BOB WILLS DAY

There was one song that my daddy insisted I learn to play…  SAN ANTONIO ROSE.  Playing it on the piano does not do the song justice, but I did play it for him – often!  I have some happy memories of my dad sitting by the stereo record turntable, listening intently to his Bob Wills album.  I’ve searched the internet for the album my dad played, but to no avail.  I’ll keep looking as I write.

I love the name of this town in Texas…  TURKEY, TX.  This is where the big Bob Wills Day celebration takes place every year!  Bob Wills is still the king…  indeed!  Country music has evolved (some of us use a different descriptive term) through the years, but classic country music is still the best in my humble opinion.

I love classic country music and offer no apology whatsoever for it.  I love Floyd Cramer’s slip notes and admire a strong, brilliant voice like Patsy Cline.  And nobody fiddled around better than Bob Wills!

What will happen today in Turkey, Texas?

Check out their page on facebook for more information:  https://www.facebook.com/pages/Bob-Wills-Day-Turkey-Texas/120154581334657

I read something there about a tribute to the late Merle Haggard.  I’m not sure if there are any original band members left from Bob Wills group, but if there are, it’s going to be a good time you can bet.  I’m sure the talent will be amazing for the day’s activities.

If you want to read the whole Bob Wills story, take a look at this:  http://www.famoustexans.com/bobwills.htm

He earned the title “king of country swing”, that’s for sure!

If you’re thinking about heading for Turkey, Texas today…  here’s one more link to look at:

http://www.bobwillsday.com/

It would be great to be there, but I couldn’t guarantee that I could keep tears from falling.  When I hear that country swing sound from Bob Wills and similar bands, I can’t help but think of my daddy.  If Bob Wills is playing in Heaven, I’m pretty sure my daddy is happy!  🙂

NATIONAL PLAYGROUND SAFETY WEEK

TL 4-25 NATIONAL PLAYGROUND SAFETY WEEK

April 25-29 is NATIONAL PLAYGROUND SAFETY WEEK!

Each year over 200,000 children are injured on America’s playgrounds.  Because there was not a nationally coordinated effort to insure safe playgrounds, the National Program for Playground Safety was created in October 1995.  It has helped communities across the country examine the critical issues surrounding playground safety.

While having this support is helpful, there are four contributing factors to properly maintain a safe playground atmosphere:

  1. Provide proper supervision of children on playgrounds.
  2. Design age-appropriate playgrounds.
  3. Provide proper fall surfacing under and around playgrounds.
  4. Properly maintain playground equipment.

This spring and summer the entire family can pack a picnic lunch and enjoy their local playground knowing that the children can play with wild abandon.child-1254146_1280Look at this little guy…  he is king of his castle!children-playing-334531_1920Around and around we go…  oh I’m getting dizzy!boy-722420_1920Well, I got to the bottom of the slide and thought I’d just rest a second.playground-888066_1280I’m climbing way up high!playground-855703_1920Here I come… weeeeeee!children-334528_1280Do I look like a monkey on the monkey bars?

On the Playground
By Dr. Holly

I love the playground –
I feel so free
To run around
Between the trees.

I can dance
And I can shout.
I can prance
And jump about.

I can swing
The whole long day.
My feet touch the sky –
Up, up, away!

I can spin
On the merry-go-round
Until I’m dizzy,
Then slow me down.

I can cross
The monkey bars
Like an astronaut
From star to star.

I can climb –
I never stop! –
Like a mountain lion
Straight to the top!

Physical activity acts as fuel for the imagination…  and imagination, well…  it’s a wonderful gift from God!  We use imagination every day of our lives – so does that mean we need physical activity, or the dreaded “E” word – exercise – every day?  I think that’s probably the case!  So, a day at the playground is just what the doctor ordered!SWINGING THROUGH LIFE

Enjoy those little ones while you can.  Time passes by so quickly and these are not days you’ll get to redo, so spend time with them every chance you get!  Have a great week and stay active!  🙂

JUST PRAY NO! WORLDWIDE WEEKEND OF PRAYER

TL 4-23 & 24 JUST PRAY NO! WORLDWIDE WEEKEND OF PRAYERPrayer:  A constant conversation between God and His people through God’s Son, Jesus Christ.  We humbly bow with particular needs on our hearts and minds concerning the United States of America.  We ask God to protect the unborn.  According to Hillary Clinton, the unborn have no RIGHTS under the constitution.  Aside from speaking to her moral fiber, or lack thereof, it begs the question, CAN the constitution ever be amended so that the unborn could have RIGHTS in America?  I don’t have the answer to that question.  I’m not a scholar or a constitutional expert by any means – I’m just a simple child of God who knows that murder is sin, and abortion is murder.

