Hip2save.com have compiled quite a list of freebies and discounts for veterans and active military!  Check them out here:  http://hip2save.com/2016/11/09/veterans-day-2016-freebies-and-deals/

November 11, 1919 was proclaimed the first commemoration of Armistice Day.  After World War II the name was changed to Veterans Day.

To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations…  – President Wilson

Originally the day was to be observed with parades and public meetings, along with a brief suspension of business beginning at 11:00 a.m.

These days we don’t see many parades or public meetings…  and nobody suspends business…  ever.  Today, businesses offer veterans discounts and freebies!

The idea is to show appreciation to a veteran – not just today…  but everyday!   It’s amazing what a simple THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE does for someone who has made a sacrifice for this country.freedom-to-praise-himThose who fought for our freedoms deserve our respect.

The willingness of America’s veterans to sacrifice for our country has earned them our lasting gratitude.  – Jeff Miller

Honoring the sacrifices many have made for our country in the name of freedom and democracy is the very foundation of Veterans Day.  – Charles B. Rangel

Whatever your plans for today…  we do want to say THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE!  We enjoy our freedom because of the sacrifice you’ve made.  🙂the-meaning-of-honor

WE DON'T BOW BEFORE A FLAG

https://youtu.be/HQJPEQwpK0E

On June 22, 1942, Congress passed a joint resolution, later amended on December 22, 1942, that encompassed what has come to be known as the U.S. Flag Code.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Flag_Code

They call Chicago the windy city, but we have our share of high wind in Wichita.  Awhile back, I was sitting in the truck waiting for my husband at a McDonald’s.  You know how it is, you don’t have much to look at and you notice things that you probably would not pay attention to if you were not bored and waiting.  I took a good look at the American flag and the McDonald’s flag.

Maybe this bothered me so much because we just celebrated FLAG DAY.  The flags looked absolutely horrendous!  They were tattered and torn.  There were strips of fabric hanging off the edges of both flags.  The American flag looked as though it was time to burn it and replace it.  I don’t think the McDonald’s flag has to be burned – does it?  Maybe just toss that flag with no ceremony.  Eat a Big Mac in its honor, or something.  😉

But as I said…  it’s probably not something that anyone else (including the employees) would even take notice of.

I went beyond mumbling under my breath about it.  I decided to go back to the McDonald’s and speak with the manager.  Amazingly, I was greeted with a great deal of respect.  I’m sure he thought I was there to complain about the last happy meal I ordered – but no, this complaint is of a more serious nature.

He remained engaged and interested even after learning of my concern.  He appreciated me pointing out the condition of both flags and agreed that the employees get so busy they rarely look up at them.  I told him I totally understand that everyone gets busy and focused on the task at hand.  We forget to look up, don’t we?

Now I’ll wait and see if anything changes.  I will see if the flags get replaced or if they continue to disintegrate on the pole.  I did what I thought was right.  What more could I do?  🙂

Praise the Lord, who is my rock.  He trains my hands for war and gives my fingers skill for battle. He is my loving ally and my fortress, my tower of safety, my rescuer.  He is my shield, and I take refuge in him.  Psalm 144:1-2

That we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain; that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom; and that government, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.  – Abraham Lincoln, Gettysburg Address, 1863

Precious Heavenly Father,

As Americans pause today to remember those in the military who have given their lives for the freedom we enjoy, we pray You would remind us to look to You for strength, comfort and guidance.  Be close to all who serve in our Armed Forces.  Bless them and their loved ones.  Grant them with Your loving protection and let peace prevail among the nations, O God.  Let Your mercy rest upon our land, even as we acknowledge with thanksgiving Your blessings on America in the past.  We pray Your perfect will be done in all our lives, and that our men and women in uniform be protected by Your Almighty hand.  We pray You turn both military and civilian hearts to Your holy Word where true peace for sinful souls exceeds all human understanding.  May we repent of sin and walk so closely to You, Lord, and find Your saving grace on a daily basis.  It’s in the matchless name of Jesus, our Savior and Your beloved Son, who alone gives this peace and hope for eternity, we pray,

Amen.

Customs surrounding Memorial Day have changed so much since it began back during the Civil War.  For starters, it was first known as Decoration Day and was not always observed on the last Monday of May.  We should try to keep some decorum though, I believe.  Our society has become so casual – and we need to know the “do’s and don’ts” about Memorial Day.

General Orders No. 11 stated that “in this observance no form of ceremony is prescribed,” but over time several customs and symbols became associated with the holiday.

