PRAIRIE DAY

TL 9-13 PRAIRIE DAY

9-13 STATE FAIR

It’s PRAIRIE DAY and we celebrated big this year!

Our Kansas State Fair in Hutchinson, KS is in full swing and the party on the prairie is a great place to go for a fun learning experience.

Today was Heritage Farming Day at the fair. Beginning at 8am there was a 4-H/FFA dairy goat judging at the Sheep, Swine and Goat Building. That’s not really our thing, so we went over to the Expo Center to watch the 4-H Horse Show. Horses are such large creatures, yet they were so graceful and amazing. We don’t spend much time in the Sheep, Swine and Goat Building. If I have to explain why, you are obviously not familiar with the downside of farming.

We watched the 4-H demonstrations over at the 4-H Centennial Hall for a while, then took a walk over to Dr. Goddard’s Lab at the Do Art Building. I enjoy the Exotic Animal Petting Zoo, so we spent a little time there. I left with all my digits intact, so I feel very blessed.

I’m convinced that a person has not lived until they have at least watched one pig race. Yep – that was a hoot, like it is every year!

It’s fun to see the Antique Farm Machinery Show. Technology has brought farming a long way. Oh, and we had to watch the “Give a Chicken a Bath” demonstration in the Poultry Building. I thought it was fun giving my dog a bath. Oh… pleeeeze!

We caught just a few moments of Glenda & Mike’s Magic Show at the Nex-Tech Wireless Stage. Have you ever seen a guy carve wood with a chainsaw? It’s quite a sight! It’s like whittling on steroids! Of course, no trip to the fair is complete without junk food for lunch. We always get a Pronto Pup and it’s one of the few times I give myself permission to have a soda.

While we sat at the nearly clean picnic table, I did some people watching. You see everything on the fair grounds – and at the local Wal-Mart. Jus’ sayin’…

We just walked around a little, then watched the Simental Beef Cattle Judging at the Prairie Pavilion. We didn’t stay there long – it got boring. We watched the Milking Demonstration at the Milking Parlor for a while.

My Pronto Pup was making me sleepy and my feet were getting tired. We sat down to listen to an outdoor concert for a while. I can’t remember who was singing, but he was sure good. I’ll be honest, that bench sure felt good.

We wandered around aimlessly for a while, looking at the goods for sale along the midway. We went into the Young Injury Lawyers Arena for a Quilt Auction for the quilt made from 2013 Quilt Block contest entries. I wish I could have bid on it because it was so pretty.

I admire people who can quilt, or can, or grow things. I have absolutely no inclination in that “domestic” direction whatsoever. I write and play music, neither of which will come in handy if my family is starving or cold.

We debated about staying to hear the Show Choir and watch Disney’s “Frozen”, but decided we still had a drive ahead of us to get back to Wichita, so we left.

It was quite a day at our Kansas State Fair! 🙂

WORLD JUMP DAY

TL 7-20 WORLD JUMP DAY

7-20 WHAT'S JUMPING

There is no sound judgment or science to back this theory – but it was thought that if everyone began jumping for 2 minutes straight at a synchronized time – it would knock the earth off its axis.  Newsflash – not gonna happen.  I’ll tell you what some benefits of jumping today are:

Weight Loss  Hey – it’s good exercise.  It would look less silly if you were jumping a rope or doing jumping jacks, but if you jump non-stop for a couple of minutes it could only be a positive move.

Wake Up Some of us just blindly waddle to the bathroom and waddle blindly to the coffee maker.  The chances of your eyes opening wide and your brain thinking clearly improve when you have engaged in some physical activity.

Reason to Laugh Make plans with someone to jump for 2 minutes today.  As you watch your friend you cannot help but bust out laughing!  That alone should help you have a better day.

Making a Memory If you decide to be a part of this celebration, make sure somebody has a camera!  What a fun photo to put in a scrapbook!

Choose a Special Location If you have a group of folks from your church, why not meet at the church to do the jumping?  You can always bring a snack and have a brunch afterwards.  Hey – any excuse to eat at church, right?