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for giving me life.  I know that nothing destroys life more than abortion, yet I continue to rejoice in the fact that You have conquered death by the resurrection of Your Son, Christ Jesus.  I promise to do everything I can to end abortion and commit myself to speak up, write, and never be silent or passive on behalf of the unborn.  I will be active in the pro-life movement and never stop defending life.  Please lead America back to the values it once had, with You in the center of every decision made from the Whitehouse to the local courthouse.  We need to be a country that embraces liberty and justice – especially for our most innocent – the unborn!  May we speak up for them in good conscience because it pleases You.  Lord, through You may America make provision in the constitution that will protect the unborn so they will not be murdered anymore.  We thank You in advance for what You will do.  Help us to hang on to our faith because You perform all sorts of miracles every single day.

We pray this in the matchless name of Christ our Lord, Amen.

We pray for NO MORE HATE.  We pray for peace in our land, in our time.  We pray that God gives us everything we need to STAND UP TO THE WORLD.  While there is so much hate growing all around us, we keep praying and trusting that God will help us.STANDING UP TO THE WORLD

We know as the time gets closer for our Lord to return to earth for His own, things will get worse.  I know I sound very doom and gloom, and I don’t mean to be a downer.  Here’s the good news…  God’s children have a powerful ally in the Lord.  We have a tool called prayer, and it’s the best thing we can do for ourselves and for each other as we lean on Him to guide us down life’s winding narrow pathway.  🙂

NATIONAL FROG MONTH

TL APRIL IS NATIONAL FROG MONTHAccording to fairy tales, these rather slimy creatures turn into a prince when you kiss them…  um…  I don’t know that to be a fact, but I do know that they sing out loud and strong after it rains here in Wichita!  Sometimes we refer to a heavy rain here in Kansas as a toad strangler…  but it doesn’t really hurt the frogs.  They still croak in sweet harmony when the rain is over.YOU MATTERIt’s so easy to take the sounds of nature for granted.  We hear the frogs croak, the birds chirp and the wind rustling the leaves on the trees – but do we stop to thank God for any of it?  I admit I don’t always…  but once in a while I sit outside and just take it all in, and I have to close my eyes and say a little prayer of thanks to God – I thank Him for my sense of hearing and for the familiar sounds that let me know that everything is okay in my world.Linda - Quote - Frog Jumping Day-screenshot

I’m so thankful that I grew up in the country…  we didn’t have a pond close by, but we had very deep ditches, and every year I got to watch the little tadpoles swimming around.  It seems like a simple childhood activity, but those are some of the happiest memories I hold dear today.children-767034_1920tadpoles-338627_1920It was really great to visit my grandparents on the farm in the spring…  the frogs and tiny tadpoles in their pond were fun to watch – and there were more of them.  sunbeam-292987_1920

I love to watch the little baby animals in the springtime, don’t you?  New life…  new experiences…  new hope!

Of course, we know the acronym for F.R.O.G. – it is FULLY RELY ON GOD!    Let’s keep that in mind today as we appreciate His creation – frogs! FULLY RELY ON GODBABIES IN THE SPRINGTIME

If you have children, make sure they get to see something other than the screen of their new phone.  Show them the babies of springtime…  show them the tadpoles swimming around in the pond.  The wonders of nature and the way God set things up – are amazing for kids of all ages!  I hope that today you will slow down and sit down outside…  close your eyes and take it all in.  🙂

HIGH FIVE DAY

TL 4-21 HIGH FIVE DAYIt’s thought that the HIGH FIVE started in professional sports.  It’s a way to celebrate a great moment or an accomplishment.  It’s like saying WAY TO GO to a team mate for a job well done.  High five the ones you love today, because they may not be around to celebrate with tomorrow – jus’ sayin’…

I’d give anything to high five my parents today.  They were married on this day in 1943.  Marriage is tough under the best of circumstances – and they stayed together and took their vows seriously.  Now they’re together in eternity.  I wish them an eternity of happiness and joy in the hereafter – and give them an air five today!

