TL A COMMENTARY FROM THE HEART (26)sweet-sleepI have a praise to share with you today.  From this day forward, I plan to get a good night’s sleep!  God knows not only what we are in need of (before we even ask), but He is also aware of the desires of our hearts!  In other words…  He definitely knows what we need, but how cool is it that He also knows what we want?

We make our plans and God laughs, so they say.  I had surfed the internet in an effort to educate myself about various furniture manufacturers and to learn about the quality of their products.  I knew I had a certain budget to consider, and found a few possibilities.

Yes, I prayed that God would give us wisdom and a sense of which way to go as we shopped.  I am also aware of the fact that God’s not going to drop things in front of us – we have to get some idea of what we’re going to look for.

This is what I knew yesterday.  I knew our old mattress was going to kill me.  By that, I mean that if I had to sleep on that rock much longer, my body would crumble and become useless.  A rock is soft compared to our mattress – not joking.  People make fun of me for being on facebook or writing a post for this blog at midnight or after (um…  it’s after midnight right now – lol) – but seriously, this recliner is a big soft cuddly teddy bear compared to the rock bed.

I also knew that we needed to buy a couple of new recliners – pretty soon.  We sold our 12-year-old Laz-y Boys at the garage sale – and got a whopping $15 for the pair of them.  So, we’re not exactly working with profit here.

Those are the facts that I knew yesterday.

God knows more than I do…  as usual.  I’m trusting HIM for guidance.

So…  we’re shopping here and there.  I wanted furniture made in the USA.  Call me crazy…  but I want to support American workers.  We found a chair we liked at Ashley’s here in Wichita.  They make their own stuff here in America – and I like that!  But – when we told them we’d like two of the chairs, they made us an offer we just couldn’t pass up.

They told us if we’d buy a mattress, they would throw those two chairs in (yep – both of them) for FREE.  We were skeptical at first, but when we did the math, it sounded like a good deal – and we decided to go for it.  Is God good, or WHAT?

We didn’t tell the sales person at Ashley’s that we needed a mattress and a good night’s sleep, but guess what?  GOD knew the truth!  He takes such good care of us.

God cares about our sleep quality and quantity.  He wants us to be healthy and for our immune systems to be strong.  How does that happen?  It happens when we take care of ourselves with proper nutrition, regular exercise, and enough good quality sleep.  I look forward to some sweet sleep!  🙂

If you are not getting enough quality sleep at night, you may be at an increased risk for developing type 2 diabetes. When your body is sleeping, so is your pancreas. When you sleep, insulin levels drop and your metabolism (ability to burn and keep fat off) functions normally. If you stay awake at night, when you should be resting, and you eat late at night, your pancreas will never “shut off” and you’ll have a hard time managing your weight. Get a good 6-8 hours of quality sleep at night.

I wish I had known about the connection between melatonin levels and diabetes sooner!  I’ve been a night owl for years.  There’s just something about the quiet of night…  my brain seems to awaken and my writer’s imagination takes flight – anyone relate???  I think more clearly and do my best work between 10pm and 3am.  For the sake of my health, that will have to stop.  Now.

To be honest, anything I have to do to improve my health – I will gladly do.  Is this blog or any other writing worth losing my health over?  Um…  nope.

If you are a night owl and have diabetes type 2, I invite you to change your sleeping habits.  When research told us to limit carbs, we did.  When it told us to exercise more, we did.  When it told us to take extra vitamin B-12 along with our Metformin, we did.  Now there’s another rule that is for our own good, so we can live as well as we can – get to bed by 10pm and get a good night’s sleep.  Be kind to your pancreas.  Let it rest so it will work better when you’re awake.DEAR PANCREAS

In my defense, I didn’t eat when I stayed up late, but sometimes I did have a cup of tea to sip slowly as I wrote.  But as I said, as long as you are awake, your pancreas thinks it’s on duty regardless and it’s not at rest.

I appreciate being as well-informed as possible because information is POWER.  I like being armed with as much information as possible in this battle, don’t you?  My night owl writing ends tonight.  I’m going to be in bed by 10pm.

Can I imagine myself as a morning person?  Hmm…  not today – but give it time…  I’ll get there!  🙂

Does anyone have the number for heaven?  I would really like to call my mom and dad today!

I want to tell them how much fun I’ve had this week and how much I appreciate the lessons they taught me.  Daddy always told me to be aware of my surroundings at all times.  I believe that lesson kept me from harm’s way last night.

We were traveling home and stopped at a well-lit, popular and seemingly busy truck stop in another state last night.  I went in and headed for the women’s restroom.  Ahead of me, I noticed a man standing in the narrow hallway.  He did not appear to be going in to the men’s restroom, nor did he appear to be leaving it.  He was just standing there, leaning against the wall.

