A SUMMER OF PSALMS

God’s secret agents, His angels…  I’m interested in knowing more about them, although the Bible really doesn’t mention them often.  It seems that when they are mentioned, their appearance is almost frightening, which makes me wonder why the image of angels that man makes is always either a beautiful woman or a cute little cherub.  No way am I complaining.  I have collected angels for years – from Jim Shore to Precious Moments.  I have quite a collection of angel figurines, etc…  I think the more angels I have around me, the better protected I’ll be.  No, I don’t really believe that – but it sounds good, doesn’t it?  I think I need to get a new angel now!

It comforts my spirit to know that the Lord sends His angels to protect me.  Sometimes I can tell without a doubt that I was spared from something awful, like a near miss when I’m driving.  I always pray before I drive my car – anyone else do that?  I know God hears those prayers and sends me help!

One day I was late getting to work.  It seemed I was hitting every red light along the way, and then I had to stop for a train!  Well, that’s just all I needed!  There was no way I was going to clock in on time.  I couldn’t understand why everything was working against me when I was in such a hurry and racing against the clock.  The answer was soon revealed to me.

As I was finally able to get past the railroad track, I saw a horrible accident at the next intersection that involved at least four cars and a large truck.  I believe that being delayed by that train kept me safe.  Now, why those others were in the accident, I don’t know.  I wouldn’t hazard a guess about that.  I did send some prayers for everyone involved, that’s for sure!

God loves and cares for us so much!  In this life we will face trials and temptations, but through everything, isn’t it wonderful that our Lord hears our prayers and inhabits our praise?  Then we get Heavenly helpers in the bargain!  I talk to my angels – do you ever do that?  No, I’m not weird – but I do believe they are surrounding me, so…  sometimes I talk to them!

My Father’s angels all protect me…  everywhere!  They’re all around me, above me, beneath me, beside me!  Have you read Billy Graham’s book about angels?  I highly recommend it!

We can trust our Heavenly Father to take good care of us every day of our lives!  Have you thanked God for sending you angels lately?  I’m so glad they are with me.  🙂

Jesus, the Light of the World,

As we celebrate Your birth . . . . may we begin to see the world in the light of the understanding You give us.  As You chose the lowly, the outcasts, and the poor to receive the greatest news the world had ever known, so may we worship You in meekness of heart.  May we also remember our brothers and sisters less fortunate than ourselves in this season of giving.  Help us to embrace a comfort Christmas instead of a commercial Christmas.

In Jesus’ Name,

Amen.

We’ve attended the parties and hosted a few…  we’ve designed and decorated and shopped and wrapped and worked like crazy to make memories.  So…  here we are.

Let’s say a little prayer that the Lord will bring to mind anyone we have problems with – that we will somehow be able to forgive them, or ask them to forgive us for transgressions.  Let’s focus on LOVE on this last Sunday of Advent.  There’s nothing more important to our Lord than love – for Him and for each other.

1 In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world.

3And everyone went to their own town to register.

