A SUMMER OF PSALMS

I challenge you to name one thing in this world that never changes.  Time’s up!  Did you think of anything?  No, you didn’t – neither did I.  Everything changes…  EVERYTHING!  The foal in the photograph above is now a beautiful full-grown mare.  Living beings are born, they thrive and do what God intended, then they die and go back to God.  It’s the way God planned it.  The Bible tells us that our time is in HIS hand.  So you see, we don’t need to worry because God has us in His hand all the time.

God never changes.  His laws don’t change.  His justice doesn’t change.  His unending love never changes.  His peace is real.  The joy and happiness He bestows on our lives can only be described as dependable.  It’s honest and there’s no hidden agenda.  If He puts a rug on the floor in front of me, then asks me to stand on it, I know without a doubt He will not pull it out from under me, causing me to fall.  Can you say that about any person on this earth?  Get real – of course, you can’t!

This body of mine has changed from the time I was in my twenties.  Anyone who is honest will say a great big AMEN to that!  These chan.ges are a huge challenge – but God’s got me, so I’ve got this!

Changes are inevitable in this life, but it gets dangerous when we as people try to “overrule” God.  Do we rely on our wisdom more than we seek God’s laws?  We simply cannot say that some behaviors are not sinful when God has already said they are.

When pastors are motivational speakers instead of providing instruction and direction according to God’s Word, it’s not a favor to us poor sinners – any of us.  We all need to hear and know God’s truth – all of it.  I don’t hate anyone and care for everyone’s eternal soul.  For Pete’s sake, I’m not perfect and I don’t judge anyone.  God offers redemption for ALL through His Son’s death on Calvary’s cross.  He offers forgiveness for sin – any sin – take your pick.  They’re all alike in God’s eyes.

Change.  God causes the seasons to change.  He helps sinners to change.  We find Christ, learn what He wants for us, and turn from whatever is not pleasing in His sight.  He patiently helps us to live a life that is pleasing to Him.  Our lives can be so rich and full of Christ when He’s in the center of it.  🙂

MAY IS CREATIVE BEGINNINGS MONTH

TL MAY IS CREATIVE BEGINNINGS MONTH

It’s time to start a new hobby or learn that craft you always wanted to master.  How great would it be to help kids at summer camp this year with crafts?  There are also some senior centers that encourage creativity and they would surely appreciate help from volunteers.CREATIVE BEGINNINGS

Wow – Lucinda captured so many creative possibilities here!  Painting walls, flower arranging, writing, music, woodworking, yarn work, painting on canvas.  Isn’t the important message the fact that it’s a new day and we get another chance?  That’s the part I like the most!  🙂

What factors should be considered as you consider the endless possibilities?  I think my first question would be, how much will this project cost?  If you’re on a shoestring budget like me, you don’t want to have to buy a whole bunch of materials or equipment.  Let’s face it, there’s a possibility that you either won’t be good at it or you may not enjoy it like you thought you would.  If you don’t have a lot of money invested, you won’t feel so guilty about walking away from it.

It’s not limited to crafts – being creative could be something as simple as committing to workout three times a week.  Creating a healthier you is definitely a creative beginning.

Have you ridden a horse?  You never know if you’ll enjoy it until you try!  Many places offer riding lessons that aren’t too expensive.

Do you have an interest in music?  Maybe you’d like to be musically creative and take some piano lessons.

Some people have a real eye for photography.  Maybe it’s time to buy a good camera and start taking those great shots.  Choose a subject to photograph and focus on it – (no pun intended).

Count the cost for your creativity and make sure it’s something you have an interest in (or think you do) When you’ve decided what to do, schedule the activity and buy the items you’ll need to be a success.  We should make creativity a sort of second nature in our lives because it keeps life more fun!  When we use our imaginations to troubleshoot our way through challenges, it’s so much more interesting.

Even if you’re on the fence about what to do, find some friends (partners in crime) to try it with you.  If the new activity doesn’t work out for you, at least you’ll have your friends to giggle with you – and really that’s all that matters.