If you don’t have humans in your realm of influence, you can most certainly high five the cat!

cat-691175_1280

Get a high five from the kiddo out on the playground!

girl-586988_1280And you probably won’t run into this guy today – you have to wait until Christmas, ‘cuz he’s back at the North Pole trying to get rested up…  but if you could find Santa – you might get to high five him!

santa-claus-579113_1920I just think that is TOO CUTE!  🙂

20140209 023

Who will you high five today?  What moments will you celebrate?  I’ll celebrate an exercise session when it’s over.  I’ll celebrate a pound lost – or even a half or quarter pound lost – as long as I lose and not gain.  It’s great to be going in the right direction!

I WILL MISS YOU…

TL I WILL MISS YOU

Doris Roberts was born Doris May Green on November 4, 1925.  She was a very talented actress, receiving five Emmy Awards and a Screen Actors Guild award during her acting career, which began in 1951.  She’s best known for her role as Raymond Barone’s mom on the popular sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond, which ran from 1996-2005.  Doris died on April 17, 2016 at the age of 90.  I have seen her through the years on several programs, including a role as Jessica Fletcher’s cousin on my favorite show, Murder, She Wrote.

Does it crack anyone else up that the interviewer didn’t know what a SECOND BANANA was???  Sheesh…  even I know what that means.

In my opinion, Doris Roberts was not a second banana!  If she was in a movie or TV show, you knew it would be a good, wholesome, clean, funny program.  It would be something that you would not have to watch with the kids in the other room.

Here’s a filmography of Doris’ movies:

  • 1970 – NO WAY TO TREAT A LADY
  • 1970 – THE HONEYMOON KILLERS
  • 1971 – LITTLE MURDERS
  • 1976 – A NEW LEAF
  • 1976 – HESTER STREET
  • 1979 – THE STORYTELLER
  • 1979 – ONCE IN PARIS
  • 1979 – THE ROSE
  • 1989 – NATIONAL LAMPOON’S CHRISTMAS VACATION
  • 2001 – MY GIANT
  • 2001 – ALL OVER THE GUY
  • 2003 – DICKIE ROBERTS:  FORMER CHILD STAR
  • 2006 – GRANDMA’S BOY
  • 2006 – KEEPING UP WITH THE STEINS
  • 2009 – PLAY THE GAME
  • 2009 – ALIENS IN THE ATTIC
  • 2012 – TYLER PERRY’S MADEA’S WITNESS PROTECTION

I think even more than her commanding presence, I will miss hearing her unique voice.  She had the kind of voice that was so recognizable – if I heard it on TV but was not in the room, I knew immediately who was speaking.561px-DorisRobertsApr2011

There were funny women in her generation for sure…  she mentioned Thelma Ritter in that interview.  Also Mary Wickes comes to mind.  There were several “second bananas” back then – but to my way of thinking, they are funny top bananas!  Thank you, Doris Roberts, for leaving us funny moments on film because real life can be so very sad.  I will miss you!  🙂

OKLAHOMA CITY BOMBING COMMEMORATION DAY

TL 4-19 OKLAHOMA CITY BOMBING COMMEMORATION DAY

https://youtu.be/IwOUbZ9tpqE

The photographs used in this slide show are ones I took myself back in 1995.  Considering that my camera at the time was an old One Step – (there were no digital cameras back then) – and I had to scan the individual photos in to my computer before creating the slide show, I think it turned out quite well.

National Oklahoma City Bombing Commemoration Day is on April 19 of each year in memory of the Oklahoma City bombing on April 19, 1995.  The Oklahoma City bombing was a domestic terrorist bomb attack on the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in downtown Oklahoma City.  It remained the most destructive act of terrorism on American soil until the September 11, 2001, attacks.  The blast in Oklahoma City claimed the lives of 168 people, including 19 children under the age of 6.  More than 680 people were injured.  (http://www.history.com/topics/oklahoma-city-bombing)

HAIKU DAY

TL 4-17 HAIKU DAYWhat’s the difference between a Haiku and other poetry?  Here’s the recipe for a Haiku:

The Haiku is a Japanese verse in three lines.  It does not have to rhyme, and in fact should not rhyme, but it is considered a mood poem, so the words you choose should be chosen very carefully, and invoke emotion in the reader – laughter, tears, a sense of compassion, a sense of fear, a sense of accomplishment or a sense of hope and encouragement.  It doesn’t use any metaphors or similes.  Usually when Haiku is taught, the students are told to restrict the number of lines and syllables.  Punctuation and capitalization rules are up to the poet, and need not follow rigid rules used in structuring sentences.

