MAKE UP YOUR MIND DAY

TL 12-31 MAKE UP YOUR MIND DAY

12-31 WHEN YOUR MIND'S MADE UP

Today we observe MAKE UP YOUR MIND DAY.  A favorite Bible verse popped to mind:

And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.  – Joshua 24:15

A man I used to work with made it a point to buy a brand-new Corvette every year.   His track record with relationships was dismal (I’m being kind) and it was a way of proving to everyone (including himself) that he was worth something.  He spent very little on any sort of social life and had been jilted by women because he was very self-centered, shallow and afraid to commit.  I had a few brief conversations with him about life, love and faith.  I still pray that he will accept Christ into his life and let Him make life brighter and more meaningful.

I’m responsible for my decisions and my actions.  Quite frankly, that is enough responsibility and some days it seems like more than I can handle.  I plant seeds about life, love and faith because a life directed supernaturally is in good hands.  Love from Christ is love that will last and will never fail.  Faith in God through Christ will always be enough to see you through.  It’s the kind of faith that will see you all the way through to heaven!  I plant – but it’s up to God to make that seed grow!

So make up your mind.  I’m reminded of a song!  Here’s your earworm for today – you’re welcome!

Once you let God’s love and His Word guide you in life, the things that once seemed so important take a back seat to other priorities.  Your focus changes completely because you begin to care about the things that God cares about instead of the things that society puts emphasis on.  It’s freedom that you can’t possibly understand until you experience it for yourself.  Wouldn’t it be a great idea to begin a relationship with Jesus in 2015?  There’s no time like the present to accept HIS presence in your life!  It’s not difficult – just ask Him to be your Lord and Savior.  Accept His sacrifice on Calvary’s cross.  You know, He would have died if you were the only one on the earth!  He loves you.  ❤

Well…  I’ll be dancing around the living room singing this song while I’m dusting…  I’ve got my mind made up…  😀

BACON DAY

TL 12-30 BACON DAY

12-30 BACON, EGGS & COFFEE

We plan, we toil, we suffer – in the hope of what?  A camel-load of idol’s eyes?  The title deeds of Radio City?  The empire of Asia?  A trip to the moon?  No, no, no, no.  Simply to wake just in time to smell coffee and bacon and eggs.  – J.B. Priestly

There are bad words that begin with the letter B.  We won’t be reviewing those here – I’ll not waste time, gray matter or space to dignify those words.  I will, however, let you know one word that starts with B that will make you smile and want to heat up the skillet – BACON!!!

Today is BACON DAY!  Did you know bacon had a special day?  Well – it does!  Most Americans feel downright patriotic about bacon!

What is patriotism but the love of the food one ate as a child?  – Lin Yutang

We don’t eat a lot of bacon since my husband had a heart attack a few years ago, but once in a while we use common sense and moderation with some foods, bacon being one of them.  Through the years I have seen some pretty weird things that have a bacon scent, such as:

 CANDLES

AIR FRESHENERS FOR CARS

TOOTHPASTE

ADHESIVE BANDAGES

SOAP…

just to name a few!

There’s just something about the smell of bacon, isn’t there?  Oh – and have you seen the DIET COKE WITH BACON, or the BACON FLAVORED TOOTHPICKS?  If you can come up with a product that smells or tastes like bacon, you have a hit on your hands for sure!

Here is a Bacon Day Q & A:

Wasn’t that helpful and informative?  So what will you do to celebrate Bacon Day?  I thought of writing a poem, but all I heard was the sound of crickets in my head – so I just took a nap instead.  I was going to ask my friend Lucinda to write a poem about bacon, but I was afraid she would call the Wichita chapter of the men in the white coats to come and take me away.  I’m just kidding, she wouldn’t do that.

I did find this…

Wow – he’s really passionate about his bacon, eh? I think Lucinda and I should recite our poetry with bongo drums.  LOL!

And yeah – there’s a song about makin’ bacon pancakes.  Hee hee (hiccup – oh, sorry!)  Not bad manners, just good bacon…  😉

Well, I know that fried bacon is a temptation all by itself, but I like this recipe:

A COMMENTARY FROM THE HEART

COMMENTARY FROM THE HEART 35

12-29 LET THE BRUISE HEAL COMPLETELY

In December 2014, I’ve seen images of perceived injustice and true injustice.  I’ve heard speeches that are a transparent attempt to pull the races further apart.  I’ve always been a Caucasian woman so I see the world through my gray eyes, but I do not wear rose-colored glasses.  I do not pretend that everything is perfect in this world, in this country or in my community.  I know as well as anyone that there is work to be done by everyone.  As a Caucasian woman I refuse to shoulder all of the responsibility but I am more than willing to meet anyone halfway.  I am prepared to do as much as I can to get along with anyone with the understanding that they will make that same effort with me.

