There’s just something about a bowl of ice cream, isn’t there??? Rich, creamy, smooth and oh so yummy. The only thing that could be better than a bowl of vanilla ice cream is a bowl of chocolate ice cream!!! Today is NATIONAL CHOCOLATE ICE CREAM DAY!!! I am so ready for my bowl of happy!!!

The Unilever company, makers of Walls ice cream, sponsored research which indicated that ice cream really does make you happy in a literal sense! Don Darling of Unilever said,

This is the first time that we’ve been able to show that ice cream makes you happy. Just one spoonful lights up the happy zones of the brain in clinical trials.

Just as winning a large sum of money or listening to your favorite music can trigger the pleasure centre in the brain, so does eating ice cream! Talk about instant gratification – they said that the second the ice cream goes in your mouth, the “processing” area at the front of the brain, known as the orbitofrontal cortex – senses pleasure.

How were the scientists able to measure all of this? Well they used a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine to watch blood flowing to activated brain areas when people swallowed ice cream. And you thought the MRI machine was just for diagnosing bad stuff!

Without ice cream, there would be darkness and chaos.  – Don Kardong

This is good news to be sure, but we still have to override the urge to eat an entire carton of ice cream with some common sense. I know – I have to throw a wet blanket on things. Before you dive into the chocolate ice cream, make sure you read the label and have just one serving size. Be especially careful if you are diabetic like me! Remember those ugly carbs!  If you are careful with portions, you’ll be fine.  Have the right amount and don’t feel guilty.

Don’t wreck a sublime chocolate experience by feeling guilty.  – Lora Brody

So – have a cone or bowl of happy today! Enjoy your chocolate ice cream!

  2. I just had a small cone of red raspberry ice cream, and then did my physical therapy exercises. Chocolate is very good too, but the fruit flavored ice creams are my favorites.

Ice cream, ice cream, I scream for ice cream!!!