One May I thought it’d be nice to learn sign language.  There was a class at a local church, so I got a couple of girlfriends to go with me – and sadly, I was not good at sign language, but since I didn’t dive in by myself, it was fun anyway.  I had my friends to laugh with.

Your Creative Beginnings month project may be the start of something very exciting in your life – or if you decide to help children learn something new – or help senior citizens learn something new – you may make some very good friends for life.  The influence you have on others may not seem like much to you, but it may mean the world to them.

Ready…  Set…  BEGIN!  🙂

PREPARE YE THE WAY OF THE LORD

TL 12-1 PREPARE YE THE WAY OF THE LORDHow are your preparations going?  We’re not finished yet!  Today, let’s do something to serve the ones in our home.  I hear you saying you do that every day – lol!  You may feel as though you serve those in your own household every day, but I want to invite you to take a look at the chores assigned to each member of your family.

Who usually feeds the pets?  Who usually gathers the garbage to go out to the curb every week?  Who is the one that cleans the toilets?  Ugh…  lovely chore there!

Today I want you to do a chore that you don’t usually do – just take over and do it – no pomp or circumstance – and no announcement.  Just do it.  When you are asked WHY you did it – then you can let your family member know how much you appreciate them – and their faithfulness in doing that chore on a regular basis.  In my family, that would be followed by “Don’t expect it all the time, but…”

Do we tend to take our family members for granted?  Well of course we do!  When the trash gets taken out to the curb – it just magically takes itself out, right?  Stuff just happens – we each have our chores and that’s how life works smoothly.  This is just a little exercise to let your family members know they are appreciated.

As we take in the life and light of our Lord, may it shine forth in our attitudes and actions toward others, but especially in our own homes…  that’s where our mission should always begin – inside the walls of our own residence.

WRAPPED GIFTSGOD WITH US…  EMMANUEL.  He is our gift of hope in these uncertain and divisive days.  He loves every life – every soul is precious to Him – every one of us matter to Him.  We need to show appreciation for one another in our homes to begin with – then others around us – and finally to those who are a little further away – then we need to show the respect and honor to others that we want them to show to us.  Wrap a gift for other people and call it respect.  It sounds so very simple – why is it such a challenge?  :-/

MERRY CHRISTMAS

TL MERRY CHRISTMAS

BUSY BEING JOLLY
Lighted trees. Decorations. Carols. Presents. Parties. All there to enjoy. Yet, there are many suffering souls wearing happy faces for whom Christmas is filled with loneliness and loss. Maybe that manger is a reminder of the little one they no longer hold. There’s a tree they have to decorate themselves now because a spouse is no longer around. Old memories tear at their hearts – but they smile. Remember them. Bring them in. Most of all, Listen. Let them know the smile can fade to tears and you will still be there – listening. There is no time limit on grief. – © Geri Ehrlich

I love Geri Ehrlich! She has managed to beautifully articulate what my heart has felt for decades!

Yes, I can imagine Christmas without little ones quite well.  It’s a different kind of atmosphere, more quiet and solemn than most are used to.  There are no traditions that are set in stone and I guess that can be a good thing.  It’s a struggle to begin traditions when there are no children.  When there are no children to raise, there is no real purpose in starting traditions because let’s face it, we do what we do for the little ones.  It gives them roots before they need wings.

Couples who do not have children get to know one another very well.  There’s not any other focus besides your mate.  It’s not bad – just different.  I don’t ask why things happened the way they did.  I ask God to show me what He wants me to do next.  That’s always how I’ve dealt with loss.

