NATIONAL BUTTON WEEK

TL 3-20 THROUGH 26 NATIONAL BUTTON WEEK

http://www.nationalbuttonsociety.org/Home.html

There are all sorts of collections – especially old things – antiques.  Some people collect antique furniture or glassware or china.  But this week is all about the buttons – that’s right…  buttons!

It’s a real thing.  I’ll say from the start, my knowledge of buttons will fit into a thimble – a very small thimble.  The National Button Society has so much information for button collectors and this website is chock full of articles and helpful hints for those with a desire to collect these little treasures.TRINKETS & TREASURES (2)

Mama had a button tin – well, it was actually a tin that someone gave us for Christmas that had a fruitcake inside – I’m guessing we tossed the fruitcake and kept the tin.  I’ve always been fascinated with shapes and colors.  I’m not crafty at all, but I did like to get that tin down and look at mama’s buttons.  She didn’t collect them, but just kept them in case she might need them.  I’m sure some of them would probably be very desirable to a collector now – they’re quite old.  Sadly, I sold them at the estate sale.

The articles I read speak of borders and special designs to look for in certain buttons.  Beauty really IS in the eye of the beholder.  I could look at the same button and not realize what distinction it has.  I understand that every button is different, but I have no idea what to look for!

Even though I don’t collect buttons, I want to have a passing knowledge of them.  Before today I didn’t know about the NBS, but today I know it exists and that there are literally hundreds of definitive markings and colors and shapes that are considered desirable by collectors.  I find it fascinating and would like to learn more.  I hope you do too.  Let’s learn more about buttons this week!

Here are some fun facts about buttons – a great Q&A page.  Ask your friends & family these questions and see how many of them know the answers.  That’s your assignment from me this week.  LOL!!!

https://www.buttons.com/about-us/button-facts

There’s a Pinterest page for NBS as well as a facebook page.  You can find both through the link above.

Did you ever play the game Button, button…  who’s got the button…  ???  That was fun until somebody accidentally dropped the button and didn’t want to admit they dropped it.  LOL!

I had a strange thought (what else is new?) – if we were each a button, how would God see us?  Which ones of us have the right border or the right shape?  I told you it was a strange thought.  Actually, He has a button tin (although it probably didn’t have fruitcake in it originally) – and He thinks we are all beautiful – we’re each so different – but so lovely and shiny and colorful in our own way.

Some buttons are ornate and of very little practical value.  Maybe they’re so fancy it makes them difficult to use.  Other buttons are very plain, but easy to use.  Since my arthritis has gotten worse, I can’t button some things like I used to.  LOL – just give me a pull over sweatshirt – it’s easier.

I’m a button with a few scratches – but God loves me anyhow, and He works with me to make me more shiny every day.  He does that for you too!  🙂

LAST DAY OF WINTER

TL 3-19 LAST DAY OF WINTER

I’m so ready, aren’t you???  Lately, I’ve been awakened by birds and sunlight streaming into my room.  Once we get past the initial shock of Daylight Savings Time, that’s when the real magic begins.  We look forward to tee-shirt weather and longer evenings.  Some of us also muddle through allergies, but it’s still worth it.HE'S STILL CREATING

In Kansas we’ve learned to approach the first day of spring with a cautious optimism.  I have memories of April snow storms!  One year I was hosting a birthday tea on April 2nd – and had to call around at the last-minute because there was a winter storm raging outside!  But I don’t feel that doubt this year like I have in years past – maybe because Easter is so early.  I think we’re safe from winter’s sneaky game this year.

The first day of spring is one thing, and the first spring day is another.  The difference between them is sometimes as great as a month.  – Henry van Dyke

I took my first walk outdoors yesterday.  For starters, I survived – yay!  I wore sweats and thought that would be warm enough, but the breeze was still fairly chilly.  My ears felt a little sore when I got home, but I’m no worse for wear.  There’s something special about knowing the walks will be outside.  I don’t enjoy walking on a treadmill and find it very dull.IT'S A PERFECT DAY TO FEEL GREATOur local Lowe’s is getting all set up for spring and summer in their garden center.  Whether you plant vegetables or flowers, there’s an excitement about playing in the dirt!  Even after we’re adults, we make mud pies – oh, come on – admit it!  You still like to make mud pies!

