God not only understands donkeys & elephants, but Republicans & Democrats as well – there’s something to chew on! As I wrote this poem, I could not help but draw parallels in my mind about the parties represented by these two icons. Are Republicans the party that remember well the bad history and try with all their might to avoid repeating it? Are Democrats as a rule stubborn and unwilling to budge an inch? Well, anyway – it’s an interesting thought to ponder.
Why is the Republican party an elephant and the Democratic party a Donkey – of all things???
On this day in 1874, the Republican Party was first symbolized as an elephant in a cartoon drawn by Thomas Nast in Harper’s Weekly magazine. It began with the Central Park Menagerie Scare of 1874, a hoax perpetrated by the Herald. They published an untrue story about the animals in the zoo breaking loose and roaming all over New York’s Central Park.
The elephant’s trunk is always pointed upward – for good luck.
Some things about politics have not changed much throughout history – sadly. The ethics of the media were bad even back then! Today we still don’t know what stories are true and what ones are not. After reading the phony story, Nast drew a donkey clothed in lion’s skin, scaring away all the animals at the zoo. One of those animals, the elephant, was labeled “The Republican Vote.” That’s what led to the elephant becoming the symbol for the Republican Party.
It’s funny because according to Democrats, the donkey is smart and brave, while Republicans say the elephant is dignified and strong.
Those are excellent qualities to be sure – but today I would LOVE to hear a Party say that they are reliable, trustworthy and honest. I’m guessing I’m not the only one.
I’m tired of so-called transparency that is laced with lies. I ‘m tired of weakness and non-commitment to vital issues of the day. I’m tired of vacations and sport taking precedence over leadership. I’m tired… tired… tired.
We do all we can to make things better by voting. We still feel helpless because government is much larger than it needs to be. We have Czars overseeing the ones who should be in charge to begin with – the layers of government just seem to get thicker and the people feel powerless to change it.
Christians pray that God will help America. I pray that one day our government is more interested in the power of love than the love of power. We know that no matter who is in charge in America, God has the ultimate power over all. That is the fact that keeps us hopeful and smiling. 😀