So, when you are busy getting your jolly on this Christmas season, remember that some people find it a bit of a challenge to dive into Christmas events. For as Geri so aptly put it, “Maybe that manger is a reminder of the little one they no longer hold.” Some of us never got to hold them at all. I know without a doubt WHO DOES hold them though. One day I’ll see my little ones in heaven.  🙂

BUY A MUSICAL INSTRUMENT DAY

TL 5-22 BUY A MUSICAL INSTRUMENT DAY

https://youtu.be/XoNNfw93sVw

Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and to everything. – Plato

Today is BUY A MUSICAL INSTRUMENT DAY!!! What a temptation that would be, but I don’t want to go into that kind of debt now. When I bought my Clavinova it was a total GOD thing! I got paid one Friday and was looking through the classifieds in the newspaper. I rarely look at the paper, but that was the only reading material in the break room and I didn’t take a book to read. I spotted an ad – someone wanted to sell their nearly new Clavinova for only $1,000!!! My first question was, “What’s the catch?” I arranged to go look at the instrument and to my surprise, it really was all they claimed. The people were obviously well off and did not need money and wanted to sell the instrument quickly. I stood in the foyer (which you could land a plane in) and wrote the check! We loaded it up and it came home with me! Of course that transaction happened nearly ten years ago, but the Clavinova still works fine. It is not current in its technology – it uses discs to record. I’m not one to do a lot of recording, so it really does not bother me. I just like to play – and I enjoy all the different voices. It’s a lot of fun and how I unwind in the evening.

You must see your goals clearly and specifically before you can set out for them.  Hold them in your mind until they become second nature.  – Les Brown

The thing we give most of our time and attention to is the thing we love most.  For me, that is music.  Without a moment’s hesitation I say that music is my first love.  OK – second love.  Of course I love Jesus first.  Um…  ok music comes in a close 4th – after my family.

I’ve discovered “fake books” and love them.  When I play within the confines of traditional written music – the notes, staff, rhythm – I am simply playing what someone else has already written.  It is not my whole creation but rather an interpretation of the writer’s vision.  A fake book gives chords with no other instruction.  It allows the one playing to experiment with rhythms and be as creative as they feel like being on any given day.  One day I may want to play a simple tune, but the next day I may want to be a little more intricate in my playing.

I have several “fake books” and hardly touch my traditional music anymore.  I’ve always experimented with music, from hymns to jazz to blues.  I simply do not enjoy following the songwriter’s rules.  Rules were made to be broken, right?

Maybe you’re not ready to sink a wad of cash into a new instrument right now, but if you have not tried to play from a “fake book” yet, I invite you to give it a try.  Just buy one and give it a whirl.  I really think having the freedom to fill in the way you want to will give you a whole new appreciation for music!  Use your imagination and let those fingers fly!   😉

NATIONAL SCRABBLE DAY

TL 4-13 NATIONAL SCRABBLE DAY

Perfect earrings for today!

It’s not cheating – no, really it’s not. It’s a strategy. Ok, it may be far-end strategy, borderline cheating. Well, whatever it is, it works!

Today is National Scrabble Day! In honor of this day I want to let my friend know that the scribbling I do to throw her off her game is intentional. The pencil tapping and yawns are on purpose too. You’re just so easily distracted and it’s so much fun to do that to you!

We’ve been friends for such a long time, I’m sure the confession I make today won’t bother you in the least. I know you will just laugh at me – maybe punch my arm (ouch!) because that’s what real friends do. Of course, the next time we play Scrabble, you will probably tie me to the chair, hands unable to reach a pencil. No paper in front of me and duct tape over my mouth!

Let’s face it, friend… that’s the only way you could beat me!

I know we will be friends anyway because we understand that a game of Scrabble is not the most important thing in the world. It’s really not about the winning or the losing, but the friendship. I enjoy having friends that I can do absolutely nothing with and still have a good time, don’t you? The people we can relax and be comfortable with are the ones we treasure and look forward to spending time with.

My friend and I both love Jesus, we love Him and we love each other. We’ve worked on projects together and we have prayed together. So many years we’ve shared the ups and downs of this life. The good, the bad, and the Scrabble! You know, honestly, I think she lets me win. That would not surprise me in the least!

Happy National Scrabble Day! 🙂