Here’s a great song to jump to:

So maybe we won’t shift the orbit of planet Earth, stop global warming, extend daytime hours or create a more homogenous climate, but it will still be a fun time!  If 600 million folks jump up and down for 2 minutes it really won’t make a big change to the planet, but it might put you in a better mood to face the day!  Some call it a hoax, but I just think it’s all in good fun.  😉

CHICK-FIL-A’S COW APPRECIATION DAY

TL 7-11 CHICK-FIL-A'S COW APPRECIATION DAY

7-11 RISE ABOVE

The theme of the Christian life is based on forgiveness.  Once you are at peace with all around you, it’s time to enjoy life and have some fun.  Today is the day to dress up like a cow and go to Chick-fil-A for a free sandwich.  It’s amazing how much more fun life can be once the air is cleared.

To harbor a grudge against someone is to allow them to live rent-free in your mind. When people hurt us or make us angry, we often hold on to those feelings for a long time. Have you ever asked yourself why you can’t let something go when you need to? I wonder if God is trying to help us get tougher and maybe wiser at the same time.

To you who are ready for the truth, I say this: Love your enemies. Let them bring out the best in you, not the worst. When someone gives you a hard time, respond with the energies of prayer for that person. If someone slaps you in the face, stand there and take it. If someone grabs your shirt, giftwrap your best coat and make a present of it. If someone takes unfair advantage of you, use the occasion to practice the servant life. No more tit-for-tat stuff. Live generously. Here is a simple rule of thumb for behavior: Ask yourself what you want people to do for you; then grab the initiative and do it for them! If you only love the lovable, do you expect a pat on the back? Run-of-the-mill sinners do that. If you only help those who help you, do you expect a medal? Garden-variety sinners do that. If you only give for what you hope to get out of it, do you think that’s charity? The stingiest of pawnbrokers does that. I tell you, love your enemies. Help and give without expecting a return. You’ll never—I promise—regret it. Live out this God-created identity the way our Father lives toward us, generously and graciously, even when we’re at our worst. Our Father is kind; you be kind. – Luke 6:27-36

It takes a degree of maturity to obey and pray for those who hate you. Once you begin to pray for someone, you can never hate them again. Hate turns to pity and you are then able to love that person with genuine compassion that comes from God.  Eventually you might even be able to invite them to go to Chick-fil-A with you for COW APPRECIATION DAY.

It’s a challenge, but we have to forgive because we have been forgiven by our Lord. ❤

HOME IMPROVEMENTS
Oh the joys of home ownership! It seems like yesterday we were enjoying our custom-built home. Suddenly, nine years passed, and we are in the “home improvement” stage.

Good for the body is the work of the body, and good for the soul is the work of the soul, and good for either is the work of the other. – Henry David Thoreau

I admit, I enjoy home improvement. I like seeing things look and work better than they did before. The part that is not so great is the cost of home improvement.

I thought the worst news I could hear was that the cost of coffee was going up. I was wrong. We got an estimate on house repairs about this time last year and had one set of figures in mind, but this year the cost was much higher. I suppose some of that increase is due to the rising cost of gas and other materials needed to do the job.

In spite of the cost of living, it’s still popular. – Kathy Norris

Lord willin’ and the creek don’t rise, we plan to have the exterior of our house replaced and sealed properly against the rain. Our original exterior was not properly sealed which resulted in some wood rot. I could use a little “Home Improvement” right now.  Of course, I mean the TV show.  You can watch episodes on You Tube.  I can’t post them here.

Home is the one place in all this world where hearts are sure of each other. It is the place of confidence. It is the place where we tear off that mask of guarded and suspicious coldness which the world forces us to wear in self-defense, and where we pour out the unreserved communications of full and confiding hearts. It is the spot where expressions of tenderness gush out without any sensation of awkwardness and without any dread of ridicule. – Frederick W. Robertson

God’s got this! It’ll be ok. 🙂

UPSY DAISY
When I write a poem and then have to explain what it means – uh… never mind. A poem really should be self-explanatory in nature and apparently this one isn’t. Funny, because it’s crystal clear to me.

Maybe it’s because daisies are my favorite flower and to me they are the essence of happiness! As a matter of fact, I want daisies at my funeral, thank you very much! No carnations surrounding my casket, please! Would somebody please tell my husband because he never reads my blog posts. LOL!!!

The point of the poem is to emphasize that a positive outlook is better than a negative one. Anyone can make a mistake and say OOPSY DAISY – but when you mess up and say UPSY DAISY it means you have taken a lesson from the mistake. It says that you refuse to wear that scar and you will get back up and keep trying!