• It is customary on Memorial Day to fly the flag at half-staff until noon, and then raise it to the top of the staff until sunset.

• Taps, the 24-note bugle call, is played at all military funerals and memorial services. It originated in 1862 when Union Gen. Dan Butterfield “grew tired of the ‘lights out’ call sounded at the end of each day,” according to The Washington Post. Together with the brigade bugler, Butterfield made some changes to the tune.

Not long after, the melody was used at a burial for the first time when a battery commander ordered it played in lieu of the customary three rifle volleys over the grave. The battery was so close to enemy lines, and the commander was worried the shots would spark renewed fighting.

• The World War I poem “In Flanders Fields,” by John McCrea, inspired the Memorial Day custom of wearing red artificial poppies. In 1915, a Georgia teacher and volunteer war worker named Moina Michael began a campaign to make the poppy a symbol of tribute to veterans and for “keeping the faith with all who died.” The sale of poppies has supported the work of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

I have to admit, I did not know about the poppies.  It’s important that we learn about customs so we can keep them alive.  🙂

ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY

TL ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY (3)On this day in 1863, President Abraham Lincoln signed this:

http://www.abrahamlincolnonline.org/lincoln/speeches/fast.htm

Could you imagine a President of such moral fiber in the White House today?  How refreshing would it be to have a Commander and Chief with values and backbone instead of one who seems to want as much party as possible with no regard whatsoever for the country he represents and supposedly protects?

Then if my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and restore their land.  – 2 Chronicles 7:14

Hmm…  a day of fasting and humility.  You know – that’s not such a bad idea, fellow believers.  Have you seen the GOP race lately?  Have you seen the horses in that race?  I rest my case.  We need God to help us now more than ever!  This is not a political blog and never will be – but as a Christian who happens to live in America, I naturally have some interest in this election season.

When I saw 19 people running for President, I thought, “no way – this isn’t good!”  We’re still not in a good way with a two-man race and one spoiler.  I’ll let you determine which one is the spoiler – I have my own opinions on that.

If the race doesn’t narrow more, the convention could be dicey to say the least.  We’re gonna mess around and lose the general altogether – let’s pray in unity that God will smack some wisdom into the GOP candidates, and fast!  OK, maybe smack isn’t the right term.  No, wait…  it may be the perfect term.

But back to Abraham Lincoln and legislation.  A day of prayer and fasting.  The actual day is April 30th, but he signed it into law on March 30th.  It was a time when the morals and values of Christianity were not that far away from the morals and values of Americans.  What happened?  Well, people were given the gift of free will, and chose to separate themselves from Christian values and beliefs.  They began picking up their philosophies and lifestyles from other religions – or no religion at all.

Solomon, the wisest man who ever lived, had something to say about little foxes and vineyards filled with tender grapes:

Catch for us the foxes, the little foxes that ruin the vineyards, our vineyards that are in bloom.  Song of Solomon 2:15

The King James version says “Our grapes are tender”.  It means that little things that seem almost harmless can be the things that trip us up along the way – like the little foxes that get in the vineyard and eat all the tender young grapes.  The little things that seem so minor can lead to the worst mess.

It seemed so innocent when people started doing yoga, didn’t it?  You do a few poses and clear your mind of everything – but if you clear your mind – of everything, even God – that makes room for the enemy to come in.  It’s true.  But what’s the harm in adopting just that one thing – can I do yoga and still be a Christian?  Some say of course – it’s just a little thing.  It’s just one little fox.  And besides, isn’t it God’s will that we have a healthy body?  I don’t argue that, but it’s not His will that you sit still with an empty mind.  He wants your thoughts to be on Him.  He’s a jealous God – He wants to have first place, or no place at all.

Colorado has legalized pot – but it’s not big deal.  Can I be high as a kite and then get behind the wheel to drive?  Sure, why not?  If you hit someone and kill them, you’ll probably just walk away with minor injuries.  You’ll be so out of it you won’t know what hit you.  Chill out – it’s just a little thing. It’s just one little fox.  And besides, there are people suffering who need pot for their pain.  I don’t argue that, but not everyone is in pain.  Those who are should not be allowed to be on the road driving so that other innocent people get hurt or killed.