THE GOSPEL IN A NUTSHELL
Gospel means good news. The gospel of Jesus Christ is the good news of what Jesus did in order to save our souls from death and hell. It is a REVEALED Mystery which was kept secret since the world began. If it was revealed before it happened then Satan would have kept The Lord from being crucified. Here is some of this mystery that I see in a nut shell…Jesus came to earth in flesh and blood just like ours. Born under law. He was the public man. He represented the whole human race. God considered all of us to be in Him so that we would personally benefit from everything He did. In the beginning we were all in Adam’s loins in the form of His seed so that when Adam sinned we sinned too. We were partakers through him.
Because of the Virgin birth Jesus was holy and without sin., and without a sin nature. So because He came in our bodily likeness and in the stead of each of our individual persons, and because we were considered by God to be in Him, therefore when He flawlessly obeyed the Law, SO DID WE. We were partakers of every righteous act that He did because we were in Him. Now check this out….When Jesus sanctified Himself we were actually sanctified as a result because we were in Him and part of Him.
I, Paul, have been called and sent by Jesus, the Messiah, according to God’s plan, along with my friend Sosthenes. I send this letter to you in God’s church at Corinth, believers cleaned up by Jesus and set apart for a God-filled life. I include in my greeting all who call out to Jesus, wherever they live. He’s their Master as well as ours!  – 1 Corinthians 1:2
 Take a good look, friends, at who you were when you got called into this life. I don’t see many of “the brightest and the best” among you, not many influential, not many from high-society families. Isn’t it obvious that God deliberately chose men and women that the culture overlooks and exploits and abuses, chose these “nobodies” to expose the hollow pretensions of the “somebodies”? That makes it quite clear that none of you can get by with blowing your own horn before God. Everything that we have—right thinking and right living, a clean slate and a fresh start—comes from God by way of Jesus Christ. What a God we have! And how fortunate we are to have him, this Father of our Master Jesus! Because Jesus was raised from the dead, we’ve been given a brand-new life and have everything to live for, including a future in heaven—and the future starts now! God is keeping careful watch over us and the future. The Day is coming when you’ll have it all—life healed and whole.  – 1 Peter 1:3-5
Jesus said, “Marriage is a major preoccupation here, but not there. Those who are included in the resurrection of the dead will no longer be concerned with marriage nor, of course, with death. They will have better things to think about, if you can believe it. All ecstasies and intimacies then will be with God. Even Moses exclaimed about resurrection at the burning bush, saying, ‘God: God of Abraham, God of Isaac, God of Jacob!’ God isn’t the God of dead men, but of the living. To him all are alive.”  – Luke 20:34-38
We are children of the resurrection (think about that).  
 Ok, now comes our ascension. We even ascended to Heaven with Him.
 It wasn’t so long ago that you were mired in that old stagnant life of sin. You let the world, which doesn’t know the first thing about living, tell you how to live. You filled your lungs with polluted unbelief, and then exhaled disobedience. We all did it, all of us doing what we felt like doing, when we felt like doing it, all of us in the same boat. It’s a wonder God didn’t lose his temper and do away with the whole lot of us. Instead, immense in mercy and with an incredible love, he embraced us. He took our sin-dead lives and made us alive in Christ. He did all this on his own, with no help from us! Then he picked us up and set us down in highest heaven in company with Jesus, our Messiah.  – Ephesians 2:1-6

I, Paul, am under God’s plan as an apostle, a special agent of Christ Jesus, writing to you faithful believers in Ephesus. I greet you with the grace and peace poured into our lives by God our Father and our Master, Jesus Christ.

The God of Glory

3-6 How blessed is God! And what a blessing he is! He’s the Father of our Master, Jesus Christ, and takes us to the high places of blessing in him. Long before he laid down earth’s foundations, he had us in mind, had settled on us as the focus of his love, to be made whole and holy by his love. Long, long ago he decided to adopt us into his family through Jesus Christ. (What pleasure he took in planning this!) He wanted us to enter into the celebration of his lavish gift-giving by the hand of his beloved Son.

7-10 Because of the sacrifice of the Messiah, his blood poured out on the altar of the Cross, we’re a free people—free of penalties and punishments chalked up by all our misdeeds. And not just barely free, either. Abundantly free! He thought of everything, provided for everything we could possibly need, letting us in on the plans he took such delight in making. He set it all out before us in Christ, a long-range plan in which everything would be brought together and summed up in him, everything in deepest heaven, everything on planet earth.

11-12 It’s in Christ that we find out who we are and what we are living for. Long before we first heard of Christ and got our hopes up, he had his eye on us, had designs on us for glorious living, part of the overall purpose he is working out in everything and everyone.

13-14 It’s in Christ that you, once you heard the truth and believed it (this Message of your salvation), found yourselves home free—signed, sealed, and delivered by the Holy Spirit. This signet from God is the first installment on what’s coming, a reminder that we’ll get everything God has planned for us, a praising and glorious life.

15-19 That’s why, when I heard of the solid trust you have in the Master Jesus and your outpouring of love to all the followers of Jesus, I couldn’t stop thanking God for you—every time I prayed, I’d think of you and give thanks. But I do more than thank. I ask—ask the God of our Master, Jesus Christ, the God of glory—to make you intelligent and discerning in knowing him personally, your eyes focused and clear, so that you can see exactly what it is he is calling you to do, grasp the immensity of this glorious way of life he has for his followers, oh, the utter extravagance of his work in us who trust him—endless energy, boundless strength!