Something told me to wait…  so I stopped in my tracks and did an about-face, heading toward the grocery section of the store.  I pretended to need something, but was of course, watching the actions of the man.

I thought maybe he was waiting on someone – but nobody came out.  It seems like he stood there for several minutes (my poor bladder was convinced he stood there an hour).  I never felt it was safe to go back there.  My instincts kicked in…  the instincts my father instilled in me.  The instincts my heavenly Father helps me to remember.

I prayed that no other woman would walk back there – and that prayer was answered.  I got tired of waiting for him to leave, so I went to the clerk and told him about my concern.  I didn’t want to get an innocent man in trouble, but I didn’t want to assume he was innocent and live to regret it if he wasn’t.

God’s Holy Spirit helps me to use wisdom at times like this.  I praise Him for that and thank Him for giving me a dad who taught me to be observant of my surroundings at all times.

Was I being paranoid?  I’ll never know, but I got home from vacation safely.  I want to encourage you to listen to the little voice inside that tells you that something doesn’t look right.  If you see someone who is neither coming or going from a restroom, that’s not normal.  If there seems to be no good reason for a person to be there, they are probably up to no good.

At any rate, I had a very good time and would love to call my folks and tell them all about it.  Wouldn’t that be nice?  I always talked about vacations with my mom.  I used to call her on the phone from the motel – yeah, wish I could do that again.

I have wanted wrought iron shelving to organize my “coffee” stuff for so many years.  I found it at a quaint little shop in Dresden, OH.  I decided to get one for the kitchen upstairs and one for the bar downstairs!  I’m so tickled with this find.  We found other things too, of course, but the shelving was something I’ve wanted for a long time.

There was one piece of sad news from the Longaberger Homestead.  They have closed Crawford Barn because the furnace exploded!  All of the basket making is done in the main building now.

It’s great to get away, but wonderful to be back home.  We’re so thankful for traveling mercies and that God brought us home safe and sound.  🙂

Did you hear fireworks until after midnight last night?  We did!  So, you must forgive me because I’m writing in a fog and sleep-deprived state of mind – lol.

Speaking of sleep…  ah – yes – let’s speak of sleep!!!

I have some ideas about getting your zzz’s…  these tips came in handy for me and I hope they help you too!  🙂

  • Every day around 3pm when you begin to doze off at work, you obviously cannot take a nap (but dream of it – yes, you do) – eat an orange!  The citrus scent will perk you up, and the orange contains energy boosting “good” carbohydrates.
  • Whether you work or are retired, there are nights when your mind just won’t shut down!  It’s a frustrating feeling.  You walk around the house saying, “It’s time to sleep.  What is the matter with you?”  I’ve learned that I need to begin winding down about a half hour before I plan to go to bed.  Especially as I get older, I have to back up my words with actions in order to get my body to respond in a positive way.
  • These days I carve out time for an afternoon nap.  Yes, just like Kindergarten, I curl up on my little woven rug and say good-bye to the world for about an hour or so.  We make time for the things that matter most.  In my book – that is definitely replenishing sleep.
  • Is it rude for me to sleep on a trip while my husband is driving?  It doesn’t seem to bother him, so I don’t worry about it.  If I steal some rest during a trip that’s okay with me.
  • Instead of reaching for a nighttime sleep aid (which may be habit-forming), try eating a handful of nuts before you begin your routine and go to bed.  By the time you hit the sheets, you will probably be ready to sleep.

Getting a good night’s sleep is important for our bodies.  That’s when we replenish and revive.  Here’s to a good night’s sleep (and maybe even a nap tomorrow).  🙂

NAPPING DAY

Today do you feel a little jet lag?  We set our clocks ahead one hour, we lost an hour of sleep.  We showed up at church in desperate need of a nap, eagerly awaiting that Sunday afternoon nap.  Did you get one?  I know, me neither.

3-9 YOU KNOW YOU NEED A NAP

But guess what today is?  It’s NAPPING DAY!  Of course my priorities are perfect because I took my nap first and wrote about it later – LOL!  I have my hour back – yay!  We really need to get plenty of rest, and naturally that starts with getting to bed at a good hour and sleeping for around 8 hours.

There are 3 types of naps.

Planned napping (also called preparatory napping) involves taking a nap before you actually get sleepy. You may use this technique when you know that you will be up later than your normal bed time or as a mechanism to ward off getting tired earlier.

Emergency napping occurs when you are suddenly very tired and cannot continue with the activity you were originally engaged in. This type of nap can be used to combat drowsy driving or fatigue while using heavy and dangerous machinery.

Habitual napping is practiced when a person takes a nap at the same time each day. Young children may fall asleep at about the same time each afternoon or an adult might take a short nap after lunch each day.

Daylight Savings time is wonderful – and I wish we didn’t have to “fall back” later on.  But I don’t make the rules.  The older I get, the more I need consistency in everything, including my sleep patterns.  Sleep is probably the most healthy thing we do.

