TL A COMMENTARY FROM THE HEART (22)How many times do we take everyday things for granted?  I know I do that way too often and I’m trying to do better.  My new diet has turned out to be more restrictive than I thought it would be.  I miss eating fruit because most fruit is extremely high in carbohydrates.  I recently typed in some of my favorites in a carb counter online – and my favorite fruit – apricots…  are only 4 grams of carbohydrates!fruit-808336_1920

I was so happy I did a happy dance all over the house!  Hopefully that burned a few calories – 😉

On this journey I’ve also decided that turkey bacon doesn’t taste at all like bacon.  😦  It’s okay because I’ve started eating Canadian bacon!   It is a low-carb and low calorie choice and a serving size is 5 slices!  It’s so good on an English muffin with egg and low-fat cheese.breakfast-713112_1920

Some mornings I begin the day with a protein shake.  I found whey protein powder at Walmart in chocolate flavor.  It’s so simple and quick to fix – just put a cup of liquid (I use low-fat milk) in the blender and add a scoop of powder.  It’s not very cold at that point, so I add 2 ice cubes to make it nice and thick and cold.  It also gets rid of that protein powder smell that some folks can’t get past.  It’s like drinking a thick chocolate milkshake for breakfast.  I thought I might get tired of them, but so far I really have enjoyed them!shake-677437_1920 (1)

I’m going to the gym and it’s another big praise to God – I have not injured my leg or back!  Sometimes if I try to do exercise, I mess with the neuropathy (nerve damage) and end up worse off than I was before.  I’m happy to report I’m doing well so far!  I enjoy Planet Fitness so much because there are signs all over the place like NO JUDGMENT ZONE and NO CRITICS.  I’m thinking…  exactly!  We’re all here just trying to do better, right?

The scale is moving – ever so slowly…  but in the right direction.  I pray that my appointment to get my A1c checked again in July will reflect my lifestyle changes.  I’m especially thankful to God that apricots only have 4 grams of carbohydrate each!  YAY!  Thank You, Lord!  🙂

THANKSGIVING

I asked my group, A Second Helping of Wellness…  with a Dash of Humor & a Pinch of Faith, to help me think of things they are thankful for.  This is what we came up with – enough to cover the entire page!

There are more things we thank God for, of course.  Even when our circumstances look so lonely and sad from outward appearances, we can still look up to God and thank Him for LIFE.  If we are breathing, we absolutely need to be grateful for that gift.

I thought it would be nice to share some cherished verses about thankfulness.  Some are very familiar, but a few may not be ones you would choose.  In any case, please take this opportunity to read them and meditate on them today.  🙂

NOVEMBER 18-24 IS NATIONAL FARM-CITY WEEK

Kansas is rich in agricultural traditions.  As you drive along our state’s highways you can’t help but notice the lovely quilt of farmland with the occasional horse, herds of cattle or sheep, and of course the state flower, the sunflower.

The farmers of Kansas provide food and other resources for the rest of the country.  It’s a proud heritage to be a farmer, but it certainly won’t make you rich.  Maybe it does make you rich, it’s just not from monetary gain.  There is a rich satisfaction in farming… knowing that you’ve done a good day’s work for your fellow-man is worth more than money.

You know when I think of a Kansas farm, I think of the Peterson Farm.  Those guys are crazy…  yep – they’re Kansans alright!

When I think of Thanksgiving, it’s natural to think of harvest.  I can’t imagine living in a big city where harvest is just a concept and not a reality.  Something about having harvest as a way of life just makes me more thankful than I would be otherwise.

A WORKING FARM

It’s a silly memory, I know…  but I remember taking field trips to my 5th grade teacher’s farm around this time of year.  Maybe it had to do with this holiday – who knows?

It’s important for children to be exposed to farm life once in a while.  They need to know that they’re milk comes from a cow and eggs come from chickens.  Some of those city kids might decide they want to move to a farm one day and enjoy a slower, more structured, simple life.

The only downside to farming is the butchering of livestock.  I know some don’t have a problem with it, but I’m just a bit of a squeamish soul, I suppose.  I thought it would be fun to have a herd of sheep and sell wool.  There is a new kind of farm emerging on the horizon that sounds interesting – Alpaca farms!  Alpaca fleece is softer than cashmere and is in demand.  As an alpaca farmer you can raise the animals and not have to butcher them – just shear them.  I think I could handle that!

I hope sometime this week you will take a city kid to visit a working farm – maybe even the Peterson farm!   The only way we can encourage kids to appreciate the food they eat is to show them where it comes from – and all the work involved in making it happen.  Have a great week!  🙂

When you think of the grace of God, how do you respond?  Do you sing?  Pray?  Praise?  Smile?  All of the above?  God’s grace is truly…  well – amazing!!! 