I am not a hater.  I am not a divider.  I am not any label that anyone wants to stick on me.

I’ve prayed throughout the month of December, and I have been led by the Lord to write this post.  I know it’s not giddy and fun, but when I began writing this blog I promised God that I would do so with my ears open to HIS leading.  This is HIS blog and always has been (it always will be).

Hear me people – my civil rights END at the tip of my nose and so do yours.  Once I begin making demands that make my rights seem more important than yours, I am treading on your rights and diminishing them.  True equality will not come to pass with violence of any kind or with harsh speeches that make others feel less protected and more threatened.

I want nothing between my Lord and I in 2015.  I want to be just as close to Him as I can get.  There is no room for judgment, hate or evil when God is with me and His Holy Spirit is guiding me.

That’s the bottom line – if it is peace we want in our country – an INDIVISIBLE country, as we say in the Pledge of Allegiance – then it comes down to each person deciding to chase after it with a sense of real purpose.  I want that and vow to pray for America and be the person I know God wants me to be in the upcoming year.

Remember the GOLDEN RULE???  It seems to be a bit tarnished nowadays.  Let’s shine it up with the cloth of God’s love and let HIS LOVE shine through us to everyone in 2015!

I’m just one voice – one Caucasian woman, writing what God laid on my heart to write.  I was obedient.  I can’t change a heart or a mind.  THAT is up to God.  ❤

PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE DAY

TL 12-28 PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE DAY

12-28 ONE NATION UNDER GOD

Today is PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE DAY!!!  I’ve followed the latest story of attack against the Pledge of Allegiance.  High School student, Samantha Jones, with representation from The Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, is defending her right to say ONE NATION UNDER GOD.

What a brave girl!  I wonder if I would have had that kind of backbone when I was in High School?  I know I would now, but back then, I’m not so sure.

The American Humanist Association filed a lawsuit earlier this year against the Matawan-Aberdeen Regional School District to remove the phrase “under God” from the Pledge of Allegiance.  The AHA is representing a family who objects to the phrase being recited at one of the schools within the New Jersey school district.

Public schools should not engage in an exercise that tells students that patriotism is tied to a belief in God.  Such a daily exercise portrays atheist and humanist children as second-class citizens, and certainly contributes to anti-atheist prejudices.  – AHA lawyer David Niose

Samantha Jones goes to Highland Regional High School in Blackwood, New Jersey.  The Christian-based Becket Fund for Religious Liberty is defending she and the school district.  They say Samantha has the right to say “under God” in the Pledge of Allegiance.

I’ve been reciting the pledge since preschool, and to me the phrase ‘one nation under God’ sums up the history and values that have made our country great.  I think it’s empowering to know that, no matter what happens, I have some rights the government can never take away. No student should be silenced just because some people disagree with timeless American values.  – Samantha Jones

The following quote was published in The Christian Post:

The judge seemed focused on the case, he had prepared well, and he was familiar with the arguments of each of the parties.  He asked tough questions of each side, and it is difficult to predict the outcome, but we are optimistic that he will agree with every other court to decide this issue and uphold the pledge.  – Diana Verm, a lawyer with the Becket Fund

On this day, may we raise up this important case to God in prayer.  May God richly bless Samantha and her family and give them strength and wisdom.

The attorney for the unidentified atheist family goes on and on about his client’s rights – that having the phrase in the Pledge offends them.  The thought of taking it out OFFENDS ME – WHAT ABOUT A CHRISTIAN’S RIGHT TO HAVE THE PHRASE STAY THERE???  I’m sick and tired of everyone else’s rights coming before Christian’s rights!  This country was founded on CHRISTIAN BELIEFS AND PRINCIPLES.  If you don’t like the phrase, you don’t have to say that part – but don’t take it out because there are many (including me) who will say it regardless!  It calms my spirit to know that the God of creation has this mess of a country in the palm of His hand.  There’s no better place it could possibly be!