20-23 All this energy issues from Christ: God raised him from death and set him on a throne in deep heaven, in charge of running the universe, everything from galaxies to governments, no name and no power exempt from his rule. And not just for the time being, but forever. He is in charge of it all, has the final word on everything. At the center of all this, Christ rules the church. The church, you see, is not peripheral to the world; the world is peripheral to the church. The church is Christ’s body, in which he speaks and acts, by which he fills everything with his presence.  – Ephesians 1

That’s where we sit right now in Christ.  God has gathered us together and hid us in His very presence like a hen gathers her chicks under her wing for protection.  This is a glimpse of the Gospel of our salvation that if a man or woman believes from the heart, will make them righteous by believing it.  We are to be unshakable in the faith.  A faith that rests in the truth of this message that was delivered to us by angels and by God Himself.  It’s a faith and belief in the truth that God has already saved us in this prescribed way. And so we just rest and forever rejoice in this wonderful free salvation that He has ushered in for us with everlasting shouts of joy. The Bible says that God has reconciled us. It says “BE YE RECONCILED TO GOD. Reconcile means to “restore friendly relations between“, so just be the friend of God that He now says that you are. That’s what it means when He says “BE YE RECONCILED” .just be the reconciled friend that He says you now are. PRAISE GOD! I’M RECONCILED!!! I’M GODS FRIEND!!! In a nutshell, in order to be saved, all we need to do is just accept God’s offer of friendship and just be friends with Him.

18-21 The Message that points to Christ on the Cross seems like sheer silliness to those hellbent on destruction, but for those on the way of salvation it makes perfect sense. This is the way God works, and most powerfully as it turns out. It’s written,

I’ll turn conventional wisdom on its head,
I’ll expose so-called experts as crackpots.

So where can you find someone truly wise, truly educated, truly intelligent in this day and age? Hasn’t God exposed it all as pretentious nonsense? Since the world in all its fancy wisdom never had a clue when it came to knowing God, God in his wisdom took delight in using what the world considered dumb—preaching, of all things!—to bring those who trust him into the way of salvation.

22-25 While Jews clamor for miraculous demonstrations and Greeks go in for philosophical wisdom, we go right on proclaiming Christ, the Crucified. Jews treat this like an anti-miracle—and Greeks pass it off as absurd. But to us who are personally called by God himself—both Jews and Greeks—Christ is God’s ultimate miracle and wisdom all wrapped up in one. Human wisdom is so tinny, so impotent, next to the seeming absurdity of God. Human strength can’t begin to compete with God’s “weakness.”  – 1 Corinthians 1:18-25

HE presents you holy – NOT YOU!

16-20 Because of this decision we don’t evaluate people by what they have or how they look. We looked at the Messiah that way once and got it all wrong, as you know. We certainly don’t look at him that way anymore. Now we look inside, and what we see is that anyone united with the Messiah gets a fresh start, is created new. The old life is gone; a new life burgeons! Look at it! All this comes from the God who settled the relationship between us and him, and then called us to settle our relationships with each other. God put the world square with himself through the Messiah, giving the world a fresh start by offering forgiveness of sins. God has given us the task of telling everyone what he is doing. We’re Christ’s representatives. God uses us to persuade men and women to drop their differences and enter into God’s work of making things right between them. We’re speaking for Christ himself now: Become friends with God; he’s already a friend with you.

21 How? you ask. In Christ. God put the wrong on him who never did anything wrong, so we could be put right with God.  – 2 Corinthians 5:20-21

All that’s left is for us to decide whether or not to be friends with Him.  If we do, He will send His Holy loving Spirit to live in our hearts which proves that we are His and that we are His friends.  And it will guarantee our entrance into His Heavenly Kingdom – Into the glorious celestial city…Because God has taken away everything bad that stood between us and Him, we are able to hold our heads high no matter what happens and know that all is well, for we know how dearly God loves us, and we feel this warm love everywhere within us because God has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with His love!

TL A COMMENTARY FROM THE HEART (30)Good people do live in my midst!  We’re getting ready for a garage sale later this month and spent a day preparing the garage for the tables, racks, etc.  The worst thing that can happen at a garage sale is when someone wants to buy something that you are not selling.  The solution is to cover everything that you want to keep with a tarp.

We were working in the garage when along comes our neighbor.  He’s a very pleasant man, friendly and hard-working.  He owns a farm just outside Wichita as well as a home in our little community.  He asked if our riding lawn mower was for sale.  My husband told him it was.  They worked out the details and our big -ticket item was sold.

Seems cut and dried, doesn’t it?  We get money and he gets the rider to use out on his farm.