WHEN I THINK OF YOUR GRACE

When we perceive our spiritual blessings on a conscious level, it’s okay to take a moment to let God know how grateful we are for those supernatural gifts from Him.  Precious moments make us feel closer to God too, don’t they?  The other day, I was working on something in the living room while my husband was cooking in the kitchen.  I just had to take a moment to thank God for my blessings!

The more we thank God for blessings, the better our lives get.  How about giving your significant other a bear hug?  It’s a tiny act of love, but when you’ve been presented with a fantastic meal or a sweet compliment out of the blue – it’s a good idea to recognize such positive behavior.  We want it to continue, don’t we?  😉

God’s grace is the greatest of all blessings for all of mankind.  If not for His grace, we would be lost – literally.  Eternally lost.  So when we feel a flood of gratitude because of it – it’s a good thing!

Sometimes expressing thanks to God for all He’s done is like popping an anti-anxiety piece of chocolate after a stressful day at work.  It’s really better because the chocolate isn’t going to last, but when we sing, pray, praise and smile because of what God has done for us, it’s a lasting experience.  It seems to make every aspect of life that much better, doesn’t it?

Don’t wait for Thanksgiving to begin thanking God for His grace, mercy and love.  No one will ever love you like He does!  Count your blessings – big and small.  God has given us so much to be thankful for – and it takes more than just one day out of the year to thank Him sufficiently.  🙂

It’s Monday again and I’m still in pain.  Does it help to be grumpy and complain?  Um…  no.

 …give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.  – 1 Thessalonians 5:18

Is today Thanksgiving?  Well, shouldn’t we give thanks to the LORD every day?  It’s what God wants us to do.  It’s His will for our lives!  So yes, today is Thanksgiving!

Not only are we to be thankful people, but we are to give thanks to the LORD in all circumstances!  Oh – now the stew gets thick, doesn’t it?  I don’t always feel like being thankful.

IT'S MONDAY

Don’t you think that God knows we’re going to have difficulties and trials along the way?  Of course He does!  I believe He wants us to lean on His power and wisdom even more when the going gets tough.

We can gain even more perspective into this portion of Scripture if we expand a bit on it:

Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.  1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

While the seas are calm it’s easy to rely on our own thoughts and reason to get by.  I submit that as the seas are stormy, we need to hang on to Christ and His perfect timing even more!  My boat is rocking in a storm right now – and it’s a challenge to be joyful and pray continually, but I know that’s exactly what I need to do – and give thanks – no matter what.

Sometimes your joy is the source of your smile, but sometimes your smile can be the source of your joy.  – Thích Nhất Hạnh

God’s Holy Spirit is the source of joy, and joy makes me smile!  I know God has everything in His very capable hands.  Again it’s Monday, but it’s okay!  🙂

PRAYER ABOUT TREASURES

So if you reached into the treasure chest of God’s blessings, (which, by the way, never empties) how many blessings would you pull out? How many could you hold? Would you be shy and not want to take too many because you don’t want to appear selfish? Or, would you get a firm grip on every blessing you possibly could?

Well it’s Thanksgiving Day, and I pray for you every possible blessing from God’s endless bounty of blessings! Don’t be shy, step up and claim them from your Lord and humbly thank Him for His goodness to you! He wants only the best for His children. He loves us so much – we can’t even imagine.

The Psalmist, David, wrote this observation in God’s Holy Word, The Bible:

I was young and now I am old, yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken or their children begging bread. – Psalm 37:25

Have faith today that God will meet all your needs. This Thanksgiving you have so much to be grateful for. I know you already know that, but I’m reminding you of the obvious.

Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good; His love endures forever. – 1 Chronicles 16:34

PRAYER ABOUT PETS

On this Thanksgiving Eve I am spending time with my family. Casey has over 100 toys in his toy box, but one is special. About five years ago, we took a trip to Minneapolis, MN to visit the Mall of America, the largest mall in the country. Of course both our jaws dropped when we walked in and took in the size of the place – it’s simply astounding!

There is a store at the mall that sells novelty items for pets. We found a unique toy for Casey – it’s a duck. When you squeeze it or drop it on the floor, it quacks – not just once but about three times in a row! Do you think we were crazy for buying it? Oh – probably, but it was for our Casey, so we had to get it!

I’ve kept scrapbooks for Casey like other moms keep scrapbooks for their children. Sometimes I joke around that this is actually Casey’s house and he’s just letting us hang around as part of his pack. He calls the shots and yes, I do believe he is just a little spoiled.

Every dog has their own unique personality and Casey is no exception. He knows how to push our buttons, that’s for sure. I hope we are blessed to have him around for a long time. We’ve had a couple of scares with cancer and some arthritis, but in people years he is over 80. I hope I’m doing as well as he is when I am 80+.

Thank You, Lord, for our Casey. He brings happiness into our lives. ❤