It’s spring fever. That is what the name of it is. And when you’ve got it, you want — oh, you don’t quite know what it is you do want, but it just fairly makes your heart ache, you want it so!  – Mark Twain

Will you fly a kite this month?  It’s been years since I’ve done that!  I used to live across the street from a popular park where people would go to fly kites.  Those are good memories.  I used to take my Sunday School class to the park to fly kites and have a picnic in March.  I made them promise to show up for Sunday School – and most of them kept that promise.GOD HAS POURED OUT HIS LOVEWe plant the seed and God provides everything that little seed needs to grow into something wonderful.  It’s true for plants, flowers and people.  When we plant the seed of God’s Word, He makes it grow!  Just keep on plantin’…  that’s what we’re here for, right?  🙂

NATIONAL AWKWARD MOMENTS DAY

TL 3-18 NATIONAL AWKWARD MOMENTS DAY

And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.  Romans 8:28

I’ve lived on this planet for nearly five and a half decades…  and believe me when I say I’ve had my share of AWKWARD moments!  With every one of them, I’ve learned to shake it off and move on as I laugh (and pee a little…)  sorry – TMI.

There’s a reason that Taylor Swift’s song, Shake It Off resonates with the masses.  We’re all too human and that means we are not perfect, which means that at times we are all awkward and experience awkward moments.  The good news is – our awkward moments in life are not life-altering.  We know that God works ALL things for our good – and by all, I mean – ya know… ALL!

That’s why we must not give up – on anything!  We have to remember that every day will not be filled with roses and violin music!  If it was, we’d have precious little to share in the way of life experience – let alone, things to look back on and have a hearty laugh!  Some things make us more human, and the humanity is the part that we all have in common.  It makes us more relatable to one another.

So, with a humble heart and blushing cheeks, I share my most awkward moment in ministry.  I wouldn’t trade this day for anything, yet I definitely would not like to relive it either.  :-/

I GUESS IT'S TRUE

Being part of ministry in any capacity is never a waste of time.  Remember the words to the old hymn…

Only one life, so soon ’twill be past.  Only what’s done for Christ will last.

There can be – shall I say, “awkward moments” along the way.  We know that God leads the way and He gave us many safe trips for sure!  Awkward moments happen though – with people and situations.  :-/

From the mid 1980’s through the mid 1990’s, my husband and I were part of a gospel quartet.  We spent time traveling around and ended up in a small town in Kansas for a Sunday evening service.  I decided to wear blue jeans and a tee-shirt for traveling, certain that there would be a place to change my clothes.

When we got to the church, we got all set up and was ready to practice to adjust the sound and so forth…  I casually looked around the small church, but did not see a restroom.  I began to panic a little and pray a lot.  I needed to put my dress on for the concert.

About that time, the pastor walked in – all smiles.  I was nearly in tears.  I was embarrassed to ask, so had my husband ask if there was a restroom.  When my husband came back to tell me – I could tell by the look on his face – this was not going to be good.  The restroom was an outhouse.  Yep – and that’s where I changed clothes.

I got ‘er done, folks!  Dignity intact, I’m happy to report.  Then we played a few more songs in the sanctuary – and noticed a scraggly old dog had walked into the church.  He decided to lay down in the aisle and listen.  We played one song – then the dog got up, turned around and walked right back out the door.  LOL!!!

My husband said…  Now THAT’S a critic!  🙂

COLOSSIANS 3:17 ON 3/17

TL COLOSSIANS 3 17 ON 3 17

And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.  – Colossians 3:17

How do you celebrate St. Patrick’s Day?  I’m not a big party animal (I know…  surprise, surprise), but I do like to find some good corned beef and cabbage!  We used to drive to Kansas City to a bar called O’Doud’s  for authentic Irish food, but this year I read on my facebook newsfeed that Cracker Barrel will be serving corned beef and cabbage through today.  So…  we will probably go to our local restaurant here to celebrate the day!

Wearing green means I won’t get pinched – that’s got to be a good thing, right?

When the beautiful and talented actress Maureen O’Hara passed away, I wrote a poem about a movie she starred in, “The Quiet Man” along with John Wayne.  If you’ve seen it, you’ll notice at the end of the movie, she whispers in John Wayne’s ear – and whatever she whispered has remained a secret – but you can see by the look on the Duke’s face…  it must have been pretty shocking!