They already took prayer out of schools – they booted God clear off campus – and wow – that’s really working out well for us, don’t you think?  We never had shootings at our schools – but our teachers taught us to respect our Country, our elders, and our Higher Power!  It’s my RIGHT to pray – it’s my RIGHT to say UNDER GOD when I recite the Pledge of Allegiance.  Anyone who is uncomfortable can make a choice to either not say the Pledge or not say the part that is offensive to them.  There are plenty of things that non-Christians do that I’m uncomfortable with – and you know what?  I don’t make them stop – I just don’t join in.

No matter what the official outcome is, the powers that be will never force me to leave out the words UNDER GOD from my Pledge of Allegiance.  Instead of having more of a separation between church and state, there needs to be a knitting together of the two.  I’m praying for this country – now more than ever.  And – by the way, I’m praying about the part of the Pledge that follows – INDIVISIBLE.  Uh-huh – yep – I’m praying about that part too.  ❤

I PLEDGE ALLEGIANCE TO THE FLAG OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA;

AND TO THE REPUBLIC FOR WHICH IT STANDS; ONE NATION UNDER GOD;

INDIVISIBLE, WITH LIBERTY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL.

TAKE CARE

10424247_652103474874069_3967698806916136750_n

I believe people mean well.  Most people have a kind of “sign-off” to their conversation that goes something like this:  TAKE CARE.  It’s a rhetorical comment, not something we are expected to respond to.  We’re just expected to smile, nod and say HEY, YOU TOO – GOOD TO SEE YOU, or something like that.

It seems like all I get done is taking care of myself.  Wouldn’t it be so nice if I didn’t have to think about every little thing as it concerns my health?  It’d be great if I was not restricted by diet, activity level and the style of shoes I wear.  When I was younger, I wore pretty shoes with a nice heel.  I wore pretty dresses or suits to work with open-toe sandals in the summer.  Today my feet are more delicate and particular.  I’m forced to wear a closed toe shoe with plenty of “wiggle room” for my tootsies.  When my feet are happy, I’m happy.

Type II diabetes is such a frustrating disease.  Everyone (including my chiropractor and doctor)  tells me  if I lose weight, it will magically disappear.  That is my only incentive for losing weight because I would love to be rid of it once and for all.  I stay active and I’d set my diet up alongside anyone else’s any day of the week – I eat a very healthy diet!  The weight will not leave – it will not GO!

I don’t typically make New Year’s Resolutions, but I’ll make an exception this year.  If it’s true that weight loss would rid me of type II – then I simply have to resolve to get the weight off once and for all.  I’m doing 30 minutes of cardio in the morning and 30 minutes in the evening.  I’m not a couch potato by any means.

Friends, please keep me in your prayers.  Pray that I stay strong and achieve some significant weight loss and a drop in my A1c.  How great would it be to be taken off insulin and not have to take as much metformin?  Now I’m taking 4 250 mg capsules a day and 20-35 units of Levemir every night.

The weight seems to be glued to me – that’s the only way I know how to describe it.  It really likes me and wants to stay.  I really don’t like it and don’t want it to stay – LOL!

Life expectancy would grow by leaps and bounds if green vegetables smelled as good as bacon.   – Doug Larson

Living with invisible chronic health conditions is challenging.  I try so hard but the effort I put in is not always visible to others.  I’ll keep trying…. and do my best.   I’m making a New Year’s Resolution to TAKE CARE.  And I hope you will take care too!  😉

BOXING DAY

TL 12-26 BOXING DAY

12-26 BOXING DAY EVERY DAYBoxing Day last year:

Today in England, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and other former British commonwealth countries, they are celebrating a legal holiday known as BOXING DAY!  It’s also known as St. Stephan’s Day because churches opened their collection boxes to the poor.   The holiday developed because servants were required to work on Christmas day, but took the following day off. As servants prepared to leave to visit their families, their employers would present them with gift boxes.

During my second year of nursing school our professor gave us a quiz. I breezed through the questions until I read the last one: “What is the first name of the woman who cleans the school?” Surely this was a joke. I had seen the cleaning woman several times, but how would I know her name? I handed in my paper, leaving the last question blank. Before the class ended, one student asked if the last question would count toward our grade. “Absolutely,” the professor said. “In your careers, you will meet many people. All are significant. They deserve your attention and care, even if all you do is smile and say hello.” I’ve never forgotten that lesson. I also learned her name was Dorothy.   – JoAnn C. Jones, Guideposts, January 1996

In the Middle Ages, members of the merchant class would take boxes and fill them with food and fruits to give to servants, tradespeople and the less fortunate.  Servants worked on Christmas Day, so the day after Christmas they would be given a day off to celebrate.