The story’s not finished.  Here’s the cool part.

Yesterday was the open air market at our extension office.  Most of the vendors have stopped coming because summer is over.  We stopped to look around a bit, not expecting to find much.  There was our neighbor with the last of his vegetable crop – and it looked delicious, I must say.

Without saying a word, he bagged up most of what he had left and handed it to us.

He has absolutely NO idea what he did.  We have vegetables to put in our freezer for winter.  Our freezer was empty – now it’s full.  I think I know what the squirrels must feel like – collecting and filling their little homes with food for the winter months.

He told us it was a bonus payment on the mower.  We laughed.  I wanted to cry tears of joy.

But here’s the thing…  my dad had a garden every year and grew all the vegetables our neighbor does.  We’ve been buying vegetables at the market – but let’s face it, they just are not homegrown.  They don’t taste the same.

I’m sitting here now eating fried okra, crying tears of happiness.  It’s like a taste of home, to be honest.  This small gesture touched my heart and took me back home for just a little while.

This journey called life is filled with a little pain and a little sorrow, but once in a while, a neighbor does something that renews your faith in humans.  I could never thank him enough for that – not without crying, anyway.  It’s more than okra – it’s closing my eyes and going back to a late summer / early fall meal with my parents.  How do you thank someone for that?it-is-more-than-just-okra

I know it’s just a simple little story, but isn’t our life here on the planet about paying it forward?  It’s about sharing your bounty with those who are not farmers or gardeners.  Our neighbor would certainly have not had to do that.

I thank him not only for the food, but also for the wonderful memories that food sparked in me.  And as always, I’m so very grateful to God for making it all happen!  🙂

OREO COOKIE DAY

LET IT SNOWWe only have a few more days of winter, at least according to the calendar.  Mother Nature may have other plans, as we here in Kansas know all too well.  In any case, today is Oreo Cookie Day!  How will you enjoy these sweet treats?  A favorite, of course, is a big glass of milk for dunking – or how about a large cup of coffee for dunking?  That sounds good!  🙂

Not to put a damper on the day, but a friend on facebook mentioned that Nabisco is moving to Mexico and it made me so sad.  I really hope our economy turns around to the point where they bring Nabisco and many other companies back to America, don’t you?

Through the years Nabisco has come up with SEVEN varieties of Oreo cookies:

How about adding a few Oreos to your favorite brownie mix?

OREO BROWNIE TREATS (makes 24 brownies)

Ingredients:

1 pkg. (19-21 oz) brownie mix (for a 9×13 pan)

15 Oreo Chocolate Cookies, coarsely chopped

Instructions:

Stir chopped cookies into batter.  Prepare pan and pour batter in pan.  Bake as directed on package.

Note:  When baking in a glass baking dish instead of a metal pan, always reduce the oven temperature by 25 degrees.

Per Brownie:

170 calories

8 g fat

2.5 g saturated fat

20 mg cholesterol

125 mg sodium

25 g carbohydrates

1 g fiber

16 g sugar

2 g protein

To lower the carbohydrates and sugar content, I use Pillsbury Sugar Free brownie mix – but it takes two boxes to make 9×13 size.  Adding Oreo pieces does add a bit of sugar and carbohydrate back into the brownie, but it’s not enough per brownie to matter.  🙂  Now, if you sit and eat the whole 9×13 pan of brownies – remember you’re adding 15 cookies!  Then you have to count them!  🙂

There are stresses associated with winter, starting with the commute to work over ice and snow!  Some people don’t mind driving on ice, but I’m not in that club!  If I turn a corner and just keep turning – well, let’s just say I don’t find it amusing.  Then once you get where you’re going, there are unique stress factors depending on the day.  Stress is just a part of life, isn’t it?  How do you de-stress?SOMETHING ABOUT TEAChelmsford Tea is a wonderful place to rekindle friendships.  Just a quaint little shop, they have hundreds of blends to choose from.  They brew up a little cup of heaven – and it just melts the stress away.

My mother’s favorite tea was Earl Grey.  I don’t particularly care for it – my tastes gravitate toward more sweet flavors, as did my Granny LaVella’s.  Right now I’m enjoying a cup of Sweet Cinnamon Orange from my favorite tea store, The Spice Merchant, in downtown Wichita.  Sweet Cinnamon Orange tastes like Harney’s Hot Cinnamon Sunset.  I’m sure Granny would share it with me…  oh if only!