I want to know what Kate whispered to her Sean.  🙂

Nobody is alive to break the silence.  Director John Ford is the one who told Maureen what to whisper to John – and now…  well – there’s no way we’ll ever find out what it was she said.  I, for one, am so curious to know.  WHAT DID KATE WHISPER

Every year TCM runs The Quiet Man throughout the month of March.  If you have never seen it, I hope you’ll watch it this year – and pay particular attention to the end of the movie – and the part where Kate whispers in Sean’s ear – and look at that priceless expression on his face!   🙂

JOHN 3:16 ON 3/16

3-16 HAPPY 3-16This one verse in God’s Word, the Bible, speaks volumes.  If this was the only verse a person committed to memory and held close to their heart, it would be enough.  It tells the whole story – encompasses every key component necessary to obtain Salvation.  Whoever believe in Christ…  bow, let Christ know that you believe that He died on the cross for your sins and that you need Him every day of your life…  and He will not let you perish but He will give you eternal life.  It’s not what we deserve, but it’s how good our God is.

We think we know what love is.  A little over a month ago, we celebrated love on Valentine’s Day.  Have you offered to die for your loved ones?  Me neither.  Have you willingly sacrificed your life for them?  No – me neither.  Christ died so that we could be saved from hell.  He’s the only One worthy of all our praise.GIVE IT TO GOD AND GO PLANT PANSIES

It’s an amazing miracle when two people meet and have this belief in common.  They know what Christ did for them as individuals – but when the two combine their beliefs and allow Christ to be in the center of their love…  that is really something special and it’s such a blessed union.  The most wonderful gift a union like that can give is a faithful prayer life – Christian husbands and wives praying for one another.

Dear Heavenly Father,

Help us to remember that verse in Ecclesiastes 4:12 – Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.  When we’re tempted to worry or fret, we need Your strength and power in our midst.  We are so human and You are so supernatural and give us such grace and mercy.  Marriage is challenging at times, but we know that You are ready to direct our paths and put us on the right track.  Thank You for Your goodness and for teaching us daily how to love through forgiveness and faith.  Remind us that our cares should be cast on You.  We find our joy in You, and always will.

In Jesus’ Matchless Name, Amen.

Know God = Know Love

No God = No Love

It’s true.  Try loving God’s way…  He wrote THE BOOK on it.  🙂

CAFFEINE AWARENESS MONTH

STAGES OF WAKING UPDo you depend on your morning jolt of caffeine to make you easier to live with?  I do.  Some of my friends say that they are not “old enough” to drink coffee – these are friends who are about 20 years my senior.  :-/  Other friends are quick to tell me they don’t like coffee – but they get their shot from a soda – Pepsi, Dr. Pepper, Coke – whatever.  A few of my friends and some in my group on facebook say they need a spot of hot tea.  I doubt that the first cup in the morning is decaf – just guessing.

Most of us need a kick of caffeine in one form or the other.COFFEE HELPSI think this month should be called CAFFEINE APPRECIATION MONTH – but what do I know?  We’re aware of it – I’m especially aware when I don’t get my caffeine boost!  Ugh…  I may as well plan for a migraine if for some reason I don’t get a cup of coffee by noon.  The struggle is real.

Well meaning strangers have tried to talk me into weaning myself off of caffeine.  Have you ever seen my fangs?  Oh…  you didn’t know I have them?  Keep talking like that – and you will see them.  Change the subject – change it now.

I don’t drink.  I don’t smoke.  I don’t eat tons of sugar or fat.  Caffeine is the only vice I have…  do not try to yank that out from under me.  Seriously.STIR ONE ANOTHER UP

It’s a delicate balancing act…  too little caffeine and I’m headed for migraine city.  Too much caffeine and it can have a rebound effect and I could still end up with a migraine.  There are so many triggers though – caffeine is just one on a long list of foods and beverages.  Alcohol, by the way, is on the list, along with chocolate (which is also filled with caffeine), strong cheeses like longhorn cheddar can trigger them.  Processed meats are a no-no.  I pick pepperoni off my pizza.  Nitrates are filled with sodium and that’s another trigger.  I can manage my caffeine intake by drinking just one cup of coffee in the morning and one diet pop in the evening.A TRIBUTE TO COFFEE

Lucinda likes coffee too!  Isn’t that a cute poem?  I’ve never poetized about coffee…  hmm.  I really should write a poem about it someday.  🙂
