Who IS the Spirit…  the Holy Spirit of God is part of the Holy Trinity.  God is One, yet Three – and no, I don’t know how to explain it – but He is God, so He can be anyone!  There is God the Father, God the Son (in flesh, Christ Jesus), and God the Spirit.  When God the Son ascended into Heaven, He did not leave us completely alone to figure this life out for ourselves – He left us God the Holy Spirit.  We know Him as the Comforter.  As we study God’s Word, we learn that God’s Spirit brings us everything we need to navigate this crazy life.  In this world that is increasingly filled with hate, we have God’s love; in a world filled with despair, we have God’s joy; in a world of wars and rumors of war, we have a deep settled peace that the world will never understand.  God’s Spirit helps us muster up patience when most people in the world want to be anything but… and how mean can people get?  God’s Spirit helps us be kind, good, faithful, gentle and exercise self-control.AN ADDED GIFT

Why would anyone not want that supernatural help???  Does this mean we’re perfect and will never mess up?  Well, sadly – no.  I’m never going to be perfect.  There are circumstances in this world that make me downright angry, but that’s when I have to remember that everything works for good and God has everything under control.  The enemy of my soul knows how to push buttons that make my temper flare, but that’s when I have to re-focus on Jesus and remember His sacrifice so that I can live – and I want to live with the attributes or fruits of His Spirit.

Aren’t we thankful that our Savior did not leave us alone?  I sure am!  Speaking for myself, I need all the HELP I can get…  and God’s Holy Spirit gives me all the HELP I’ll ever need.  He’s so perfect and righteous and Holy.  He makes my life so much better and I need Him every minute of every day.  It doesn’t make me weak – it makes me smart.  🙂

Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.  – Ephesians 5:21

I’m such a believer in proverbial iron-sharpening!  What does that mean?  It’s the support of Christian brothers and sisters that propels their ministry, forwards my ministry and most importantly pleases our Lord.  We submit to one another because we love Christ first of all – also because our friends who are like-minded love and revere Him too.  It goes beyond positive thinking or random acts of kindness.  We’re friends in Christ and we minister together – with a common goal and purpose. 

Submission is not understood in our world today.  People today see being submissive as a definite sign of weakness, when in reality, as a child of God, it’s a choice we make because Christ did so much for us and we are workers together for His sake.  If we keep the proper perspective and focus on Christ and the sacrifice He made for us, it is possible to submit to one another.  We get that it’s not about us – it’s about Him.

We must be mindful to submit to one another and not make it one-sided.  We never want to make our friends feel as though they are doormats to be thrown on the porch for our feet to be wiped on.  I have learned it is not necessarily the wrong thing to say NO to anyone.  I am human, a fact that my Savior is all too aware of…  and there will be times when my ability to submit and support may be hampered due to a physical  limitation or even mental exhaustion.  I used to be afraid to let the flaws be known.  Now I’m not a bit shy about asking for prayer support – and for a postponement.  To avoid burnout, it’s important to view this as a marathon, not a sprint.  It’s a lifestyle, not a phase of life.  We are committed to our Savior forever.

While the context of this verse is directed toward behavior in a family unit, it’s true that the body of Christ needs to adopt similar attitudes and behaviors, don’t you agree?  God’s children have so many reasons to sing for joy – whether it is on pitch or not – strong or weak voice – it makes no difference!  I’m not dense enough to think the Christian life is all singing all the time – we are not always singing and are sometimes crying for any number of reasons.  Regardless of our circumstances, we should be always giving thanks to Christ for His sacrifice – and showing reverence to Him – and do our best to help in ministry and have others help in ours.THINK ABOUT JESUS

There’s a sign on the door at Planet Fitness – it says, “Check egos at the door”.  In other words – don’t think you are either better or worse than anyone else.  Wouldn’t it be great if the body of Christ had that attitude too?  We’re all on the same side – the side of Christ.  We all work for Him.  We’re all on the same team.  Think of what could be accomplished if ego got checked at the door.  Think about Jesus.

As His children we should first and foremost promote HIS glory!  It’s so easy to lose focus and make it about ourselves.  We really are so human but God knows that – and that’s why we need to get on our knees and humbly ask forgiveness – then try again.  I love do-overs and I’ve had a lot of them.

TL 5-20 ON THIS DAY IN HISTORYDo you own a pair of Levi’s???  Today’s a day to celebrate, because on this day in 1873, Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis got a patent for blue jeans!  I have to wonder if they know what they started…  sigh.

As early as 1918 the company created “Freedom-Alls,” a one-piece garment much like overalls, whose name echoed the sentiments of WW I.  By the 1920’s, LS&Co. was promoting women’s hiking togs and jackets in khaki, but not in blue denim.

Did women wear jeans in the 1800’s?  Oh certainly NOT!  If they needed to wear jeans to do chores on the farm, they wore a pair of their brother’s britches.  Jeans were originally meant for men only and women wore dresses exclusively.  It was not until 1934 that Levi Strauss & Co. took a risk that forever altered the course of women’s fashion.