When I was younger I hosted casual tea parties.  I put the kettle on and had various flavors to choose from.  Everyone picked their favorite and made their tea.  We’d sit around enjoying our tea as we talked about life in general – literature, work, family.  There was never a moment of silence, but so much laughter in my house…  making sweet memories with my friends!

11828622_445582042288986_2918859347990320449_nThese days, my husband and I enjoy tea and blueberry scones together.  It’s a quiet pleasure, but one that seems to make all the cares of the day just melt away…  there’s just something about tea!  We are in no danger of running out of teapots or teacups around here!  There’s always time for tea, scones, smiles and laughter.  I can’t speak for others, but in my mind, the table setting at a tea party is just as important as the tea you choose to serve.  I enjoy our own Hall Autumn Leaf Jewel Tea antique dishes.  They set a very pretty table and are particularly nice for an Autumn Spice themed tea party.

We do what we can financially to help.  We change our profile photo on facebook to a comic book hero to raise awareness.  We do what we can…  but the most important thing we can do is talk to our Father in Heaven on behalf of these little ones and their parents.

Loving Lord Jesus,

You were the One that said let the little children come unto me, and You placed Your hands on all – and blessed them.. I come to You today to ask that Your healing hand would touch the life of this little child, who has been diagnosed with cancer. Lord their little body is racked with pain and life has become so difficult, as the cancer is encroaching through their tiny frame. Be close to this little one I pray, and hold them close to Yourself. Lord, I ask that they may be healed and spared any from more pain. Be close to this little one each hour of the day, I pray. I lift up the parents, who are baffled by this disease and I ask for Your comfort and strength to uphold them as they seek to care for the little sick child. May they rest in You and be comforted and strengthened in this difficult time – and Lord, give them both the wisdom and skill to nurse their child back to full heath, I pray that they may the find their sufficiency and comfort in You, Whom to know is life eternal.  Thank You Lord Jesus, Amen.

What can my blog do for these sweet children?  I know there are some kids and their parents looking at this right now.  With help from my group, A Second Helping of Wellness…  with a Dash of Humor & a Pinch of Faith, we are giving you gifts of beauty, encouragement and hope.  We know that we can’t take the cancer away (how we wish we could), but we can bring a smile to your face or give you a moment of calm.

This post will be up from September 22nd through the end of the month.  Our group hopes you are encouraged and filled with renewed hope after you look through this post.  Grab your umbrella because a shower of HOPE is on its way!

I'M GOD'S SOMEBODY

If God is for us, who can be against us?  – Romans 8:31 (b)

Do you need a shot of encouragement today?  This is one of those verses that acts just like a dose of pure adrenaline!  Just focus on that one short verse for a minute or two.  The God of the universe is for you!!!  He is on your side as you navigate the twists and turns of this journey called life.  If that doesn’t make you feel fantastic, I don’t know what would.

As much as I love the familiar verse Romans 8:28, I especially appreciate the Scripture that follows it – as it reads in The Message:

So, what do you think? With God on our side like this, how can we lose? If God didn’t hesitate to put everything on the line for us, embracing our condition and exposing himself to the worst by sending his own Son, is there anything else he wouldn’t gladly and freely do for us? And who would dare tangle with God by messing with one of God’s chosen? Who would dare even to point a finger? The One who died for us—who was raised to life for us!—is in the presence of God at this very moment sticking up for us. Do you think anyone is going to be able to drive a wedge between us and Christ’s love for us? There is no way! Not trouble, not hard times, not hatred, not hunger, not homelessness, not bullying threats, not backstabbing, not even the worst sins listed in Scripture:

They kill us in cold blood because they hate you.
We’re sitting ducks; they pick us off one by one.

None of this fazes us because Jesus loves us. I’m absolutely convinced that nothing—nothing living or dead, angelic or demonic, today or tomorrow, high or low, thinkable or unthinkable—absolutely nothing can get between us and God’s love because of the way that Jesus our Master has embraced us.  – Romans 8:31-39

There is one word that comes to mind when I read this – and re-read it.  COMFORT.  This is a hug from God Himself.  You can say what you want about comfort foods…  but I’ll take my comfort Scripture over your comfort foods any day and twice on Sunday!  You should feel fantastic today, Christian, because God is for you!  🙂
