What does 10-4 mean?  It’s the APCO 10-code for “I understand your transmission.”

Cobra CB Radio
Cobra CB Radio

From 1980 – 1985 I drove a Pontiac with a moon roof and about a dozen long antennas!  I had a citizen’s band radio in my car back in the day (quit laughing, you had one too).  We didn’t have computers or facebook, but we got acquainted with a lot of interesting people – I guess you could say it was the social media of the day!

What was your handle?  Mine was SASSY LADY – and I was (and am).  As time goes by, we tend to forget some of the good times we used to have.  Along with the CB craze came movies and songs centered around it – we listened to tear-jerker songs like Teddy Bear by Red Sovine.  We went truckin’ down the highway to Convoy by C.W. McCall.  When Smokey & The Bandit came to Wichita, I remember standing out in the rain to get into the theatre!  It was showing at the old Crest theatre (which has been gone for a long time).  Of course, they made parts II and III.  They should have quit while they were ahead – in my humble opinion.

As long as we’re reminiscing, do you remember this?

When I saw that they wanted $100 for this, it made me want to kick myself.  I had this back in the day, but as I grew up and my sense of style matured, like many others, I got rid of it!  If I had known back then that some of this stuff would be collectible…  I would have hung on to it!

Back in the day, we drove the double-nickel and kept the bugs off our bumpers and the bears off our tails.  CB Radios were the coolest thing for vehicles since the 8-track tape!  We had fun as we drove, but sometimes we would scan the channels and do some ambulance chasing or storm chasing.  Trust me, in Kansas there are plenty of opportunities to chase storms!  There’s always a tornado brewing somewhere in the springtime.

Do those memories put a smile on my face because back then I wasn’t in as much pain?  Is it because I was happier then?  I don’t really think it’s either of those.  I’ve always romanticized the past for some reason.  I look back and think of the good parts – and maybe that’s a good thing.  I know the past was not better because life is so much better now.  I guess I just think nostalgia is fun.

We may not have a CB Radio anymore, but I don’t want to forget what 10-4 means because if I hear the Lord speak to me, I always want to be ready to say, 10-4, Holy Spirit – I understand Your transmission.  🙂