Unplanned pregnancy?  Bummer – just get rid of it.  Easy come, easy go – no big deal.  Life is cheap – you can always have another baby when you’re ready, right?  Don’t let anybody take away your rights because you’ve got that power to choose – pro-choice – because that fetus…  well it’s just a little thing.  It’s just one little fox.  And besides, it’s not really a human being yet, right?  It’s not really a life yet.  I do argue that – America condones the killing of innocent life and will not receive the blessing of God until that is changed.  I don’t give a flying flip about the mother’s RIGHTS…  if you’re irresponsible enough to have unprotected sex, then guess what?  If you conceive a life – there are other options – and they are less selfish ones.  Adoption is perfect because there are people who would love to raise that child.  Be smarter about how you deal with unplanned pregnancy – sheesh!!!  Put an end to the murder of innocents – it’s barbaric and so beneath us!

Don’t be such a stick in the mud – don’t be such a square – and really, those Bible verses you quote are giving me one ginormous migraine.  And don’t judge me until you’re sure you’re perfect.

Yeah – well hold the phone…  let’s just get that straight here and now.  Nobody’s perfect.  That’s why we all need a Savior.  WHOSOEVER…  it’s you and me and everyone.  Jesus died for every one of us.  Accept it or deny it…  that’s on you.

God wants better for all of us – He can help us overcome the things we’ve tagged as little things – our little foxes – the things that can appear to be chinks in the armor.  We all get chinks once in a while – and through Christ, God can and will forgive those if we ask with a sincere heart.  There’s not one sin that God will not forgive!

But America…  seriously – we need to have a day of fasting and humility.  We need to hit our knees and pray like we’ve never prayed before for our beautiful America.  We are at a crossroads and we need God’s help!  I know we are a proud people – but we need to humble ourselves before the Almighty and turn from our sin and ask Him to heal our land.  ❤

A COMMENTARY FROM THE HEART

TL A COMMENTARY FROM THE HEART (23)SOCIALISMLEARN ABOUT SOCIALISM

I’m old enough to remember when the words socialism and communism were regarded as evil in the United states.  The freedoms and capitalism our country was founded on were to be guarded and protected above everything else.

Democracy is two wolves and a lamb deciding what to have for dinner. Liberty is a well-armed lamb.  – Benjamin Franklin

Since I don’t have children, I’m not up to speed on what is being taught in the school system, but it’s my suspicion that history lessons are not at the top of the list…  am I right?  A couple of encounters with the youth of Wichita, Kansas has shown me that they are not well-rounded in their knowledge of history.  People, if we don’t know where we came from and learn from past mistakes – we are surely bound to repeat them!

The socialist candidate makes it all sound so appealing, doesn’t he?  He’s going to GIVE some folks everything at no cost – well, isn’t that special???  Guess what…  A college education will still cost somebody – do they care about that?  Somebody’s taxes will go sky-high through the roof to GIVE others everything for free.  Does that matter?  Raising taxes by as much as 98% which is just crazy…  to GIVE a college education to another.

There is something in the capitalist world that accomplishes the same thing – they’re called SCHOLARSHIPS.  There are scholarships by the truckload that yes, have to be EARNED, but if you want a healthy chunk of your college education paid for – that’s possible in a capitalist nation!  No, nobody is going to give you a free lunch – because as my mother always told me – there’s no such thing as a FREE lunch.  Somebody is going to pay for the lunch – please remember that.

DIE FOR YOU

I love America, I love my freedom AND I want to uphold our precious CONSTITUTION.  Never in the history of this country has there been a socialist running for president.  I don’t want to feel the Bern…  our country would soon feel the burn from the Bern.  The insane part is that he’s not even a registered democrat…  huh???  How does that happen???

Look, I’m just asking that you have all the facts about Socialism before you vote.  As always, it’s my prayer that we are less red, less blue – and blend into a united purple as we kneel in prayer before our GOD to seek His face and turn from our wicked ways – only then will our sin-sick nation be supernaturally healed.

PRAYER FOR AMERICABe an informed voter.  Please read about the practice of SOCIALISM in other countries and pray in these last days before the election.  🙂

TL PROVERBS 11 11 ON 11 11

A city is exalted by the blessing provided from the upright, but it is destroyed by the counsel of the wicked.  – Proverbs 11:11

This Veteran’s Day I’m thinking about the raw deal many of our veteran’s have gotten and how ashamed I am of our government.  I won’t rehash the bad news as I’m sure you have read about it too.

I’m praying that our nation will be blessed by God and led by competent and godly individuals – instead of destroyed by the counsel of the wicked.  I know we’re all busy people, but we need to be following politics closer in this election cycle than we ever have before.

KEEP YOUR CHIN UP

I know we’re looking for a president who will undertake a lot of issues – a 18 trillion-dollar debt (I can’t even count that high), terror that could quite possibly show its ugly head on U.S. soil – (it may have already done so), and the southern border problem.  I also think we should be looking for a president who will make our veterans a priority once again.  Obviously, the vets have not been well cared for – many died waiting to be cared for at VA hospitals across the nation.  That is a disgrace, America!

