NATIONAL DUMP THE PUMP DAY

TL 6-20 DUMP THE PUMP DAY

In case you think this is a new idea…  here’s a retro commercial from the 1970’s.

You can’t understand a city without using its public transportation system.   – Erol Ozan

Today is the 8th annual NATIONAL DUMP THE PUMP DAY!!! No, my diabetic friends, I’m not talking about dumping your insulin pump! With gas prices getting ridiculously high, people are encouraged to use public transportation instead of driving today. Not only does this save wear and tear on your vehicle and the stress of having to drive yourself to work, but it saves you money. The latest APTA Transit Savings Report shows that a two-person household that downsizes to one car can save more than $9,700 a year!

In some areas of the country there will be special incentives offered for using public transportation such as free donuts, special prices on bus passes or in one state, gas receipts are being traded for free bus passes for the reminder of the month.

Here in Wichita we have bus service and of course, taxi cabs. Of course here in the heartland we don’t have subways or streetcars. I used to work with a guy who rode his horse to work. No, I’m not kidding! A few people ride their bikes to work to save on gasoline, but around here most people drive their cars to work or take the bus.  People do still carpool and that also saves money and wear and tear on your vehicle.

Americans are broad-minded people. They’ll accept the fact that a person can be an alcoholic, a dope fiend, a wife beater, and even a newspaperman, but if a man doesn’t drive, there is something wrong with him. – Art Buchwald, “How Un-American Can You Get?,” Have I Ever Lied to You?, 1966

If you live in an area that has good public transportation, do the math and see if it really would save you time, money or both to change your habit of driving to work. It’s not always easy to change a habit, but keep an open mind about changing this one. It might be a good thing to arrive at work in a better mood because you did not get road rage!

So today’s challenge is to find an alternative mode of transportation. Why not take one day to let someone else do the driving? Who knows – you may enjoy it so much you’ll want to do it regularly.   🙂
