enough.  Waste of any kind has always made me just a little crazy and I suppose it’s because of my upbringing.  I’m not for a minute suggesting that we live on less than we need to have a happy and fulfilling life, but to drown in excess seems…  well – excessive and unwise.

I’m sorry but I just laughed my way through this video – speaking of excessive and unwise (might I add – STUPID).  There is not one item in this video that would enrich my life or make me happier than I am today without it.  I’m not tempted by any of it – but I think it’s fun to watch.

For those of us with normal bank accounts, we can find ways to conserve and preserve in order to make our money go further and it also helps the environment in some cases.  So many times it’s just a matter of putting thought into what you do.  If you have a light on in a room and you are in there and need to see, that’s fine.  When you get up and leave the room, it’s time to flip the switch off.  It seems like common sense to me.  The water does not have to run while you are actually brushing your teeth.  Turn it off until you are ready to use it.  It’s so simple, right?  Well…  we know common sense is not a flower that grows in everyone’s garden.

Speaking of gardens, does anyone remember canning everything from the vegetable garden back in the day???  When I was a kid, we not only had a vegetable garden, but fruit trees as well, so we always had fresh cherries, apples, pears and apricots.

The family that cans together, stays together!
The family that cans together, stays together!

Try being conservative – just for today.  Use less stuff and you might be surprised at what you can do without.  😉

ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY

TL ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY (3)
On this day in 1920 the 19th Amendment, guaranteeing women the right to vote, was formally adopted into the United States Constitution .  Its two sections read:

The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.

Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.

I must say this is important to me as a Republican conservative woman.  I do not take my right to vote for granted.  Since I was old enough to vote, I’ve done so.

Patriotism is easy to understand in America – it means looking out for yourself by looking out for your country.  – Calvin Coolidge

untitled (21)
I’m a conservative Christian American woman and I vote. Want some apple pie?

I do more than make a mean apple pie!  My ears are open and my mouth is shut.  I want to hear something good from the Republican party.  I want to hear someone say they have a plan – I’m tired of hearing that they don’t like the other side’s plan – duh – none of us do!  Give me substance in your thought process, not just empty rhetoric!  I’m tired of tippy-toeing around because I might offend someone.  If my faith offends you – oh well…   TOUGH TOENAILS!  P.C. is strangling us!  We are a diverse nation – that’s what makes us so great!  Let’s be different – yes!  Don’t be afraid to believe what you believe.  I need the same freedom.

America was founded on Christian principles and beliefs.  Taking God out of things will never take Him away from me.  Did it ever occur to you that this country is in such a mess because its people have turned their backs on God?

If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.  – 2 Chronicles 7:14

Well, we have another election in 2016.  I’ll be voting if I’m alive.  Until then, I’m listening to candidates and studying policies, but above all else, I’m praying that God will direct the right person to run for office and win the election.  I want God’s divine hand involved in America again.  We need His help whether we think we do or not.  🙂
