These little rodents run around the back yard and make chattering noises at your dog. They are squirrels and they are so fluffy and adorable, especially in the autumn and winter months. Their little cheeks get filled with nuts and they go scurrying back to their home to stock up for the cold weeks to come.
It’s SQUIRREL APPRECIATION DAY!!! I’ll do my best to appreciate them as long as they don’t run in front of my car.
Some folks eat squirrels and I guess it’s all a matter of how you are raised. We don’t catch them and make pets out of them, but we don’t go out and shoot them for food either. I know Miss Kay would think I was crazy for not eating them, but it’s just not how I was raised.
The squirrel that you kill in jest, dies in earnest. – Henry David Thoreau
I hit one with my car one day by accident. I felt so bad about it – poor little critter. I thought I’d miss him ‘cuz he sort of came halfway into the street but then turned around to get out of the road – but then at the last second he turned again and… well.
You know what song is runnin’ around in my mind, right??? Go on over to You Tube and watch the great Ray Stevens sing “The Mississippi Squirrel Revival”.
I contend that the revival only took place in Mississippi because the town’s name rhymes with Hallelujah. LOL!!! That just cracks me up. If you had asked me before that song came out if you could rhyme it, I would have said no you cannot. Guess I was wrong about that.
There are more than 200 species of squirrels. Around here we have those nimble little brownish ones. I’ve seen photos of gray squirrels and red squirrels. They can leap 10 times their body length. I can believe that because at our old house they used to jump from tree to tree and it really was pretty impressive to watch them.
I found this to be mildly disturbing – LOL
Are all Irish people afraid of squirrels??? Hmm… I may need to research that. Wink! 😉