Basic guidelines for beginners (like me – holding my hand up really high!):

  1. Line one has 5 syllables
  2. Line two has 7 syllables
  3. Line three has 5 syllables

A Haiku makes me think of the Chinese philosophical system of harmonizing everyone with the surrounding environment called feng shui.  It’s a popular tool used in all sorts of design and staging of new homes for public view.  It’s all about balance and literally translates as “wind-water” in English.

But back to Haiku…  Lucinda has written some thought-provoking poetry for this blog.  I love Haiku just like I love to hear a short sermon at church that is really good.  A good Haiku will speak to you with these few words, just as a nice short sermon can get to the point and leave a lasting impression on the listener.

SUNFLOWERS HAIKUSUMMERTIME SWING HAIKUDOG HAIKUBLUE HAIKUBABY HAIKUCLOUDS HAIKUDESSERT HAIKUA woman’s reward…  OH I like that!  😉

Lucinda reminded me that there is a SAD side to Haiku…

13022332_1748745145369948_747312919_nOh…  some of us know about chronic illness.  Jus’ sayin’.  :-/

PHYSICAL WELLNESS MONTH

TL APRIL IS PHYSICAL WELLNESS MONTHIf it was easy everyone would be a size 2…  that’s what everyone says.  Nowhere in the Bible do I see a verse in the Beatitudes that says, BLESSED ARE THE HEALTHY, FOR THEY SHALL LIVE FOREVER.  Life comes with challenges – some are emotional, some are mental and yes, some are physical.

I’m facing the challenge of my life.  I recently got my A1c checked – it’s a 3 month average of blood glucose levels.  It’s gone up again – now I’m at 8.3.  It should be under 7.  My doctor asked questions about my eating habits and I admitted my love of fruits and vegetables.  I like goldfish crackers and have little pouches which provide portion control.  I don’t eat more than one a day – honest.  But those little golden beauties are 28 g. of carbs so I can’t keep eating them every day.  I have to give up many fruits that I love – and can’t have fruit juices, even low sugar brands.

The thing that my doctor emphasized to me was that no matter what dietary adjustments I make, the most important thing I can do to regain my health is EXERCISE!

UGH…  the dreaded “E” word again…  but I hate it – I hate to exercise!  I’d so much rather get up in the morning and waddle to the bathroom and make a beeline for the coffee pot.  Do not pass GO, do not collect $200 – go straight to the coffee pot.  🙂

It’s no longer an option – it’s a necessity.  I keep wishing I had a partner in crime…  somebody to say COME ON, LET’S GO!  Some enthusiastic voice beside me, saying, LINDA, YOU ARE WORTH SAVING AND HERE I AM TO HELP YOU – TO WALK WITH YOU AND TALK WITH YOU ALONG THE WAY.

I’m taking the largest dose of Metformin, Glipizide and 40 Units of Levemir every night.  I have to bump up the amount of insulin, which means I’ll have to buy pens sooner – and that is hitting my budget in a BIG way.

I’ve hit the proverbial brick wall – head on – this is it – I have to decide if I’m going to do this or if I’m going to pay out upwards of $400 a month for insulin.

Note to self:  SUCK IT UP, BUTTERCUP!  You have absolutely no choice.  Get out of this bed and put on your walkin’ shoes – get out there!  It’s a beautiful day – and yeah, you’ll walk alone, but you have no choice.  You just gotta do it.

So…  from now on, my routine will be get out of bed, waddle to the potty, waddle to the closet and put on my walkin’ clothes and head out the door – get it done while I’m still half asleep, right???  When I get home I can then waddle to the kitchen, fix breakfast and brew the coffee!

I can do this…  I CAN.  I WILL.  🙂