There are homeless vets and those who just need a little help.  I’m sure you’ve seen the same posts on facebook that I’ve seen – the ones that say you wish we would pay our military better money than we do a football player.  I agree with that!

I am thankful for the Wounded Warrior Project.  That is a great organization for sure.  http://www.woundedwarriorproject.org/

https://youtu.be/dcZVJsU5wtI

I pray that America’s freedom will remain intact and that we will be a great nation once again.  Whether or not you like Donald Trump, you must admit he is right about one thing…  we don’t have victories anymore.  We are not a leader in the world and it’s the first time in our nation’s history that we have sat back and let other world powers run over us.

So let’s really get serious about praying about who we want to be president!  Seek God about it.  Of course, we know no matter who is president, Jesus is KING!  But it matters who our leaders are because it will determine whether we go toward a progressive communism or a conservative freedom.  and yes… Yes God…  we need YOU in America again!  🙂

FREE SPEECH WEEK

TL 10-19 - 25 IS FREE SPEECH WEEK

Free Speech Week is a yearly even to raise awareness of the importance of free speech in the United States.  So far our government has not over-reached to the point where they tell me I can’t talk about God, Jesus, the Bible and Christian faith.  I wouldn’t say that’s something I take for granted, because I still read articles about the Ten Commandments being removed from the wall of a courthouse in Oklahoma – or Wichita State University removing all the Christian religious symbols in the chapel to make it more Muslim-friendly.  So, I would be mistaken to say my religious freedom and freedom of speech will never be threatened.  In my opinion, it has been threatened.  I don’t like it – go figure…  duh!  I’m offended because the core of Christianity is the death of Christ Jesus on the cross, His death, burial and resurrection is what my faith is all about – yeah – removing the crosses and pews in the chapel really chaps my hide!

Do you agree?
Do you agree?

While all people should be equal no matter what, to infringe on other’s religious rights is not fair – I’m free to say that…  and just did.

As freedom of speech is a right all American’s share, this non-partisan, non-ideological event is intended to be a unifying celebration.

http://www.kansas.com/news/local/education/article38035449.html

This is more like it
Pretty much

I’m not using my freedom of speech to unite – sorry.  I’m tired of being pushed around because I am a Christian.

There must be middle ground.  Why do Muslims have to be so offended when they see something that does not line up with their beliefs?  I mean, I have to drive past a Muslim place of worship practically every day – and yes, they drive past several churches.  But to remove the crosses and pews from the chapel at WSU to make Muslim students more comfortable???  Why can’t the Muslim students just deal with it – they are in a country that is predominately Christian.  Those crosses and pews will not jump out and hurt them.  They need to be just as TOLERANT of my Christian belief as I am of their Muslim faith.  I drive by their place of worship – I’m not going to say it offends me and demand that it be torn down.  I won’t go inside, but I understand they have a RIGHT to worship as they please – in their own place of worship.  Leave my Christian chapel alone.

Why can’t WSU build a separate little place to pray JUST FOR THE MUSLIM STUDENTS instead of taking away all of the things the remind me of the sacrifice that my Jesus made for all the world?  If the Muslim outrage is so overwhelming – get the money from the Muslims to build it.  If we are offending them so much – give in – but don’t desecrate my Christian chapel to make it more user-friendly for Muslims!  I’m not trying to be ugly – I’m just disappointed in WSU because once again my faith is being squashed on campus.  Do Christian students not matter to WSU anymore?  We used to matter.  Maybe it’s about money.  I don’t know.  I’ll bet if I went to their homeland – they would not make such changes if I felt uncomfortable.  What is wrong with us, people???  Do we as Christians not have a backbone?  Are we just going to sit back and let this stuff keep happening?  I’m thankful that in America there is a week when I can let my opinions be known.  I’m so thankful for my FREEDOM OF SPEECH.

No true Christian wants to offend anyone on purpose.  Most of us try to walk humbly with our God and just get along with those around us – and we usually bend over backwards to make things better.  All we want is for others to let us be – leave the pews in the chapel and put the crosses back up on the walls.  If it’s a chapel for Christians – then those things are appropriate in there!  I don’t expect everyone to believe just like I do, but Christians – we need to find our voice or we’re gonna get run over!  It happened on our university campus – it can happen anywhere – trust me.  Don’t we care?

Well, I’ve had my say because I’m celebrating Free Speech Week.  🙂