Wherever there is a human being, there is an opportunity for a kindness.  – Seneca

Today Boxing Day is celebrated by filling boxes with food and clothing for the needy and doing volunteer work.  Monetary donations to various organized charities are also common.

If Christmas falls on a Friday or Saturday, Boxing Day is celebrated the next Monday.

We are told in the Bible that the poor will always be with us.

For ye have the poor with you always, and whensoever ye will ye may do them good: but me ye have not always.  – Mark 14:7

Sometimes people use this verse as an excuse to withhold charitable contributions because they argue that it will do no good – the poor will be with us always.  I think the actual point Christ was making was that He would not always be amongst man on earth in human form.  Yes, the poor will be here, just as the rich people will be here.  Whether we are rich or poor, we have choices to make.  We as individuals will be held accountable for the choices we make.  It all comes down to what we believe is the right thing to do and what we are taught is the right thing to do.

God smiles on His children who share.

Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.  –  2 Corinthians 9:7

We give in secret.  Give quietly and shhh…  don’t tell.

That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.  –  Matthew 6:4

THE FAMILY ACROSS THE WAY

While I believe alms refers to the tithes  and offerings given to the church, the same application should be made to charitable giving.  Here in the U.S.A. we don’t celebrate Boxing Day, but we still need to keep in mind that not every family had a Merry Christmas!  We (and I’m pointing to myself too) need to try to find those who are struggling and help them if we possibly can.  Wouldn’t it be a great idea to make Boxing Day a day of giving to those less fortunate?

I give because it’s the only concrete way I have of saying that I’m glad to be alive and that I can earn my daily bread doing what I love.  Giving… puts our focus back where it belongs – on the lives we lead, the families we raise, the communities which nurture us.  – Stephen King

People have all sorts of motives for giving (tax breaks, bragging rights, getting on someone’s good side), but remember God knows the heart and the motive.  I have a personal belief that once you are praised by people or receive any payment or compensation, you lose your reward from God.  Humility has to be a key element of real giving – be humble and quiet.  God knows and His reward is sufficient for your life and His blessings will sustain you.  He gives the best rewards, doesn’t He?  To my friends celebrating Boxing Day – have a wonderful day!  🙂

I like the idea that God has a box packed with everything I will ever need – don’t you?

CHRISTMAS DAY

TL 12-25 CHRISTMAS DAY

P&P MERRY CHRISTMAS FROM THE STEEPLE

Blessed is the season which engages the whole world in a conspiracy of love!  – Hamilton Wright Mabie

Nothing touches the heart quite like those wonderful (corny – my husband would add) Hallmark movies!  They are a large part of my Christmas tradition.  I keep the little package of Puffs right beside the recliner where I can reach them quickly and easily!  Hey, I know there will be “puffs” moments along the way – that’s what makes these movies so great – am I right?

Love is what’s in the room with you at Christmas if you stop opening presents and listen.   – Author unknown, attributed to a 7-year-old named Bobby

My favorite Hallmark Christmas movie for 2014 is THE CHRISTMAS SHEPHERD.  And yes – there is a dog (well, duh!)  You know the drill – wear Christmas jammies and fuzzy socks.  Get comfy with your favorite snack – and let’s get this show on the road!  Yes – look it up on You Tube – to post here would violate copyright laws.

 Remember
This December,
That love weighs more than gold!
– Josephine Dodge Daskam Bacon

I hope you enjoyed the movie.  And yes – I used the Puffs…  I admit it!

“Let Every Day Be Christmas”
by Norman Wesley Brooks

Christmas is forever, not for just one day,
for loving, sharing, giving, are not to put away
like bells and lights and tinsel, in some box upon a shelf.
The good you do for others is good you do yourself.Peace on Earth, good will to men,
kind thoughts and words of cheer,
are things we should use often
and not just once a year.Remember too the Christ-child, grew up to be a man;
to hide him in a cradle, is not our dear Lord’s plan.
So keep the Christmas spirit, share it with others far and near,
from week to week and month to month, throughout the entire year!written December 17th 1976
by Norman Wesley Brooks

I wish you all a very Merry Christmas!  May this day be filled with love of family and renewal of spirit as we celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ!  ❤