Eighty-two years ago, in the fall of 1934, the company introduced the world’s first jeans made just for women.  Lady Levi’s jeans were first made for western women who needed jeans for farm or ranch work.  The new line was also aimed at women vacationing at dude ranches, working cattle or horse ranches that welcomed guests from eastern states or as far away as Europe.

By 1935 a dude ranching article appeared in Vogue magazine that featured the new Lady Levi’s line.  Thanks to Lady Levi’s sales at select stores in New York for “dudines” traveling west, jeans became fashionable for ladies in the eastern U.S.

On the farm in the 1910’s…  big and roomy so you can move freely, dungarees were practical for the farm.

In the 1960’s everything was skin tight and short…  everyone wanted to look like Twiggy!  And our jeans were not always blue.  We also wore the name of our jeans on our butts – yeah – that was fun.  The jeans that fit me the best were CHIC.  I never could fit into a pair of Levi’s because I was too short and…  well – anyway…  I found a brand that accentuated the positive – let’s just leave it at that.  😉1970s-bell-bottom-menswear-trend-580x822

And the 1970’s…  bell bottoms, anyone???  I always thought those his/hers matchy matchy outfits were a little…  well – weird.  Did anyone actually do that?  Nobody I knew did – but that doesn’t mean anything.jnco1 (2)

These are mom jeans…  from the 1980’s. These are what we don’t want to be caught dead in today.  Cuffs were rolled or not rolled and some of the shirt sleeves are even rolled.  And the waist bands sat at your natural waist, which means that if you bend over, all your “stuff” and your tattoo doesn’t show.  Wow, that’s a crying shame…  not.

In the 1980s, American brands from Levi’s to Gloria Vanderbilt, Jordache and Calvin Klein offered “designer” stretch jeans for women. The stretch jeans of this era were typically a dark wash, skinny and tight-fitting, and featured distinctive designs on the back pockets to identify the designer. The advertising campaigns for these status symbol jeans were unreservedly sexy, focusing on the denim style’s body conscious fit. If you were around during the 80s, you’ll remember a 15-year-old Brooke Shields from her controversial Calvin Klein Jeans TV ad, in which she unshyly told the camera, “Nothing comes between me and my Calvins.”    hilary-haylie-duff-low-rise-flare-jeans

And in the 1990’s the waistbands are SOOOOOOOOO LOW – and the bottoms were flared (but not bell bottom) – and long – too long – and always frayed because they were stepped on while walking – and they had to look tattered and worn – holes were put in them and they were beat with rocks and such – for the sake of fashion.  This is when I decided there are not jeans for my body type.  Oh – I miss my mom jeans.Skinny_jeans_street

And here we are in the 2000’s.  How skinny can you get???  If you’re not skinny, you can’t wear jeans.  Trust me, I do say NO to the donuts, but it doesn’t seem to be enough to make me skinny – shoot!

I’m thankful for my sweat pants, yoga pants (and no, I do not do yoga), casual skirts and knit capris.  The jeans they make these days are not for me, but that’s okay.  I have good memories of younger days when I looked good in my CHIC jeans.  😉

 

 

 

 

 

 

TYPE 2 DIABETES TIPS FOR SUCCESS

If you are not getting enough quality sleep at night, you may be at an increased risk for developing type 2 diabetes. When your body is sleeping, so is your pancreas. When you sleep, insulin levels drop and your metabolism (ability to burn and keep fat off) functions normally. If you stay awake at night, when you should be resting, and you eat late at night, your pancreas will never “shut off” and you’ll have a hard time managing your weight. Get a good 6-8 hours of quality sleep at night.

I wish I had known about the connection between melatonin levels and diabetes sooner!  I’ve been a night owl for years.  There’s just something about the quiet of night…  my brain seems to awaken and my writer’s imagination takes flight – anyone relate???  I think more clearly and do my best work between 10pm and 3am.  For the sake of my health, that will have to stop.  Now.

To be honest, anything I have to do to improve my health – I will gladly do.  Is this blog or any other writing worth losing my health over?  Um…  nope.

If you are a night owl and have diabetes type 2, I invite you to change your sleeping habits.  When research told us to limit carbs, we did.  When it told us to exercise more, we did.  When it told us to take extra vitamin B-12 along with our Metformin, we did.  Now there’s another rule that is for our own good, so we can live as well as we can – get to bed by 10pm and get a good night’s sleep.  Be kind to your pancreas.  Let it rest so it will work better when you’re awake.DEAR PANCREAS

In my defense, I didn’t eat when I stayed up late, but sometimes I did have a cup of tea to sip slowly as I wrote.  But as I said, as long as you are awake, your pancreas thinks it’s on duty regardless and it’s not at rest.

I appreciate being as well-informed as possible because information is POWER.  I like being armed with as much information as possible in this battle, don’t you?  My night owl writing ends tonight.  I’m going to be in bed by 10pm.