  • Naps improve your mood and performance
  • Naps reduce the risk of death from heart-related problems.
  • Naps as long as two hours a day by the people of Spain

WHEN YOU JUST WANT TO GO TO SLEEP

I don’t like being a crabby old lady and I sure don’t want to die because of lack of sleep.  I decided to play it safe today and sleep for a while.  I don’t take two-hour naps, but I did sleep for about an hour.  Now that I’m retired, I nap habitually.  I sleep for about 20-30 minutes every afternoon.  It makes me much MUCH easier to live with!  Wink!  😉

Today is the NATIONAL DAY OF UNPLUGGING.  For 24 hours we are encouraged to lay down all technology and do something that we are unaccustomed to…  REST!

I am a firm believer in rest – naps – relaxing – taking a break.  So…  I am writing this post now (in January) to let you know I will be resting for the next 24 hours.  There won’t be a post tomorrow, but I will return with a new post on March 8th.

“You can always do more.  But if you do too much, they won’t get your best.”  My college roommate’s father, a third-grade teacher, told me this during my first year of teaching.  I was staying late every night and getting burned out.  He helped me accept that I couldn’t chase down every lesson idea or write sentences of explanation for each error.  It gave me the freedom to focus on interaction with kids.  That’s made all the difference.  – Sean McComb

What do you need to do?  Well, I suggest you stop reading this and go REST.  Rest your thumbs so they don’t get arthritis prematurely.  Take a walk and leave your cell phone at home.  No texting.  If you turn your laptop and desktop off completely then you’ll be less tempted to check email or anything else.

Will you celebrate this time of rest with me?  Thinkin’ this guy won’t.

How much more dependent on technology are we in 2015 than we were in 2014?  Is it getting worse?  Is it a generational thing?  Well, of course it is!  When I was a kid I knew how to entertain myself with some of my dad’s old boards, some glue and some of my mom’s leftover yarn!  I used to sit for hours at the kitchen table, creating abstract works of art with these mediums!  Some of them were really quite GROOVY!  LOL!!!

The young people were born into technology and cannot imagine having to use their own imaginations to entertain themselves.  It’s all about communication with them!  The bad news is, they don’t have much inner vision.  The good news is, we are raising great communicators!!!  That’s not a bad thing in the workplace!

I’m guessing most of my followers are over 20 years of age, so maybe my plea will not fall on deaf ears.  LOL!!!  Let’s go out and enjoy the real world around us – for just 24 hours.  Prove that you can be connected with those who actually live in your world.  You may learn something you would not have learned about them otherwise, you never know.  Wink!  😉

GIVE IT TO GOD AND GO PLANT PANSIES

Today is GARDEN MEDITATION DAY!!! I want to discuss pain management.  I’ve tried several different methods to manage pain, one of them being meditation.

I tend to be ultra conservative when it comes to pain management.  I avoid pain killers prescribed by healthcare professionals. I don’t like feeling brain fog. I need to be sharp to write effectively. Meditation, prayer and time alone with God seem to take me away from the pain and get my mind focused elsewhere.  

Stress and pain are closely intertwined.  When your body is tense and stressed, the key to getting relaxed and releasing the tension is meditation.  I was advised against two types of meditation by my doctor since I was the victim of domestic abuse.  Hypnosis and transcendental meditation.  Both of these involve the complete clearing of your mind, basically giving another person (or whatever) control.  In hypnosis you are trusting another person and in TM you are just clearing your mind completely.  I’m not comfortable with that.  

The Buddhist’s “mindfulness meditation” requires that you focus as opposed to empty your mind. I am a Christian, so I choose to focus on God’s Word and in particular, the Psalms.  There I find strength, joy and peace.  I also find that quiet time and prayer are beneficial for me.  When I’m in a proper frame of mind, it helps me have a better attitude even when my pain level is quite high.  I also find that a cup of hot tea and some Green Hill music playing softly helps.

Remember, we are talking about chronic pain which means the pain never subsides, but is continuous.  If there is something that can break up or interrupt the pain with even a bit of relief, that is welcome!  If you can find something to make you feel even a little better, it is worth doing.  Nothing will ever take the pain away completely, but meditation can help.  Choose your meditation wisely.  Make sure you trust the one you give control of your mind to.

By the way, I do not believe in yoga either. The Om is another invitation to empty your mind, which is attractive to many Christians, but I believe while your mind is empty anything can get in there. I know I may stand alone in that opinion, but it is what I believe. There are wondrous ways to relax with the Lord. Invite Him to help you de-stress. He hears every prayer and no prayer is insignificant. Not even the one that says, “Lord, please help me to RELAX!” Yes, I have prayed that one. He hears it.  Wink!  😉