Oh – a positive outlook can take you so much further than the doom and gloom that we are all tempted to convey. For years I internalized every mistake I made and pretty soon I felt very heavy and very defeated. Shed those layers of past hurts and mistakes and in the future refuse to even put them on! Yes we all sin and yes we all have weaknesses. But hear me when I say Christ died on the cross, God raised Him from the dead, and there is not one sin or one weakness that He cannot help you overcome through His power!

This, my friends, is GOOD NEWS! In fact – this is THE GOOD NEWS – the gospel of Christ! That is the only Good News that can help you for the long haul. There are motivational speakers and people who are positive thinkers, but until you talk about the sacrifice that Christ made on the cross – until the blood of Christ is mentioned, it’s just ear-tickling. It means nothing without the whole story! 🙂

BURDENS BECOME BUTTERFLIES

We have butterfly bushes on the east side of our house. They were strategically planted close to our wrought iron bench. Since it was not as windy here in Kansas today, I sat outside for a while to watch the butterflies. I wondered how nice it would be to be practically weightless and able to fly. Then I realized that since God took my burdens, I feel much lighter.

Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits. – Psalm 103:2

His benefits. Who would not want His benefits? We as a society are focused so much on losing physical weight, but I’ll bet a lot of skinny people would love to lose some spiritual, emotional and mental weight. Being heavy on the inside can be more destructive than being heavy on the outside, I believe.

Nobody can hand over your baggage to God except you. Once you take that first step, you’ll be amazed how much lighter you will feel. I would use the words giddy… happy… hopeful… there is a sense of order and peace and love. Once all of the weight is gone, it’s simply amazing. There is power from God’s Holy Spirit that gives you energy like Red Bull!

Be energetic in your life of salvation, reverent and sensitive before God. That energy is God’s energy, an energy deep within you, God himself willing and working at what will give him the most pleasure. – Philippians 2:12-13

It’s my hope and prayer that your burdens will become butterflies today! Hand them over to Jesus and experience that weightless feeling for yourself.

When the dream of our heart is one that God has planted there, a strange happiness flows into us. At that moment all of the spiritual resources of the universe are released to help us. Our praying is then at one with the will of God and becomes a channel for the Creator’s purposes for us and our world. – Catherine Marshall

God has given us such beauty.  It’s up to us to tap into it and allow our burdens to turn into butterflies.  Have a blessed day.  🙂

GIVE IT TO GOD AND GO PLANT PANSIES

Today is GARDEN MEDITATION DAY!!! I want to discuss pain management.  I’ve tried several different methods to manage pain, one of them being meditation.

I tend to be ultra conservative when it comes to pain management.  I avoid pain killers prescribed by healthcare professionals. I don’t like feeling brain fog. I need to be sharp to write effectively. Meditation, prayer and time alone with God seem to take me away from the pain and get my mind focused elsewhere.

Stress and pain are closely intertwined.  When your body is tense and stressed, the key to getting relaxed and releasing the tension is meditation.  I was advised against two types of meditation by my doctor since I was the victim of domestic abuse.  Hypnosis and transcendental meditation.  Both of these involve the complete clearing of your mind, basically giving another person (or whatever) control.  In hypnosis you are trusting another person and in TM you are just clearing your mind completely.  I’m not comfortable with that.

The Buddhist’s “mindfulness meditation” requires that you focus as opposed to empty your mind. I am a Christian, so I choose to focus on God’s Word and in particular, the Psalms.  There I find strength, joy and peace.  I also find that quiet time and prayer are beneficial for me.  When I’m in a proper frame of mind, it helps me have a better attitude even when my pain level is quite high.  I also find that a cup of hot tea and some Green Hill music playing softly helps.

Remember, we are talking about chronic pain which means the pain never subsides, but is continuous.  If there is something that can break up or interrupt the pain with even a bit of relief, that is welcome!  If you can find something to make you feel even a little better, it is worth doing.  Nothing will ever take the pain away completely, but meditation can help.  Choose your meditation wisely.  Make sure you trust the one you give control of your mind to.

By the way, I do not believe in yoga either. The Om is another invitation to empty your mind, which is attractive to many Christians, but I believe while your mind is empty anything can get in there. I know I may stand alone in that opinion, but it is what I believe. There are wondrous ways to relax with the Lord. Invite Him to help you de-stress. He hears every prayer and no prayer is insignificant. Not even the one that says, “Lord, please help me to RELAX!” Yes, I have prayed that one. He hears it.  Wink!  😉