Can I imagine myself as a morning person?  Hmm…  not today – but give it time…  I’ll get there!  🙂

TL A COMMENTARY FROM THE HEART (22)How many times do we take everyday things for granted?  I know I do that way too often and I’m trying to do better.  My new diet has turned out to be more restrictive than I thought it would be.  I miss eating fruit because most fruit is extremely high in carbohydrates.  I recently typed in some of my favorites in a carb counter online – and my favorite fruit – apricots…  are only 4 grams of carbohydrates!fruit-808336_1920

I was so happy I did a happy dance all over the house!  Hopefully that burned a few calories – 😉

It sounds silly I know, but in my world it really was a pretty big deal.

On this journey I’ve also decided that turkey bacon doesn’t taste at all like bacon.  😦  It’s okay because I’ve started eating Canadian bacon!   It is a low-carb and low calorie choice and a serving size is 5 slices!  It’s so good on an English muffin with egg and low-fat cheese.breakfast-713112_1920

Some mornings I begin the day with a protein shake.  I found whey protein powder at Walmart in chocolate flavor.  It’s so simple and quick to fix – just put a cup of liquid (I use low-fat milk) in the blender and add a scoop of powder.  It’s not very cold at that point, so I add 2 ice cubes to make it nice and thick and cold.  It also gets rid of that protein powder smell that some folks can’t get past.  It’s like drinking a thick chocolate milkshake for breakfast.  I thought I might get tired of them, but so far I really have enjoyed them!shake-677437_1920 (1)

I’m going to the gym and it’s another big praise to God – I have not injured my leg or back!  Sometimes if I try to do exercise, I mess with the neuropathy (nerve damage) and end up worse off than I was before.  I’m happy to report I’m doing well so far!  I enjoy Planet Fitness so much because there are signs all over the place like NO JUDGMENT ZONE and NO CRITICS.  I’m thinking…  exactly!  We’re all here just trying to do better, right?

The scale is moving – ever so slowly…  but in the right direction.  I pray that my appointment to get my A1c checked again in July will reflect my lifestyle changes.  I’m especially thankful to God that apricots only have 4 grams of carbohydrate each!  YAY!  Thank You, Lord!  🙂

Neuropathy is the term used to describe a problem with the nerves, usually the ‘peripheral nerves’ as opposed to the ‘central nervous system’ (the brain and spinal cord).

The causes of peripheral neuropathy are:

  • Alcoholism. Poor dietary choices made by alcoholics can lead to vitamin deficiencies.
  • Autoimmune diseases. These include Sjogren’s syndrome, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, Guillain-Barré syndrome, chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy and necrotizing vasculitis.
  • Diabetes. More than half of people with diabetes develop some type of neuropathy.
  • Exposure to poisons. Toxic substances include heavy metals or chemicals.
  • Medications. Certain medications, especially those used to treat cancer (chemotherapy), may cause peripheral neuropathy.
  • Infections. These include certain viral or bacterial infections, including Lyme disease, shingles (varicella-zoster), Epstein-Barr virus, hepatitis C, leprosy, diphtheria and HIV.
  • Inherited disorders. Disorders such as Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease are hereditary types of neuropathy.
  • Trauma or pressure on the nerve. Traumas, such as motor vehicle accidents, falls or sports injuries, can sever or damage peripheral nerves. Nerve pressure can result from having a cast or using crutches or repeating a motion many times, such as typing.
  • Tumors. Growths, cancerous (malignant) and noncancerous (benign), can develop on the nerves themselves or they can put pressure on surrounding nerves.
  • Vitamin deficiencies. B vitamins, including B-1, B-6 and B-12, vitamin E and niacin are crucial to nerve health.
  • Bone marrow disorders. These include abnormal protein in the blood (monoclonal gammopathies), a form of bone cancer (osteosclerotic myeloma), lymphoma and amyloidosis.
  • Other diseases. These include kidney disease, liver disease, connective tissue disorders and an under active thyroid (hypothyroidism).

On my journey with type 2 diabetes, I’ve developed diabetic neuropathy.  Most people know it by the term diabetic nerve pain from the advertisements on television.  It’s a shooting, burning pain that constantly reminds me of this disease.  It’s also one of the main reasons I need and want to keep this beast of a disease under control.  The closer in check I keep my sugars, the less pain I feel.  Over the years I have determined that being out of control is just not worth the price I pay.I TRUST YOU, PAPA GOD

In my research I’ve also learned that the popular drug metformin, used to treat type 2 diabetes, when taken over time can cause a vitamin B-12 deficiency.  As we see, a deficiency in B vitamins is a cause of peripheral neuropathy.  When I began to take a vitamin B-12 in addition to my regular multi-vitamin, my pain lessened dramatically.

Between hypothyroidism, arthritis and diabetes it’s a challenge to manage my neuropathy, but I’m determined to stay as active as possible.  On bad days I walk with a cane, but on good days I walk just as fast as my little legs will take me!  I’m thankful to God for the good days!  🙂
